Why Erimus and I support SEPP for the Dangerous Games (and why DWE and explorers should, even if they hate PP)

I love the sound of this. What exactly is needed from us? I know exactly nothing re: PP.

I'm due back to the bubble June 1st +/-, I have a number of different ships to choose from (including combat ready vessels), and a significant bank account. Plus I'm going to be bringing back something like 7000 system scans including a ton of first discoveries. Is any of this stuff useful to the effort?

SEPP will be pushing for a passive exploration bonus. This means that you won't have to pledge to SEPP or power play at all to benefit. Just like the other passive benefits (ALD 20% bounty bonus, LYR 15% ship/module discount, Archon 10% smuggling bonus). They will apply to everyone who docks :)

So after we win the dangerous games, you can stay in the black as long as you'd like and SEPP will be ready with extra CRs to reward your efforts.

This is how Li Yong always should have been, that rank bonus he has is just ridiculous and completely useless to 95% of all explorers.

I'm still out 35,000 lys from the bubble but running back as fast as I can. If I'm home in time to help out SEPP then you can bet I'll be doing everything I can to help them win. I want to let the devs hear our voice and hopefully take notice for once!

I'm still way out on the other side of the galaxy and will likely not be back before the games (work is being a pill), but I bought a second account and will be using it to help SEPP.

The important thing first: I'll support SEPP with my entire available game time during the Dangerous Games. I think an exploration power is a great idea, and SEPP has shown their dedication to the cause in an impressive effort over the time I've been playing. (Also, I'd easily follow Ziljan, Erimus and Dr. Kaii into the jaws of hell where matters of exploration are concerned.)

But.

I'm a little worried. (Maybe I shouldn't have read "The Hunger Games" at the same time the Dangerous Games were announced.) To me, the whole concept smells like a way to artificially generate friction and conflict among players and player groups, a way to reinforce an "us versus them" mindset: Let's show the pew-pew crowd what explorers can achieve. Let Frontier see how dedicated we are.

Frontier created one of my, if not the favorite video game ever, I have nothing but respect (and money) for them, but they are game masters, and right now they are pretty good at it. People I'd never thought of getting involved with the Power Play system, me included, are suddenly taking part in it, for good reasons: Benefits to our play styles, supporting our friends, rallying to our cause. Drawn into conflicts that normally don't matter to them. Part of me feels like I have been well played, the carrot is too tasty to ignore, the piper's melody is too lovely.

Don't support it then, some might say, but that's not what this is about. I want SEPP to become an exploration power. What I'm worried about is how it becomes one. How much we will be drawn into the "us versus them" mindset. Other player groups are also people who dedicate time and effort to the game and their causes, and we are forced into conflict with them. Let's not see them as enemies to crush. They are players like us, striving for recognition like we do, and they are forced to play the Games just like we are, it's the only way to become a power.

Let's be the good guys here. Let's see this as a challenge we set upon ourselves, not a challenge by others. We didn't need opponents to get to Beagle Point, we needed base camp spirit.

ps to Kancro Vantas and the SEPP leadership: I really wouldn't want to be in your shoes right now. You are counting on the support of the most dedicated, but also the craziest and most individualistic players I've ever had the pleasure to know in nearly 20 years of online gaming. I hope you know what you got yourselves into. :)

I'm a seasoned loner explorer at heart as some may know. 3 trips past Beagle and back so far. Exploration needs all the help it can get, so I will happily do what I can for this cause. :)

Kuroshio, let me set your kind to rest. SEPP is not and never will be a partisan organization. We exist solely to benefit anyone who has ever been or ever will be interested in exploration regardless of current affiliation. There is no them, only an all encompassing US.

As far as navigating the Power Play mine field, we are not interested in galactic domination. Merely surviving would be enough, and this is quite easy to do in the current mechanics. We already have the home team numbers to keep our systems fortified peacefully. All we need now are able bodied explorers to help out in the 4 week dangerous games.

