Elite: Dangerous rank changes

I disagree with that 100%, providing the game follows on in the spirit of the original there will be systems that are safe, you could sell your weapons and trade or mine for as long as you liked if that was your idea of fun and i see no reason not to expect the same in this one, can you really see places like the founders world or the empire and federations capital planets being in systems where pirates can operate?

So because there won't be pirates in 'safe' systems you should be able to become Elite by mining? Really? Like, really? That's ok with you and you want to play a game like that?

Anyway .. OT.

If thats what people want to do, and they have to spend a long time doing it to attain that rank (just like with any form of Elite status)....why not?

Isn't choice the thing that made Elite what it was so long ago?

EDIT: More OT, I dislike the new ranking names, much MUCH prefer the old ones, and they seemed better scaled too.

Do you think that gaining rank should only be about killing? If not, then why would you exclude any such activity in game from gaining you "points" towards rank?

Herewith the DDF on it (emphasis added):

Becoming Elite - Ratings
  • The “Elite” rating is a combat rating based on the number of successful pirate kills by a pilot. To get this rating requires a great deal of dedication. Additional routes to an “Elite” rating and that coveted membership were introduced in 3290.
  • Three new possible “Elite” rankings, in addition to the combat effectiveness rating (still based on number of kills using a player rating and ship formula) now cover new key areas:
    • Wealth: profit over accumulated net worth (though both values are taken into account)
    • Influence: based on contacts and successful negotiations or diplomacy.
    • Knowledge: acquisition of data, particularly through exploration.
  • Getting the Elite rating (in any of the four rankings) automatically gets you into the exclusive “Elite Federation of Pilots” – and being a member of the Elite federation confers many privileges. It is also possible for pilots without the “Elite” rating to gain admission to the EFP, but access to the organisation is extremely difficult: one must show extraordinary promise as a pilot to be admitted.
    • The pilot ratings are displayed openly if the pilot selects their rating to be public
    • If the player selects their rating to be private then it is only revealed via a scan
  • These values never decrease
  • Once admitted the pilot will be awarded a badge including the “Elite” logo, but with their current rank below. It is expected the majority of these will be “Elite: Dangerous” and “Elite: Deadly”. Those with an “Elite” rating get the original, unadorned badge.
  • The different ratings have their own badge colour
  • Once admitted to the EFP, elite missions/events become available to the event generator
  • Successful resolution of elite missions/events will increase a hidden elite value
  • In general, elite missions/events are not tied to any particular location or gameplay area, and are given context as having come through the EFP’s good offices (see the Pilot’s Federation document for more detail)
  • There will be missions available from the EFP to non-members, and will be presented as tests that will help gain admission. Elite missions/events are more likely to be generated for pilots with suitable reputations in specific areas (mercenary, bounty hunting, assassination, smuggling)
  • When the elite value is high enough a commander is invited to join the Elite Federation
  • Elite level missions will be unlocked once the commander has entered the Elite federation to give them new content to experience

Which is good, I think. Having a ranking based on the number of people you've murdered seems quite, how to put it, crude.

With what they've said about mineral distributions in the newsletter:
"LP 98-132 [...] It is unusual to find a non-mined-out mineral-rich system so close to Sol (only 40 or so light years away), but [...] the perpetual state of anarchy that has existed ever since has held down the numbers of ships mining here."
I suspect that any miner reaching Elite rank will be able to do such things with a mining laser that their reputation alone makes the wiser pirates give them a few AUs space.

Yeah, i think it will require MORE skill to become Elite through exploring, trading or mining than it will through killing.

After all, finding and exploiting a profitable trade route, reaching the furthest areas of human space and going beyond or searching out a lucrative mining area, keeping it secret and getting good prices for your ores probably require far more thought than blasting NPCs by the thousand (which, by the way I would find incredibly boring).

If FD has to mess with the traditional rank names, why not get rid of them altogether?
Who needs all those rankings? Either you're Elite, or you're not.

I always thought in the older games (I mostly played Elite, not Frontier) that rank was SOLELY based on combat?

And in the "Dark Wheel" backstory, that traders that didn't achieve the rank of "Dangerous" were basically traders who lacked the skills to survive trading...

If ranks are going to reflect activities other than combat perhaps they should be made a separate or additional designation. IE trading: Novice, Competent, Master, etc. You could do the same for mining and other activities.

IE: Elite Master Trader would be an Elite combat pilot who was a Master Trader, ie a trader who is good enough at combat to be a recognized veteran of doing so even in the most dangerous of places. A "Mostly Harmless Master Trader" would be someone who didn't engage in combat very much but stuck to trading in the safer systems. This would be very descriptive and would reflect the ACTUAL activity of the player!

I personally would have left in average and taken out deadly so that you have 4 ranks below competent and 4 above so that the rankings are more balanced.

Anyway what's in a name "a rose is still a rose even by any other name like rosacea". There are now 9 ranks so reach the fifth one and you are halfway there.

OK I have been thinking about some of this a little more.

1) I still prefer the original names in the interests of tradition for combat
2) I like gaining ranks for trading, mining and exploration but I would like 4 separate ones, with the names tweaked for when the originals don't make sense. You as a commander choose which of the tiers you choose to display on your main profile - of course a deep ship scan would reveal all info on all of your levels.
3) depending on which tree you were displaying would change the colour of your badge a little, and then go gold once all 4 were maxed (just for prestige people should not be forced to grind a job they dislike just to open content)
4) once you earn elite in any tier, you could then earn small pips onto it (a bit like gears of war 3 onyx badges) but this would be for prestige only..... I would not want to see content only for 2 pip elite commanders myself.

Just a few thoughts
