galaxy map in vr

There have been countless therads in this very forum already about how to use the galaxy map in VR.

Best explanation is probably the video in this post from about 1 year ago:

Most important rule: DON'T USE THE MOUSE! AT ALL!! Move the mouse cursor completely off the screen so it doesn't interfere with anything. Use your HOTAS or controller to move the circular marker instead like shown in the video.
With the most popular HOTASes you'll be fine with default bindings even, on the X52 it works like a charm.

Once you've figured out how it works the galaxy map is really easy to use. IMHO it's a brilliant implementation of a 3D map in VR. Besides its practical use being immersed in a sea of stars is really something special.
I wish people would do at least some research in this forum instead of complaining right away.

I've done my research, gave it time in VR and I still have to say... Give me a 2D option. Trading is borderline frustrating in VR simply because of the galaxy map. With the 2D map i can plot my return route in the time it takes the ship to turn around after pressing launch. With the 3D map it takes much much longer. Extremely frustrating.

System map I can live with short term in VR but the galaxy map for me isn't usable. I've followed all the tips in this thread and gotten no where. If I get a successful star selected by mouse, it's by fluke and not design.

I did have an idea about that though. On the back of the mouse have a light rod coming out perpendicular to the flat face of the mouse going back deeper into center of the screen to use as a guide. 2D users will not see this at all because it's behind the mouse icon. VR users can place that light rod onto the star or item they want, then zoom in until the mouse picks up on the object. If the rod moves off as you zoom, you can readjust the mouse position and go again. The light rod gives you the third dimension needed to run the 2D mouse.

Crude example here.

Do you see those solid red circles on your picture? They're on the plane of the map, and there's a line perpendicular to it that goes up or down to a star. If you move the round blue circle to the dot, you select the star.

Like everything else, it takes a little practice, but once you get used to it, you can zip around the map quite easily. I've found it easier in VR than ever, since the map is now 3D, and the whole thing is spread out around me.

It's great that people explain here how you can successfully select systems using a joystick, it has quite literally made the impossible possible again.

But I still prefer the mouse for navigating the galaxy map and then not being able to select a system with the mouse is a severe bug that frustrates many people, as evidenced by this and other threads. And it really shouldn't be that hard to fix, just lock the mouse cursor to the 2d galaxy grid so you directly move the blue circle and it's done. Doom 3 did something similar with it's in-game interactive panels and that was back in 2004, over 10 years ago!
Please fix this, Frontier devs!
