DK2 adjustments

I have just dug out my DK2 from storage. I think I was a bit disappointed when I first got it and gave up on it at that time. Partly because the graphics card couldn't handle things. I have it installed again with a new GTX 970 graphics card to help things along a bit. I have installed the latest DK2 software 1.3 and it seems to run quite well. I am sure the previous software allowed me to adjust various settings, one of the main being inter pupillary distance. I cant seem to find these settings on this latest software. Have they done away with it. My IP distance is quite wide so it's hard getting both eyes in focus at once.

Unfortunately the latest oculus software won't let you change it as they have a slider on the CV1 itself that can change the IPD.

Oh dear, thats a pity. I'll stop searching for it. Not sure, I think I saw someone selling 3d printed adapters for the purpose of setting lens widths.

Yes that was for people with IPDs outside of the available range, sort of like the A and B lenses on the DK2. I have an IPD of 68 according to my optician which is on the high side and I have no problems with the DK2 right now.

Oculus won't support the DK2 forever, so it is a case of enjoy whilst you can. Once they patch out support in a future Store runtime update, people will have to get a CV1 (once they can get the production numbers high enough for general availability of course!).

So, with runtime 1.3 the IPD adjustment went, and of course no longer can we switch out of Direct Mode. I guess the DK2 still has a place for older titles and runtimes, but only a limited future for current titles.

I really liked the DK2 lenses over the CV1 and Vive, but I sold it on eBay because the future simply isn't with the DK2. I was glad my IPD was pretty standard, but yeah it highlighted to me that time would be running out on it, so flogged it whilst I still could get a good price for it...

Wish mine was 68mm. Mine is 75mm which is out of range of the little plastic adaptors you can get but will still be an improvement. I have ordered some from Shapeways. I had to be careful buying binoculars as I had to be sure they would go wide enough.

Yes it will be a problem. I suspect some third party may take over and keep things active on the DK2 when it's officially dumped. I doubt I will go for the CV1 though, I will probably sit on it a little and wait till things are a bit more stable.

Just a quick update. The Shapeways IPD adapters arrived today and are nicely made and brought the lenses to nearer my wide IPD. But the bad news is they bring the lenses about 3mm further forward and that makes the image out of focus. I am using the B lenses as it is due to my -2.5 dioptre correction I need. Can't win. I think this DK2 will be going on eBay fairly soon.

I am still using my DK2 with the modded firmware IPD adjustments plus the physical separation(Shapeways) Lensholders with the current 1.3 SDK. All fine.
I think you will need the Runtime switcher for uploading the modified firmware onto the DK2. Imho you need both modifications together (Lens separation + Software/Firmware IPD adjustment to move the images further out/in accordingly)

Both together are really great improvement with my 69 mm IPD. Much better Sweet spot sharpness.

Link for DK2 Firmware adjustment (its moving the 2 images more apart with higher IPD):

There is an adjustment in the Oculus config file that makes the adjustment of moving the two images apart in 1.3 SDK without resorting to modified firmware.

DK2 IPD Workaround:

Exit Oculus Home
Stop OVRService
Edit the file C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Oculus\NetServer.cfg
On the line that says "DK2LensSeparationOverride": 0,
Change 0 to your IPD (in meters: example for 63.8mm change to 0.0638)
Save the file
Start OVRService

PS: Remember to change it back to 0 when you receive your Rift CV1!

However the problem I am having now is not the image separation but the focus. B lens in without the Shapeways IPD widener image clear as a bell each eye, just two close together. With Wideners in place and B lens fitted both sides no where near as clear without due to the lenses a few mm further away from the lens. IPD distance near perfect.
