Got my CV1 - Impressions
I7, nVidia 980ti, 16 gigs RAM, SSD - No judders, no slow downs. Ultra settings.
After waiting since 1990 or so for good VR, I have the Rift. First off, I have decided that the secret to VR is good head tracking. If the head tracking is smooth and accurate, your brain can forgive a lot of other issues. The Rift did not disappoint. After 3+ hours, I became very familiar with the Cobra Mk III cockpit. It was real.
Tip: Set up a command in Voice Attack for F12. I use "display reset". Sit back in your chair and do that.
Now the issues. God Rays. Yep, they are there. I learned to ignore them. It's like being in a J J Abrams Star Trek film. Live with it, and hope that there are replacement lenses someday. FOV: If you take the time to look, it's not that wide, but is fairly easy to ignore. What you will have to get used to is looking around the cockpit to see all the instruments. I think it actually adds to the experience.
If you wear glasses, I would suggest getting contacts. Glasses do not fit in there well, in my opinion. I'm going tomorrow to get fitted.
Motion Sickness: The worst was going into the debug camera and moving over the ship. Yikes, I almost puked. During play, there are ways to induce motion sickness, but I can't explain what those things are, you'll figure them out. The best way to avoid it is to just pretend you are really flying the ship, and don't do anything you wouldn't normally do in that situation. You can look around all you want - I wish I could explain it better, but if you try to make yourself sick, you can.
Resolution and Screen Door Effect: Is it perfect? Nope. But take it from someone who played VR games at Dave and Buster's in the 90s: It's damn good. And it's just going to get better. Look at it this way. If no one steps up and becomes an Early Adopter, we'll never have a second generation. You'll be amazed how much your brain wants to believe what it is seeing.
Controls: I use a Saitek 52 pro HOTAS and Voice Attack. Most of the game plays quite well - I've been practicing not using the keyboard for a while now. However, the Galaxy Map and the System Map do not play nice in VR, especially the System Map. I had to reach for the mouse, and CAREFULLY use it to scroll the System Map around. Your milage may vary.
I have the Nav and Systems panels on focus when looked at, and not the comms or SRV panels. It's very cool - turns out that when following a jump route, the Nav panel tells you how many jumps are left! Would never have known that.
Appearance: Big. Very, very Big. Scale is fantastic. All the descriptions in the world will not prepare you for it. I will NEVER play Elite on a monitor again.
Come in, the water's fine. [up]
