DK2 owner: wait for CV2?

Hoping for some opinions from DK2 and CV1 owners who play ED. I'm quite happy with ED and 1.3, but miss the crispness of a big screen TV at 1080p resolution.

Resolution: I gather the CV1 has better resolution, but I'm not clear on the real-world difference: has the screen door effect been completely eliminated? Does it looks as crisp, or nearly as crisp, as on a 1080p monitor?

FOV: I've read some reviews that suggest you can see the borders of the headset - i.e. the CV1 has noticeably smaller FOV? Is this right?

God rays: Bothersome or tolerable?

Blacks/smear: Are the blacks.... well.... black? I've heard some say CV1 looks washed out. I've also heard the smears are worse than DK2 with 1.3. Thoughts?

Final question: For anyone who owns both - knowing what you now know, would you have kept using your DK2 and simply waited for the CV2?

Thanks in advance!

For background info, I've played ED in the DK2 enough to get "Elite" in combat, so that's a lot of hours, all in DK2.

My CV 1 arrived 2 weeks after the March 28 launch. I would never go back to DK2, being able to read all the text is amazing. No more leaning in, and sometimes guessing. The improvements in screen door effect is also important. The SDE is barely noticeable, more like a very fine linen effect. It's not quite crisp like 1080 monitor, but much improved from DK2.

The FOV, to me is also improved. Considering the hours I've put into the DK2, I'm pretty sure of what I'm seeing. I wear contact lenses so that might be a factor.

God rays are an issue, but I've learned to ignore them mostly. Because I see them in real life from years of astigmatism.

I don't see black smear in the usual spots I used to see them in the DK2. I just haven't seen them in Elite at all in the CV1.

I can't see myself using a DK2 anymore.

My DK2 shipped during the second week after launch, I used it almost every day for sessions ranging from an hour to several hours. I have had a CV1 for about 2 weeks now, again I use it almost daily for sessions ranging from one hour to several.

1. I find my CV1 a lot more uncomfortable than my DK2, I have to physically remove it at least once an hour as the it seems to put a lot of pressure on my brow area. Even when loose enough to fall down my face...

2. I find the 'God Rays' very noticeable, in two weeks of use they have not faded away as some suggest they will. Can you ignore them? Well I can't as they move with your head movement and seem to catch your eye. They are a big distraction imo and easily one of the worse aspects of the new unit.

3. 360 Tracking + longer lead. This is the CV1's number one advantage over the DK2 is you ask me. Being able to stand up and walk around your ships cockpit is awesome, particularly when there are no 'grey outs' as there were with the DK2.

4. Black smearing, I haven't really noticed any in Elite, 100% better than the DK2.

5. Resolution / image quality. Others praise the CV1's higher res and lower SDE. Personally I find the improvement small at best. Sure text is a little easier to read but the higher res has not helped eliminate what I found to be the most distracting image issue on the DK2- aliasing. Stations from a distance of just a 800M still look a jaggy mess, as do their interiors and hangers.

My opinion, if you are happy with your DK2 then only upgrade if you have too. The DK2 will not be supported forever but in some respects is a superior product, particularly when it comes to lenses. The CV1s higher res doesn't do that much to improve the VR image issues, such as the more pronounced aliasing distortion but with the reduced SDE textures do look nicer on a whole.

If Oculus / FDEV were continuing to support the DK2 my CV1 would be on FleeBay - today. I personally do not find it enough of an upgrade to warrant the cost.

Thanks guys. Seems like somewhat opposing viewpoints - which is pretty much what I think I see on the forum generally as it relates to Vive and CV1 vs. DK2. Am really on the fence....

Great depiction and advice, I too do not see 700 dollars worth of improvements in this HMD I expected it to be much better as a consumer product. Some are now calling it DK3 which I think is fitting as we are fiddling around with the damn thing

One of the main reasons that I bought a Rift is because I couldn't get the Elite experience I wanted from the DK2 after the recent runtime support turned to crap for it.

It looked good on 0.8 but the super cruise juddering made it unplayable.

It looked awful on 1.3, the smearing was horrific. It was however really smooth.

I simply wanted both and the CV1 delivered. Elite looks awesome and is really smooth on VR Low on my 970.

I find the CV1 much more comfortable, SDE is simply not there, God rays were initially annoying but ive tuned them out now.

The binocular field suffers from far less off axis distortion than the DK2 - people forget to mention just how much coma is present in the DK2.

In a nutshell I paid double the retail price and couldn't be happier with it, it's an awesome bit of kit and I definitely consider it a significant upgrade over the DK2 which is gathering dust.

On my DK2, the 1.3 update was great. Always had settings on Ultra, even with 0.8. Has always looked and played smooth as silk with my 970. Did not experience any of the symptoms you described. Yes, screen door was more obvious but almost never had any judder at all.

You got no smearing on 1.3 with the DK2 ?

no if you have the money BUY IT . had dk2 berfore and now CV1 its like 40%-50% better image. the screen door effect is way better and the lenses make everything sharp. those two things combinded and the better resolution makes it just funtastic. i was playing 300hr with the dk2 and now cv1 blown me away just make shure to turn of ambient oclusion cause the new frensel linses dont llke glowing stuff

None. Display was better than ever.

Can you share your settings, OS, PC spec?

I have a 980ti, i7-6700, 32 gig RAM (for DCS) and running on Win7 - I find the smearing in the DK2 terrible. Tried increasing gamma and that reduces it, but then space no longer is a blackness - it is a whiteness.....horrible.

Thanks in advance

WIN 7, 970, 12gig RAM, i7 3400. F.Y.I.:
I ALWAYS shut down all unnecessary running tasks before launching. I can also read all the text in the cockpit and menus without any difficulty. Not sure why, but its always been very clean and smooth on my DK2.

Runtime 5 and Reshade then set NVidea control panel to the settings in the Compendium sticky. Set the green HUD and that is it those settings look great in DK2 in fact the colors are better than what we have now for sure in CV1

Unfortunately besides the HUD colors, you can't do any of those tweaks anymore. Since only the latest runtime is supported now, you can't use old runtimes, Reshade, or control the color with the Nvidia controls. Runtime 5.0.1 with DK2 was by far the best experience I had with ED (better than the Vive I have now) and have been wishing for it to come back ever since.

For me CV1 compared with DK to is far away better BUT, the god rays spoil everything for me, to the point i'm still seeing if i adapt to them or sell the CV1

SDF, still sightly there but not a problem anymore, this and the improved resoultion makes a really difference.
smear.. definetly gone... now flying in a surface of a planet when is dark is delicious :p
Sweet spot.. everything looks crisp and clear.

But those god rays.... damn it, i still wonder if i's stronger in some devices than in others because the reflections all over the device kill my inmmersion totally.

Sold my DK2 in 4 hrs for enough money to make my CV1 purchase the same as the DK2. Not bad, might consider getting rid of them before the shoe drops on support. Could probably sell my new CV1 for enough to make the whole 2 years a wash then rebuy a new one with those funds.
DK2 = 350
CV1 = 600
sold DK2 for 590
Sell CV1 for 960
Buy CV1 for 600 = paid zero

WOW.. that's what i would call.. VR speculation.

Keep going and we will have a VR bubble soon haha...
