The Oculus Rift CV1 General Discussion Thread

Some people I think expect it to look as good as a monitor. We're a couple years away from that. I've seen really bad VR, perhaps that's the difference.[/QUOTE]

No if you can read again I have had a DK2 for nearly 2 years was not expecting a monitor duh, was expecting it to look as good or better than the DK2 which I had pretty much tuned in as good as it gets. This looks like crap, its grey, splotchy mess of colors.

What has you bugged? Is it the blacks? or the Gods rays? (verses the smearing of the DK2) I cannot believe, given time, that Frontier won't improve the CV1 experience. I have been reading every impression on every game people have been trying on their new cv1's especially ED and it would seem you are in a very small group of detractors. If you are indeed that unsatisfied I vote you get a refund. Personally, I can't wait till my CV1 arrives. I know I will not be disappointed. I can't wait to play ED , DCS world. Farcry 3and 4 Fallout 3and 4 etc etc etc and pretty much all the evidence of my continuing research suggests I will be very happy.
Cheer up mate

The God rays I can live with yeah they suck but do not ruin the game, the blacks and colors in general are aweful and actually I cannot even believe just how bad they really are. If you ever had a DK2 dialed in using Reshade you would know exactly what I am talking about. The comments on here sound like they are coming from complete newbies who have not seen the difference which is beneficial to them for sure.

I can't play this game in cv1 because of the blacks. They are terrible. I managed an hour tonight but honestly I think dk2 looked much better. I also have the red veil over dark scenes. I've opened a support ticket with oculus and they sent me a batch file which got rid of the red tint but unfortunately just turned it green instead.

The problem is not just ED it's bad in every app with dark scenes. ED just happens to be the worst.

Thank you I have the same issue and as I am playing it just ruins the whole experience having come from a properly working DK2. Really am not that bothered with the res or the god rays I think this black issue is the worst thing and is annoying as hell.

A quick question from me. Does the Oculus Rift register forward and backward head movement in E: D? Like if I lean in towards the side panels to see them clearer, do they come closer?

Thanks in advance. :)

Found this over at Oculus forum. Would be interested if you guys have tried this solution to blacks problem

Fresh install of windows 10, latest drivers for everything and my black issue is now sorted. Now black scenes are true black. Example: the void environment in Oculus video is now absolutely black, not a shade of dark grey as it was before, and the red smearing or haze seem to have gone also. Really happy now, this was the most disappointing part of the rift when i got it and I was starting to think it was a hardware fault. so happy now thing look so much better

I always have the latest drivers but fresh install of windows 10? That would equal another full day of just loading programs back on as I would lose everything again.

You should have read on another few posts. The problem returned again for him and is still unresolved.

Thanks for the feed back. It is interesting that for some it comes and goes depending on their fiddlings and that others have not remarked on it in their revues of ED on their CV1's. Suggests some sort of driver issue. Hope it gets sorted before my CV1 gets here. Given all the other things I will fly and drive I won't lose too much sleep over it as I think this will get solved. After all the now you see it now you don't nature of it seems to confirm it is a software issue.

warp speed to you

Thanks. Can anyone refer me to some video of this? I haven't been able to find video of the oculus rifts back and forward tracking.

Positional tracking is a fundamental feature of proper (ie, not Gear VR/Google cardboard) VR - not sure why you would even have thought it might not have this? :S

There have been videos of people walking around their cockpits from back in the DK2 day, which is just a more obvious version of what you're asking about.

Cheers Jabo. I've not seen these DK2 clips of which you speak. As I'm still on the fence about Oc or Vi, and reading about text clarity, I went looking for videos showing forward and backward movement while looking at the side panels, but found none.
I know the Vive has full room "awareness", and have seen videos with the Vive where commanders walk about their ships, but haven't seen this from the Oculus. Thus I end up on this thread asking you Oculus users for information regarding this particular feature. I've seen lots of up/down, left/right, but not any in/out (forwards/backwards).

If you could link to any footage, I would be truly grateful. :)

it does..... i have no video to show you, but it 100% does and has done ever since DK2... you have no worries at all on that.

its not ED but it shows how it works

That does indeed show forward motion very clearly. And you say this feature is supported in E: D as well? Ok, so one less concern. Man it's a tough call. But as I only plan to use VR for E: D, I guess the Oc is the most obvious.

I guess that leaves god rays, which both HMDs suffer from.

Thanks Mad M. :)

god rays are a thing in the rift... i have not tried the vive in ED, but i hear they are there but not as bad.

sadly, unfortunately ED is the worst game i have tried for seeing rift godrays (you see them generally in menus without really being a problem in game, but in ED you see them in game as well).

over all its still a brilliant experience 9and the image quality is so much better than in my DK2 that it is still a better experience in CV1). I cant say which HMD to buy..... only that, you should buy a HMD because no matter how you swing it, vive or CV1 - or DK2 tho i would not recommend that now unless v v cheap - once you play ED in VR there is no going back.

PS when worrying about VR just think back to 1990.
This could be the very moment watching this on TV that I officially became a VR fanboy..... and if those experiences can be compelling, just thing what we have now is!!!

Question for existing Rift owners - I'm likely to be playing in the Rift in the evenings but playing on my monitor during the day - how straightforward is it to switch between the two?

simple..... in the settings under the "3D" menu you can change to rift mode or not, its as simple as changing resolution.

you may want to make 2 custom control options tho, with headlook in the rift, it may free up options on your controls as some of the controls needed on a monitor will be redundant when in VR

Re: full positional tracking of Oculus in ED, it's an old DK2 video but here's Obsidian Ant walking around his cockpit ...
