The Vive discussion Thread

Only got the vive today but I just cant get it to work in ED. When I go to options and 3D it doesnt give the the Headset option in the drop down. I have steamvr running. Does the game need to be run via Steam as I only have the standard installer version.

Cheers

It should not need to be run via Steam. I have the FD version only too, but I enabled VR in the 3D settings before they fixed the VR launch options.

Is SteamVR running and the headset and at least one lighthouse are green? You should then be able to launch it from the FD launcher, set 'HMD Headphones" as the 3D type in desktop mode, quit, then launch it again and it will come up in the Vive's display.

Got my Vive last week, its running Elite for me. Does it work OK with other VR titles for you? First make sure SteamVr is running and everything is green. You can then start the game launcher and run the game (steam not required) i.e. Horizons 64bit. Once the game starts up go under graphical options and set it to enable the HMD. I don't even think you need to restart the game. If the HMD isn't being seen as an option. Make sure the game is in Windowed mode, not full screen. I don't believe setting the game resolution in the options matters...it should just run in VR at the correct res.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah SteamVR was running and the Lighthouses were both running and all other games were running fine via the Vive.
In the end as a test after trying everything to get the Vive to show up under the 3D option in Graphics I added ED to Steam launcher as a non Valve game and it worked first go. No idea why but at least it worked :)

Is anyone running Horizons on the Vive with a GTX 970?

Aside from the render bug everything looks great and I have no issues with FPS. I was wondering if I could pull of horizons with my card?

Thanks!

Yes I have a GTX970 (Well two actually but obviously only using one as SLI doesn't work). I am have very few issues apart from the anti aliasing/resolution problems. I have had to turn some of the settings down though.

Works great for me with a GTX 970 (Asus Stryx OC). I run with VR High and supersampling at 1.0x. If I switch to 1.5x the game got somewhat jittery and wasn't comfortable. At the time I was docked in a station which likely put a greater strain on things. I stayed with 1.0x. I have my 970 and CPU slighly overclocked and the SteamVR performance test rates the system around 8.3-8.5, if that means anything. Horizons performs great too. I've flow around planets and landed on surface ports. The one thing I have not done much of is spend time in the SRV in VR.

I got my first taste of VR nausea when driving around like a maniac in the SRV. It was fine until I started skidding all over the place, then I had to stop the SRV and allow my body/eyes to reset by looking down at my "body" and looking at the horizon. Absolutely no issues flying, but the SRV was a little dicey!

The VR nausea induced by SRV driving in VR is the reason I'd like a ground-effect skimmer to fly around the planetary surfaces in.

Just noticed a strange thing. Sometimes when I remove / replace the headset I can select next up/down menu just by looking up and down.

Random note from today: Elite performs pretty well in VR on Ultra settings in the 2.1 Beta for me on the Vive. It's very rare to see frame skipping of any kind, especially in open space (say, at a conflict zone or just flying around). Compare to 2.0 which I can't even imagine looking anything but choppy with these settings, especially with every setting including terrain maxed.

I even went so far as to do some trench runs on a local moon to see how it would perform. Maybe a small hitch every 15 seconds. Not sure if 2.1 is just generally better optimized or what, but yea.

Anyone else in the Beta with a rig similar to mine, give it a try. I think the performance might surprise you. It still needs to be properly fixed by FDev 100%, but the Beta is far more playable for me than 2.0. If 2.1 launches as optimized as the current Beta build is, I'll be a pretty happy camper until they get in the official aliasing fixes. But understanding that having a rig like mine is the exception rather than the standard, I'll be here regularly pestering for the improvements we need so that I can go back to recommending friends by ED.

edit: I take that back. Currently performing just as well on 2.0. Maybe a SteamVR update helped smooth out reprojection performance? idk.

More random notes.
After one month headband nicely bedding in, I decided to try the small face as the nose piece just touching my nose was a minor irritant, I thought at first the small face was aimed at much younger users but fits me much snugger.

Does it drop to 45fps?

Another data point to back up Heavenly Hammer: 2.1beta4 is perfectly playable in space on the Ultra preset with a moderately overclocked GTX 970. Some reprojection stutter when looking through the entire depth of the new station atmosphere haze, otherwise it's fine. I haven't tried a planetary landing yet.

It looks beautiful.

OK, may be a stupid question but... How do I launch ED (from ED Launcher) in "VR Mode"?
I've got a shiny new Vive sitting here, and can't get it working with ED.
