There definitely are, you should look into the lore of elite by googling Thargoids. They're definitely the most well known. The question isn't do they exist, it's have they been put into game yet? Because so far no one has found them.

I think the first "alien" encounter will actually be a race of AI.
Plot twist: All the PowerPlay powers are really Thargoids in disguise.

But, yes Thargoids are a planned expansion at some point... or "Soon(tm) as a certain bearded one would say.
Here's a guess....
The engineers expansion may allow us to build a scanner which can detect the alleged alien presence in the Formidine Rift, which in turn will culminate in the confirmed discovery of the alien race by the end of season 2. Season 3 could be the invasion of the bubble by the alien race with season 4 the Thargoid & Human fightback.
