looking for trouble

only so much time I can spend trying to work this out for myself so thought I'd just ask the question....

I'm trying to boost my fed rank so I can get a Sol permit.

To do this I am trying to locate some conflict/war zones, as this appears to be a way to both achieve this, to earn bounties and to increase combat rank also.

I'm having a right nightmare trying to find any zones though.

I've read the weekly combat report but 4 out of the 5 places I've spent time travelling to so far haven't got anything going on in them.

For example, Chowei system is listed as a warzone but there's zip going on there. Have I just missed it? Do these things not last for long?

The one system I did find some action was not one of those listed, but one neighbouring system that I chanced into. None of the stations there had any ammo though so I had to jump out to restock. When I got back, all the zones had vanished. Also, my rank didn't seem to increase despite earning 600k, I assume because none of the factions involved in the conflict owned the station in that system?

It's very frustrating. Spent 90% of my time recently just blundering around not really knowing where to go. What am I missing??!

They can be irritatingly hard to find when you want one, and they can end quickly. My only advice would be to fly around a bit more, you will find one eventually.
.
Or here's a list of systems with Compromised Nav Beacons. It's still not very easy to find one near to you, but one of these in Federal space would be a good way of collecting bounties.

I thought that handing out bounties/combat bonds/trading no more inreases your rep with the faction. Although, I can swear it would in the past.

Pretty sure combat doesn't increase your rank with the Major factions..?

Turning in bounties/bonds increases your Minor Faction standing with that station owner up to a certain amount per day I think and in turn your Major Faction standing but doesn't progress your rank.

To increase your Major Faction rank you need to do missons from the BB for an aligned Minor Faction.

When you reach 100% and get start to get your "Ascention Opportunity" or whatever appearing on the BB try and stock pile a few before handing in the first as there's a theory that they are worth more than the standard missions in the next level of progression.

It is possible, but extremely difficult, to gain fed/emp rank from CZ grinding.

Locating the CZ will be hard, you are looking for federation controlled systems with CZs in them. Use the system map to check that info.

OP if you want the permit in the next month you should look into another method of ranking up (check samosa's fast ranking thread)

You can get Rep with Feds from handing in combat bonds, but not ranks as far as I know. You gotta do some missions for fed faction for that, while there can be mission to take out x amount of Enemy ships in a CZ they don't really appear on the BB all that reliable.

The only good reasons to grind Fed rank - to get a FAS...& further, the Corvette!
As far as going to our solar system is concerned, to quote Marvin the Paranoid Android....'I've seen it..it's rubbish!'

I must be the only one that sees CZ wherever I go. To me there's a ridiculous amount of war going on. If you're really having trouble finding one, it's easy to start a war yourself.

I would say the best strategy is to go to a RES and shoot all the bad guys, cash in your bounties and then go to Tun and donate it to all the charity missions. You only increase your Federation rank by doing missions. Charity missions are the quickest (instant), but will cost an average of about 12,000. At a HI RES, you make at least 1.5 million an hour in a Cobra or VIper, so a 4 hour session would get you say 6 million, which would pay for 500 charity missions. I'm pretty sure that that would get you past the rank.

LHS 215 is good for that kind of thing. There's a couple of hazardous RES sites and a station (spring gateway) that spawns charity missions for a fed faction (spawns about 3 per hour without mode switching). You can happily make 2-3mil per hour bounty hunting and then do a couple of donation missions when you're back in the station handing in bounties. Much more entertaining than just grinding in Tun.

I'm pretty sure 2.1 (galaxy map bookmarking tools) are going to allow filter for civil wars and other states (Beta starts this week, ending May 8). Can't give you a reference, but have a look back through the last couple of newsletters or someone else might be able to give a link?

It's not all the bad, Ariel alone is worth the permit, plus you can do 2 million credit surface to starport haulage runs in a large freighter, no jumps involved. One of the best systems I've come across for planatery freighter runs.

Yeah it's already been confirmed.

Combat in CZs do in fact count towards ranking, but a very small amount. I remember the entire Emperor's Dawn CG granted me 2% towards Baron. All that time could be much better used doing missions.

cheers folks! Found a good system now... just near Altair. Bhartzereno or something :-D It's got some CZs only a 5ls away from a federation controlled coriolis station, so easy to repair and restock. Oh yeah looks like you are right about that kind of combat not raising rank on its own. You have to select missions to destroy ships in the BB and then that works... but other missions are better by the looks.
