Gtx 1080 $599

Actually, to nit pick :) Nvidia claim that the GTX1080 has twice the speed of a Titan X for VR specific loads:

http://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/a-quantum-leap-in-gaming:-nvidia-introduces-geforce-gtx-1080

"...NVIDIA today announced the NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1080 -- the first gaming GPU based on the company's new Pascal™ architecture -- providing up to 2x more performance in virtual reality compared to the GeForce GTX TITAN X..."

IF THE GAME IS CODED TO USE THE NEW API FOR SINGLE PASS VR STEREO - Which of course no games are and I don't expect FD to put in specific NVidia code any time soon.

Marketing Hype and best case scenarios

Surely 2 times more performance is to be understood as twice (double)?

Anyhoo... No matter. Will be interesting to see the difference between Nvidias claims and real life testing. :)

Edit. Ah yes "Up to"... I see what you did there. ;)

The use of "2x more" seems a bit dubious too, like that's surely 300% of current.

PR, like your job is to spend your time coming up with imprecise statements, that people misunderstand. =/

Come again? Are you being condescending because I quote Nvidia?

Like, your job is to spend your time being condescending? =/

If I start with 100 and say my product is 2x that, then I get 200. 200 is not 300% of 100.

EDIT: actually rereading the original statement I retract. up to 2x more yes would be 3x the original. :)

Eh? not sure what you mean? "condescending because I quote Nvidia"

Why do you think I'm being condescending?

My job isn't to spend my time being condescending, no.

edit: @SplitTheDog yeah 200% not 300 =p

The keyword being "more" 100% more is 1x more, 200% more is 2x more. But when they say 2x more, really they mean 100% more. Just saying their PR speak is using more in a suitably vague manner so that it can be read as a 200% increase when really they mean a 100% increase (I presume).

So when "you" write "you", "you" do do it in a general term? Tricky. ;)

Edit: If your not a native speaker, I could see how this could puzzle you. Another thread though :)

Doh sorry, yeah that sentence is just painting some PR person and trying to put the reader in their position.

The general you.

I don't. :) And I will no longer consider it an insult. ;)

Based on the charts nvidia release I believ the do mean 200& more as the bars are more than double the 980 for VR. Of course it helps they aren't comparing against the Ti versions.

Hurr Hurr. You said 'do do'. :D

Does "launch 27 May" mean that Scan, ebuyer etc. Will have them available from 27 May for anybody to buy at the sterling equivalent of $599?

Not sure when they will be available in the UK.

I am sure they wont be GBP equivilent of $599 though, they will likely be £599. (Yes 20% VAT accounts for a bit of it but yes UK always gets fleeced)

I think come 27th it's the Nvidia 1080 reference cards that come out, tHe "Founder's edition" which I believe is +$100, I've heard folk say it's a high-binned card but not 100% sure that's the case.

I think also at the same time it's Nvidia's own 1080 reference cards though again not 100% sure, it might just be Founder's at that point.

Who's selling them I have no idea but it seems Overclockers UK had a preorder page up for a bit.

After that it's the manufacturers own cards, how long after no-one knows at this point but realistically folk seem to think 2-4 weeks as it's not in Nvidia's interests to make it exclusive and screw over their partners.

1070 I don't know, 1080Ti no idea, I'd love to know though.

Marketing Hype and best case scenarios

: Quoted again for those that cannot read.

FACT : The game needs special code to make the 2x performance gain quoted by nVidia. (Single Pass Stereo)
FACT : No current games will get 2x as they don't have the code and won't for ages, if ever as specific to code nVidia and do you thing for example FD will spend dev time for nVidia VR users only ?
FACT : The nVidia presentation was a sales pitch with bespoke apps to give best case against worse case hence the magical 2x.

Baby bejesus : I should stay off the internet forums with all this going around. See sense people, no wonder so many people get scammed nowadays.

Also

FACT : The Founders = Reference : All they have done is changed the name and priced it mid point not to upset their partners. So it is not special or binned and the MSRP figure is how much the MINIMUM the partners should sell their variants at if they wish.

This is correct it's just the reference model - for $100 extra Nvidia will sell you a card with the reference cooler and the GPU will be at reference clocks. If there's one thing Nvidia are good at it's clever marketing.

Yup, all good points. I'd love to see Frontier code in that support, but then again, I'd love to just get basic aliasing fixes for the Vive first...
