galaxy map in vr

ive set my hotas up for galaxy map i can zoom in out left right up and down just fine but i just cant click on or target a system

Ensure you have pitch mapped so that you can rotate the plane of the galaxy.

So you have :

Backward/Forward (Translate Y)
Left/Right (Translate X)
Up/Down (Translate Z)
Pitch Up/Down (Rotate Plane)

Rotating the plane will reveal the circles/stems that you use to focus on when selecting a system.

It also appears that when you enter the map and it has reset to zero pitch (as it tends to), so that you view the plane edge-on; If you do any panning before pitching it up, it will somehow become offset, with no stems showing (probably out of bounds), and the reticle somewhere far off screen.

I don't know what happens, but I am guessing it is something to do with where the pivot point is, and maybe the effect of a null transformation component, because you can find your way back, by homing back in on the selection you started off with.

Plenty of odd things, still, with the galaxy map in VR: The "speech bubble menu" flying off in the opposite direction you look, instead of being pinned to the selected system, for starters, and UI panels facing over your shoulder... Wouldn't mind seeing a couple of sprite types being adjusted in-game either, for that matter; Seeing solar flares (...and other similar particles) rolling along with the camera, looks very odd. :p

I'd be perfectly happy with a 2D Galaxy map like you see on the monitor. Then I can use my mouse as normal. The 3D galaxy map on Vive is really tough to manage and I'm having the same issues as the OP in galaxy and system maps.

I struggled with it at first but after a while it becomes second nature once you have got yourself calibrated to the controls you have setup.

I still use the mouse to tilt and move the selection circle in the map. But once the selection circle is on a stem I zoom in a bit with my joystick and then the selection menu pops up. So, yeah, you do need a joystick to be able to use the map but you don't have to use it all the time.
I just wished they locked the mouse cursor to the 2d plane/selection circle, then only change back to a normal cursor when crossing over an info panel. They could make it an option in setting or something.

Also, they should limit mouse movement to the screen. I have often scrolled sideways with my mouse in the map only for something else on my desktop to get focus. And then I have to peer underneath my headset to alt-tab to Elite again. The Galaxy map can still be massively improved.

As long as you have buttons set up for up/down and rotations it works really well. No problems at all in VR.

Appreciate the thread. IMOHO a VR HOTAS Mapping guide needed.

Tangentaly on this topic. Just imagine where we could take the Galaxy & System map with Room scale VR though? (like get out of your chair and walk around the solar system)

In some ways, this is a case where the 2D Game Paradigm is holding back the VR potential.

You are just not doing it right. when you rise or lower the 2D plane you will see that there is a vertical line descending or rising from the systems. If your system doesn't have it is because the plane is far from the system, reduce the gap until the system will project itself on the Plane, now move the cursor on the projection, select and you will be linked to the System. Once there navigate the same why as you do on the menu. Always is your bindings are done right.

PS:Movement in Planet System is slow with digital command

How's your vive jankster? Any good in Elite?

The Galaxy map is a pain.

Found a quick solution, when pre-selecting to place a route, in the mission accept screen, go to galaxy map, look directly at the top left hand side where your route screen will show up, as soon as it opens, look across horizontally 'slowly' until the system comes up, then immediately press place route icon.

Galaxy map is slow and clunky in VR to say the least...

I'd like to have the option to pick up my Vive controllers.. have it project a laser pointer so I can select systems/planets/stations, etc. The problem I'm seeing is the mouse is being used as a crutch to select systems within a 3D UI. The mouse is far better suited for 2D. Things just don't quite line up all that easily for the mouse to do what it needs to do.

I just end up searching by system name in the galaxy map. typing the name in (thank goodness I don't need to see the keyboard to type)... then when it is selected I can use the mouse to set fastest route and plot the course. Once in the system map from there it gets clunky once more if I want to select a planet, station, or surface port. It takes a bit of patience to get there. What I can do in a matter of seconds on a 2D monitor with a mouse can take a few minutes in VR.

Add on top a lack of bookmarks or a 'select last system' option when doing trade routes... its like having to completely replot course along each leg of the journey. The darn GPS I use between home and work on a daily basis is smart enough to auto-plot my route, or have bookmarks smart enough to know my more favorite shortlist of locations. In the year 3300... apparently no such things exists ;P

hi Rich the vives great... but in elite its not very good which is a shame because its the game i got it for..but it looks like they are working on the issues so just need to wait

Sadly both system and galaxy maps are an enormous pain for me to use :( I'm sniping the patch notes every time for a fix but no juice so far :/

Very strange, are the people having problems using a HOTAS? With it setup on my Warthog it is really easy to use, unless I need to type. I never need to use the mouse and love the way I can rotate with the stick, zoom in and out ect. Very intuitive for me.

In the system map, you have a circle, broken into thirds, that you can move over an object to select, etc. Why not do the same thing in VR for the galaxy map? I can zoom in and out, go left / right, rotate and pitch, but the selection of the item I need is the killer for me. I've tried the suggestions, but it's more art than science at this point and certainly not intuitive.

There have been countless therads in this very forum already about how to use the galaxy map in VR.

Best explanation is probably the video in this post from about 1 year ago:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=59809&p=2394144&viewfull=1#post2394144

Most important rule: DON'T USE THE MOUSE! AT ALL!! Move the mouse cursor completely off the screen so it doesn't interfere with anything. Use your HOTAS or controller to move the circular marker instead like shown in the video.
With the most popular HOTASes you'll be fine with default bindings even, on the X52 it works like a charm.

Once you've figured out how it works the galaxy map is really easy to use. IMHO it's a brilliant implementation of a 3D map in VR. Besides its practical use being immersed in a sea of stars is really something special.
I wish people would do at least some research in this forum instead of complaining right away.

Major step to navigating the galaxy map.. do not use a mouse.

Bind things to your Controller or HOTAS.. the mouse is a completely different plane then the selection cursor.. and the controller/HOTAS gets its own selection cursor once the mouse is not the focus
