Obsidian Ant's GPU just burned !

I know this is not the right place to talk about this so I apologise to the mods and admins.

But I know that here this topic will have the most impact.

Dear Obsidian seems to be in quite the predicament, for him to resort for a donation appeal it must be serious.[knocked out]

So I will just post his video here were he explains his situation way better than I ever could.

As much as I admire Obsidian Ant - all it takes is to pack up that melted GPU and send it back to the manufacturer with a little note saying "I has an ouchie!"

If they have any sense they will send you a nice shiny new one. Also send your PSU back. It may look normal and function normally - but after the current surge the melted GPU drew I wouldn't trust it.

I think that the card that burned is the one in the picture illustrating the video, and it says 980gtx.

Never heard of the brand though. :S

It looks like an EVGA card to me. They are supposedly quite reputable - but I have never owned one of their cards or gone through their RMA process. I wish Obsidian Ant the best of luck.

ED will run on integrated graphics. Not perfectly these days, and it will struggle with planet surfaces, but it's acceptable even on my MacBook air. Might be worth a try.

If I still had a spare 7950 I'd send it to him - but that went quite recently.

Brand doesn't matter. A 980 is a 980 us a 980. The only differences might be in custom pcb's and cooling, which Gigabyte does well. The ones they put on a custom pcb could be binned chips.

Reference cards are all the same though. Can't beat EVGA's customer service and warranty. They allow you do to a lot of things without voiding the warranty.

Off topic, but brand wars drive me nuts lol.

It's an evga brand gtx 780. Was a good card before combustion.

+Made my small contribution to get a fellow cmdr back up and running.

Bad timing - had one of my GTX 680s die last Monday and had to pick up a 980 2 months before I planned to upgrade to dual 1080s anyway, so I can really relate to the situation. Well - every little helps I guess.

He contributes a lot high quality content to the community, for free. That's a lot of time and effort. Regardless of the GPU I think there is nothing wrong donating a few buck to show ones appreciation. So come on people, stop that negativity. He's one of the good guys!
