Abandoned [PRE-RELEASE] iPad/iPhone Elite Assistant App

Hi all,

I'm in the final stages of testing an iOS app which works as a virtual assistant for Elite - EVA. I'm looking for a few brave CMDRs to help test it before it gets published. Obviously you'll need either an iPad or iPhone :D

Main Features
  • Sync log and notes with EDSM
  • Sync trade data with EDDN
  • Realtime updates from EDDN
  • Use EDProxy
  • Speech synthesis of significant events, including your own notes on systems
  • List current ranks, allegiances and scores
  • See Galnet articles
  • See full ship loadout and cargo
  • Take notes on systems (and sync with EDSM)
  • Request cross-reference distances and send to EDSM
  • Bookmark systems, stations within systems or commodities within a station
  • Bookmark entire trade routes
  • View system visit history (and sync with EDSM)
  • Commodity search by station, or within a radius of any station
  • Trade search for finding the best n-stop trade routes
  • Trade search for finding the best single-hop trade from any given station

In other words, all the usual stuff with hopefully a couple of extras, but this is all running on an iPhone/iPad (running at least iOS 8) instead of spread across several websites on a second monitor. If you're interested, please drop me a PM with your CMDR name and an email address. I should be ready to send out sometime next week. Final release will be soon after, depending on the results of the test. It's planned to be a paid app - but cheap, probably around £1.49/USD1.99 .

Please note that it takes me a while to get each person through all the paperwork that Apple requires, so please only PM me if you're definitely going to send me some feedback [sad]

Hi all,

Thanks for all the interest, that's enough people testing now *unless* you're a native non-English speaker, and would like to help translate to other languages.

Cheers,
Jim

I just got the app and had the same problem but it was my mistake. I used my CMDR's name as login where it must be my accountname at ED (e-mail). After that I received the authentification code by mail and it's working now.
Looks good :)

Hi J. Calvert (Joshua)

Thanks for your help in that done as you said and that worked for me....

cheers....:)

Hi guys,

Thanks for the heads-up. It should already be checking that the login name is a valid email address, so I'll check that again.

Separate subject; there's already been a few crash reports, notably a nasty one on iOS 8 on startup, which I've already found and fixed. I'll have an updated version in the App Store as soon as I can.

Cheers,
Jim

I've had an issue trying to log in on the app as well, but I correctly entered my account email address and password. (And just to ensure that wasn't the issue, I reset my password with Frontier, created a new one, and was still unable to log in through your app.) I got as far as entering a verification code once, but the app froze upon entry and I haven't been able to get to that point since.

Is this exclusively a PC-users' app? I play ED through the Xbox One and thus have a "linked account" through Frontier—could that be causing the issue? I'd hate to've paid $3 for an app I'm unable to use.

I'm on an iPhone SE running iOS 9.3.1. Any insight you might have would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Picent,

To be honest I don't know if there's a limitation for XBox accounts, but I wouldn't have thought so. Send me a PM with your email and I'll send over a debug build that may help to narrow down what's going on.

EVA does some database maintenance immediately on login which can make it unresponsive for a few seconds, depending on what else is going on at the time. It shouldn't last longer than a few seconds at most though.

Cheers,
Jim

I'm really interested in this and should of course RTFM (which I will do later on). In the meantime I'm curious as to how you get hold of information such as which systems a commander has previously visited. As far as I'm aware the only way to get this is from the verbose log files on the PC itself (e.g. this is how ED Toolbox gets hold of this stuff). Are you relying on PC users running something else in the background which gathers this information and then uploads it somewhere where your iPad app can access it or does the iPad app somehow talk to your PC directly (e.g. through an http RESTful API call?). Either way, how does this work for XBOX users?

This looks pretty awesome! But I'm guessing it only works with things associated with the PC version of the game? Would I get any benefit from it while playing the Xb1 version?

Edit: Also, will it be optimized for the iPad Pro?

Hi Alec,

EVA doesn't need anything else going in the background. It uses the same API as the official companion app, so gets the current location (and the current one only) directly from Frontier's servers. The visit history is built up over time. Having said that, it will download a visit history from EDSM if you've been using another tool in the past, and sending your visits to them. Also, if you choose to run EDProxy on your PC/Mac, the visits are a little bit more accurate when you're rapidly moving between systems because it can take Frontier's servers a little while to catch up, whereas EDProxy transmits the change immediately.

For XBox, you don't have the option to run EDProxy of course, but the standard companion app API still works as far as I know. If I learn otherwise I'll make it clear!

Regards,
Jim

Hi Sylon,

I don't know of a reason it wouldn't work with the XBox version, but if I find out otherwise I'll make it clear on the main thread. There's no extra features for the iPad Pro, but it will use the full screen area. i.e. it's designed to work explicitly with iPads, it's not just a magnified iPhone app.

Cheers,
Jim

Now I'm interested! Thanks for the reply!

When I logged into mine it took about five mins before it worked so I would try again and just leave it running for a time....
