In a way i am glad they got rid of the average badges, getting promoted and told you are bellow average aint really a moral booster.

Same here. I think Newsletter even gives some insight why ranking has changed...regarding change from purely kill board to something more practical.
Odd that so many folks have issue with the word Average. For me its a positive word - it means you are at least as good as most people. Never really seen it as a negative word at all. Then again I was born before 1980 ..![]()
Finally, I understand that Master is above of the Expert. To make an analogy, a Jedi Master is not above a Jedi knight (who is an expert I think) ?

An expert is more of a specialist, very good at one thing. A master is one of the very best in a broader field. Like arts or science. Or the force maybe. I think a Jedi Master can train specialists like the Knight.
What is the relation between master/expert and dangerous?!!! Or deadly? They have different meanings. They do not belong together. That is my objection. Keep them but make them part of a non-combatant ranking list.Expert -> Master -> Elite sounds great
Personally, I like them. I know a place online, where you can upload an image & have a button badge made (£2 each, I already have the 3 factions done), I plan to have all 9 of the new rankings made as such. When I get to a new rank, I'll place it's badge on my personalised "Commander Robo" cap (which also holds my TrackIR clip), removing the old rank badge of course.
With the old rankings, Poor, Below Average, Average & Above Average, are not Federation of Pilots ranks that could be worn with pride, some even sound derogative.
Very nice, make 2 ranking lists to reflect those changes (combat, trading-mining) or even 3 lists, but don't stitch them together forcibly.
I always thought in the older games (I mostly played Elite, not Frontier) that rank was SOLELY based on combat?
And in the "Dark Wheel" backstory, that traders that didn't achieve the rank of "Dangerous" were basically traders who lacked the skills to survive trading...
If ranks are going to reflect activities other than combat perhaps they should be made a separate or additional designation. IE trading: Novice, Competent, Master, etc. You could do the same for mining and other activities.
IE: Elite Master Trader would be an Elite combat pilot who was a Master Trader, ie a trader who is good enough at combat to be a recognized veteran of doing so even in the most dangerous of places. A "Mostly Harmless Master Trader" would be someone who didn't engage in combat very much but stuck to trading in the safer systems. This would be very descriptive and would reflect the ACTUAL activity of the player!

It's not forcibly. It is to show that good piloting skills enable not only fast and precious killing, but also other feats. I think it is very good justification.