Then anyone who docks within the SEPP data sphere will get extra Exploration Rewards regardless of whether they are pledged to SEPP.

[sigh]

I wanted to go to Sgr A*.

6 klies out, almost at the Statue Of Liberty nebula, and the rats set up the Jaques CG, so I return (ok, that one also was influenced by a desire to get rid of that Python and try a FAS - after which I discovered that the FAS has 2 coffee machines in the cockpit :p).

After completing that CG I bought that FAS, decided to hang around for a week or so to see whether 2.1 drops so I can replace the two large lasers with large multicannons and maybe find an Engineer to look at the FSD range, and was ready to leave again for Sgr A* and maybe further onwards to see how Jaques is doing.

Now you come up with the Dangerous Games and a request to suport SEPP.

I'll never get to Sgr A* or BP at that rate.

Count me in. I just hope there's something a FAS can contribute, I'd hate to have to switch back to one of those slow boats again.

Ziljan, I'm not worried about SEPP's ideals, or I wouldn't get behind it. :) But the very nature of the Dangerous Games is 'us versus them': How successful is our CG compared to theirs? Who will win, the other guys or us? Does FD play favorites with them but not us? And so on.

It's very easy to get drawn into that kind of narrative, and it's forced upon us by the rules of the Games. I'm simply recommending caution - or rather, trying to raise awareness for one of the fundamental problems of campaigning: It is a lot easier and more instantly satisfying to hinder the efforts of others, to blame or criticize or fight them. It's easier to find volunteers to blockade a CG than to motivate people to do a hundred cargo runs, even if the latter is way more important.

SEPP doesn't want to be a partisan organization, but while participating in the Games, it will be one. There are opponents who want to win as much as we do. Frontier throws us into the world of political campaigning, leadership skill challenges and competitive group bias.

And that's not bad or evil in itself, but I believe we should be aware of it: Being able to ask 'is this helpful to our cause in the long run or just satisfying at the moment' is a major challenge in campaigning (and elsewhere). Emotions will run high during the Games. Posts will be written in anger, discord chats will be full of stressed people who invested time and effort in a cause that might be lost. That will be the time when it will be easy to blame others, to issue commands instead of leading by example, to scold instead of motivate.

Let's be careful. I know from professional experience how easy it is to get lost during political campaigns, and how hard it is to manage them. I think we have to admit that it is one, with all the conflict it will bring.

Can I support the cause by submitting my DW exploration data at a certain place at a certain time? I'm still on my roundabout way back and have five months of data to supply.

Please let explorers who don't read the forums know. Please commit to changing your routine for just a few weeks in June this year and help SEPP win the CG games that the competition is composed of - and do your best - to make a massive different for us all. Don't let this opportunity go to waste. It may never happen again.
June eh? I thought it was July. Good, good. I can do June, July would have been a stretch. I'll look out for a sploration CG.

Don't give a flying frisbee about PP, but I do about the people organizing SEPP.

Do the CG on the edge of the bubble please :D

Dr Kaii : I support you, but tell me this as I have glanced at the literature for DG, so I might be wrong :
Do you want my Exploration data ? or is this CG race something else ?
The reason I ask is because I will be at Beagle Point by the end of may, so if you need my help in the bubble I will have to self destruct once I am at the end of my DW trip (which I don't mind). I am the type that can't run back to the bubble from 65000 Ly away in less than weeks :)

I'm kind of curious to know if the accumulated exploration data I have will be needed by yourselves or if I should sell at Jaques when he turns up. I can buckyball back once I've docked with him at BP though so in theory I can be back in time, I just need to know what, where and when.

I'll second the question (or fourth or fifth it) re exploration data. I'm happy to deliver 5 months of my labors to the cause, if it is deemed helpful.

I don't think anyone can answer that until we know what the CG's will be about - if one or more of them will be exploration related, which would be fitting, then yes your data will help.

Good to know. I won't be in a position to hand it in for another 14-18 days anyhow. Thanks for the feedback.
