The Star Citizen Thread v 4

Remember folks,

Star Citizen is an Early Access game.

Yup, but was mentioning Steam there, and indie games on the case, (off-topic btw) of this small indie teams that get on early access at very early stages of development, but with ambitious games that they don't have neither the team, neither the money to be able to pull it off, it usually doesn't end well. Far i see i'd say that's the biggest reason of why indie games die during the early access stages. There are more of rare cases where they manage to get a good support, build a studio, get on hiring, and then yeah things go well for them.

TBH, I don't mind it so much when the developer has a pretty clear plan to delivery and some kind of release year in mind. I think there have been some good examples but not so much in the space game market.

Space games are the gaming industry's money pit. Most avoid them, some get into it and end up throwing money after money making no progress, and a precious few are able to turn them around into something amazing.

It is so easy to make a level with spacey backgrounds...translating that into a full fledged space game with expansive game worlds, satisfying physics, and convincing visuals is a hugely daunting task that can chew up indie devs and cause a real sore for AAA.

As for early access, I love the concept but I hate being involved. The unfinished game loops, buggy graphics and constantly changing balance has just worn me out...Elite Dangerous is about all I can put up with anymore and it is only because it is a space game that I do put up with it. From now on, when I decide to back or purchase an early access game, I'll happily watch its development from the sideline.

I wish everyone could be like these guys though... https://trello.com/b/KbugnSRJ/subnautica-roadmap ...As someone who writes software requirements and leads agile teams, this makes me happy

Have to agree also Monk. The experience with ED and SC has completely burned me off ever again supporting a niche genre like the space genre through early access. The former has been disappointing and the latter is a travesty to my mind.

copy copy copy copy copycat where are you? :D

To be somewhat fair...

What else would we expect to do first on a planet surface?

I think this could have been an opportunity for CIG to take a page from their own book of "rule of cool" and done something really neat like a land speeder. Bumps and rocks...pshaw, hop on your hovering land speeder and dominate the landscape...concept on sale for $100.

If it is to ride around on a planet surface with a greycat, it seriously needs something... bigger. Greycat hover upgrade?!

From a casual observers point of view: considering it's touted as the 'most open game development ever' there seems to be less specific information about what to expect content wise in the remainder of this year than there is for Elite Dangerous.

Does this hold true? What schedule exists for 2016 beyond persistent PU and shopping?

Well there was Star Marine which is cancelled, delayed indefinitely, already ingame.
Chapter 1 of Squadron 42 was last due out end of 2015. I don't think there's been a revised date and no-ones seen any gameplay - not even journo's invited into CIG - so who knows when that's coming.
As for everything else - eg cargo hauling, trading, exploration, passenger transport, fuel scooping, refueling, pirating, mining, salvaging, repairing... [where is it]

Oh, but there is. Look closely.

Over a year has passed since the announcement that SQ42 is NOT going to be released in chapters. It is going to be released fully at once.

Exploration is already in the game, as well as pirating, and repairing.

Heh

That being said...I wonder what the next SRV will be and when.

I know it will probably be something much more... down to earth, let´s say. But dreaming is free, this is my choice:

It stills annoy me slightly that we seeing teams go straight to trying to do a fully fledged PC game instead of getting their      together first and producing a one or two games on Android and iOS first. This is what hello world have done. It seems far to many people are going from I have a dream to build the next GTA to early access rather I have a dream to build the next Final Fantasy type game but let build a simple puzzle game for the iphone first, then may be you build up from there aim to build a new FF type game.

An yes I know the temptation to want to go from barely being able to cruel to trying to beat Usain Bolt in the 100 meters who need to learn to walk first [big grin]

Indeed. It's both encouraging and sad at the same time. I am sure a lot of it is motivated by the possibility of free cash for no effort.

I've been wanting to develop Advanced Tapeworm Simulator for absolute years now - maybe I should Kickstarter it :D

Oh - and I can't code to save my life. I know - I'll just put that down as a $250,000 stretch goal!

Seriously though - there's been a lot of scamming with such things. Didn't one guy pretend all his funding went into security bonds to secure future development, but instead spent it all on a house?

Not directly any scam, specially on Steam Early Access, developers can have all the shiny trailers (doesn't need to represent the game even) and promises of what the game will be, but to all that matters, you're buying the game as it IS, after the money is in, they never update the game again... And Valve is okay with it, if they aren't, well, they don't do anything about it. Because of those ridiculous abuses, there's a step back from people to keep trusting Indie developers.

Really? That's kind of underhanded. Remind you of anything?

Yeah, reminds of the game currently being developed. ;)

When the moment comes to get the massive Javelin in-game, but first the Idris! The idea and direction of gameplay from that original trailer is the same of today, on that aspect, the direction stands. I've seen trailers of SC that went a bit over the top but that ain't one of them!
