XBox 360 controller help

Hi all,

After having to leave my lovely HOTAS behind (travel reasons), I bought a 360 controller to see if that was a good replacement or, at least, better than mouse and keyboard.

It's nice and responsive but I'm finding it really awkward in combat. For instance, it's really difficult to fire and control the throttle at the same time, what with the shoulder buttons being throttle and the triggers underneath. I've tried binding the throttle to the left stick which works but when the stick recentres, the throttle automatically pulls back (obviously), which means constantly controlling throttle, (also tricky).

Has anyone got any good throttle/trigger combinations that they use or any advice on setting up the controller?

Many thanks.

Not sure if it will work but you could try to change input method for stick/throttle from analogue axis to digital.

In combat I generally use my trigger fingers for the shoulder buttons and middle fingers for fire. It feels strange....at first.

Playing with a Xbox controller myself it really is not optimal, from my expierience its just not possible to map the controller in a way that you can use throttle and thrusters in combat without the need to move the fingers. The Controller isn't really build for something like that I'm afraid.

Alltough things can get a lot better when you have too much money and buy a Elite Controller. Its a bit rubbish that you can't bind keyboard keys to the backpaddles but it still improves playing Elite quite a lot compared to the standard Controller thanks to the position of the paddles. I had a long "Yes I buy, no I don't buy" back and forth but in the End I'm glad I bought it.
But again, when you have too much money that is, he really is expansive.

Yeah, it's awkward, but you get used to it.

Off topic, but can you guys access the debug camera from the SRV using the Xbox 360 controller?

I can't :-( not even with keyboard commands!

I think this is what I'll have to do, just get used to the feel of using different trigger fingers. It does feel really strange though!

from when i used to use just a 360 controller i found the key wasnt using the bumpers to control the throttle but using them to fine tune it.

A hotkey setting like clicking in the left stick + Dpad/face buttons or whatever you find comfortable (with the different speed percentages) worked a treat.

Eg
L3+Y/UP - 75%
L3+X/LEFT - 50%
L£+A/DOWN - 0%

etc etc you get the idea. This way you can drop from full throttle to the blue zone or a stop/reverse throttle fast and then a bumper tap just to get it where you want.

Yup, been using an X-Box 360 controller since original Beta. Here's how I have mine mapped:

Left/Right bumpers - roll
Left stick - yaw/pitch
Push left stick - cycle hardpoints
Right stick - vertical/lateral thrusters
Push right stick - boost
Left/Right trigger - throttle
D-Pad - power allocation
Select - Deploy hardpoints
A - Primary fire
X - Secondary fire
Y - select target in front of me
B - toggle head-look (which is then mapped to right thumbstick)

I have a COUPLE keys mapped to the keyboard though, like FSD and SC, landing gear, etc.

Damn. Lol mine doesn't work at all.

On 2 separate PCs either. I doubt it's the pad, cos B+Right works in normal space, just not the SRV...

Even weirder is that if I try to bind any secondary commands to the Xbox 360 Controller, it will automatically add +B to it. Very odd. Lol

This sounds like a good idea, thanks.

There is something weird going on, I would recommend posting it in the Bug report forum and see if FD can do anything about it.

I did, months ago lol

Never got a response other than looking in to it. Someone else also had the same issue, and I was kinda hoping it was a global 360 controller issue. But it seems totally random.
I set both my PC and laptop controls up independently of each other(rather than copy the files, and are ever so slightly different, lol) yet I get the exact same issue on both. So weird.

What sort of profile are you using? And would it be possible for you to upload it somewhere so I can steal it. Lol

Maybe my version of ED just creates buggy config files....?

Thats too bad, but you can always try and PM support you may get an answer if you just try. Stuff can get lost when lots is going on, granted with Beta starting today it may be a bad time for that ^^

Well, my Profile is for a Xbox One Elite controller with the padels on the back, don't think it would work all that well on a standart controller. Also its weird anyway and reliese furthermore on the Chatpat for some stuff. But when it comes hard to hard you can manualy edit the config file, had to this in parts myself.
But there are changes to come with 2.1, I know a overhaul is to happen with the button config menu. Only a visual one as far as we know but maybe some bugs will be go away too.
