Planetary Exploration

I've read about space exploration, but very little on exploring Planets.

I'll admit my exploration rank is not ELITE & its neither AIMLESS and I've been landing my SRV on Planets to get me in training for an Exploration Trip.

a couple of questions I have in this regard:

- How many MATERIALS are there to Discover in the Galaxy ? (I keep getting a NEW MATERIAL Found Message)
- Are there any Rare MATERIALS ?
- Anyone else taking an SRV for Exploration ?

Please post any Frontier Forum links to assist in this, thanks.

FDDEVs you are doing a great Job & I'm sure one day we can land on Planets with Atmospheres.

1. I think 25. Or was it 26? You can probably check on the wiki.
2. Yes, materials come in 4 tiers: very common, common, rare and very rare.
3. Sure, most explorers do. Probably everyone who owns Horizons; materials can be used to boost your jump range as well as refill your AFMU, so they're useful for explorers.

I take 2 SRVs with me for exploration, it is fun to set down and drive around the various worlds and pick up metals. It is a good change of pace from jumping/scanning and detail scanning.

Also, the materials should come in handy for the upcoming 2.1 patch, so I have a full hold of materials already for crafting purposes.

I'm lucky enough to be an ExploraConda CMDR so I have the luxury of the ability to take up to 4 SRVs.
I however explore with 2 for all of the above reasons. Rationale for 2? It's always good to have a spare.
Good luck on your travels CMDR. If you need any advice just fire away.

I have just completed my first (three month), exploration trip in Horizons. I took two SRV's with me in case I lost one, but next time I think I will only take one. As long as you drive a bit carefully it is easy to avoid destruction and materials for repairing the SRV are plentiful.

I tried to end every session by landing on a planet and start the next one by searching out two or three outcrops of materials. Always found way more than I needed and returned with a full 300 materials.

i took 2 srvs on dwe and was very gratefull for that when i killed one at beagle point. i'm gonna refit my aspx for 3 srvs when i'm back in the bubble. can't have enough of them when you drive like a moron :D

I kind of get excited when you see a "flat" patch and then a bump appears, 2 is probably what I'd take.

Good discussion here though CMDRs

What I really enjoy is a long flat patch right next to a hilly region, best at right around .8 g (fun at other g values, too, but the sweet spot for me is around .8 because you get good lift and a nice quick fall). Get as big a jump as I can off the first hill, and try to land on the downslope of another so I can speed into successive jumps.

Yeah, I'll not be exploring with just 1 SRV. Haven't lost one yet, but it's certainly inevitable.
