Noob needs an assist

Love the game conceptually. Want to do more in it, but can't for the life of me select anything in either system map or galaxy map. I dont even have a cursor in galaxy mode and the one I have in system mode does nothing. Please help, my game time is generally limited to an hour or so a day at best ame this has been frustrating.

Most likely, it's just glitched out on you. Try exiting the game, then load it up again.

A hard reset often helps most xbone issues - turn off the xbox by holding your finger on the console's power button until it switches off completely, wait for the light on the power brick to go orange, then push the power button again to turn it back on. Some people disconnect the power brick and tap the power button a couple of times to drain any residual power but I'm not sure that's necessary.

An xbox support guy told me that for a hard reset to be done properly you need to have "instant on" switched off, otherwise the xbox is never truly "off", but I couldn't swear to that.

Sorry if you knew all this :)

you are proberbly having this issue right?

The galaxy map is rubbish on Xbox, but you see those lines hovering above and below on the video, they kinda help you move through the z axis so you can select other stars.

You will also see the filters of star class etc i deselect in the video, make sure all these are de-selected.

hope that helps, and dont give up :) embrace the rubbish map :)

if you cant select anything at all, try restarting the game as this sometimes happens too!

I've never seen any bugs with the galaxy map (press X to toggle horizontal scrolling or vertical - I've never seen the cursor be affected in that map. press Y to zoom back to your current position. make sure your cursor isn't in one of the menus on the left, btw, else you won't be able to press on any star/system), but I do still have the issue on the system map where you can't select or highlight anything.

Unfortunately the only fix for that is to hit the guide button on the pad, press the Start button (or, er, whatever they're calling this time!) over the window'd Elite, and select quit. Then just click into the game again and when you're back in the cockpit, it should've fixed it.

Oh, and sometimes on both maps your cursor simply won't select anything... This happens after you've done some certain actions. Before trying to select whatever's highlighted, move the cursor once and then back to what you need, then you'll be able to activate what you want.

this is the most useful piece of information I have ever come across on any forum ever.

Well done sir, and thank you

The support guy was right. With 'instant on' switched on the drive doesn't shut down and the cache isn't wiped. Unplugging the whole thing for half a minute ensures all memory shuts down. This might help, OP.

Seriously? It's mentioned within the first 2mins of the Galaxy Map Training video... ;-)

Were those videos not always there, perhaps?

Probably, but I think you'll find that there are plenty of us who are of the 'feet-first' mentality. And then luck, intuition, and a smattering of having played an Elite game before kicked in and we've managed to wing it. That's me anyway, McGrew? Care to wade in?
Main point being there's a lot of ED that is (fairly) easy to access, then a shed-load more that's 'consult others' or 'maybe one day you'll stumble across something pretty vital!'
Eg, it was only today I learned (from this forum) the 7 (to 5) second rule regarding SC, and I've seen (and advised on) threads regarding SC where the 7-sec guide never came up.
I've said it before, I'll say it here: Patience is your absolute best friend when it comes to ED. Patience is also, I would say, the most rewarding way to play. Yeah, go ahead and Robigo your ass all the way to that' Conda. Then what? CoD fanatics need not apply.
'Elite: Dangerous - ADHD-unfriendly since 3300!'

I'm fine with learning by experience, but it was obvious ED wasn't exactly forthcoming... The training vids were my very first figurative port of call.

My own blindspot was FA; I didn't know till a few days ago that Y+Rb toggled it pretty effortlessly. Still, you can easily get by in Solo never touching FA, but not using the basics of the galaxy map?! C'mon! ;-)

As for patience: people play in all kinds of ways. If someone wants to rush to a 150million base value ship, then good luck to 'em if they enjoy that. I recently um'd and ah'd about whether to save a bit more and get an Asp Explorer for Horizons, which'd comfortably be my best ship thus far (well, the Cobra III'll likely always be my first true ED love - never gonna sell that ship). Except I really like the design of the Diamondback Explorer, and having never flown the Scout I'd like to fly the bigger brother.

Why should I just roll with stats as opposed to something in a game I'd enjoy? If I bought the AspX I'd have little reason to ever put the D/Explorer through its paces later on. So whilst it's the lesser option, I'll be going with what I want to have fun with, as it is a game that's supposed to provide enjoyment.

So yeah, whilst there are many ways to enjoy an individual game, whims, immersion, and fun are generally my guiding - ahem... - stars. Well, apart from throwing a few hundred thousand in charity at Tun's Wart to boost my damned Navy rank a bit... ;-)

Videos haha,

There was training missions and then here's your keys to the sidewinder, I cant remember videos being there when I first played, it was pre release, I may have also overlooked them as a snatched the sidewinder keys and skipped off to the ship hanger

If I remember right I had a demo version first where you could play the training missions only, and after playing them I bought it and jumped straight into open play
