Setting out for the Core of the Galaxy

I am going to be setting out for an expedition to the galactic core soon, I have my cobra, just need to get it fitted for it. If anyone has any suggestions on systems I should visit, please post it in the replies :D Edit: Thanks for the good luck and tips guys, I will not be waiting for Horizons for this journey, this might take a few months, depending on if I want to keep going after I visit the core, I will be visiting SagA* though, I have been wanting to go there for a while. If you could, please name any brown dwarf fields that I need to look out for, same goes for any white dwarf fields. My main goal for this mission is basically to record as much of my journey as possible so I can show my girlfriend the potential that Elite Dangerous has, she loves exploration and I'd love to show her how much there is to see in Elite. Thank you Commanders, fly safe.

Stop by the Coalsack nebula on the way out. It seems like a long way to get there but on the way back it means you're almost home.
Also, Shapley 1, a huge Wolf-Rayet star which is just gorgeous.
NGC 6357, a spectacular blue nebula which gets more spectacular the closer you get, and Great Annihilator. The most impressive black hole in the galaxy.

Nice, any particular systems to lock onto in the nebulas? and what system is the Great Annihilator in?

The usual, bring heat sinks and repair units. The nebulas on the way are quite breathtaking. Especially when you go from them being a small point in the distance to taking up your entire screen as you get closer.

One piece of of advice I have is to beware of brown dwarf fields. When you are down to half tank of fuel, start thinking about fuel scooping. Check your plotted route for scoopable stars at that point. If you won't be coming to one on your plotted route, manually choose one and then continue on. KGB FOAM

I wish you luck and safe travels! My biggest piece of advice, pay attention. The #1 killer of explorers is complacency, it nearly killed me on my SagA* trip a couple times.

Definitely heat sinks like Doc said. I didn't need mine but there were a few moments when I narrowly escaped getting cooked by some binary stars. I got lucky and had my finger on the heat sink trigger just in case I didn't get out of the oven in time.

Best of luck, CMDR.

EDIT: Oh I forgot to mention, right outside of the bubble is Wolf-Rayet CSI-19-18107. An absolutely gorgeous Wolf-Rayet star that's on the way to the core and worth checking out.

Good luck to you commander.

I'm half way to the core by now also in a cobra mk3 with 22.7 jump range and as said above, bring heat sinks. I got trappet between 2 stars once and could have used them but i was so freaked out i completely forgot about them. Also a repair unit. Medium if you want to be on the safe side.

I visited about 4 nebulas on my way. The last one was Trifid nebula. I got kind of stuck there because there were many brown dwarfs in the area but nothing to bad. Also whenever you jump throttle down at the count down if you don't know that already.

Also bring alot of patience with you. 10 tonnes minimum:D.
I have no rush to get there and i regularly just drop out of supercruise just to look at the bright center of the galaxy as it grows bigger and brighter. Absolutely love it.
Go to sagittarius first, then visit the great annihilator. That way you can stare in awe twice as sagA is a little underwhelming if you saw the great annihilator first.

Everytime you hit a brown dwarf, go to the galaxy map and look if you can proceed jumping to the next system or if you have to take a small detour.

In any case have fun being away for a while.

Thanks CMDRs for the Cobra set-ups. I'll be heading out myself after Horizons drops. Need to earn a few more quid first though. Back to the Rares.

The slow change in your surroundings is my favourite bit about going to the core, especially if it takes a few weeks.
Due to the route plotter going haywire near the center (too much stars by square-inches) I had to take a detour from the "top" of the galaxy in order to facilitate my final approach. This impression of being on top of a galaxy-sized plate and then diving into a sea of clouds stars is one the most memorable moments of my video game life. That and finally coming back safely with minimal damage sustained obviously (**** you dual stars).

With a cobra, the route plotting will likely be better in the core. From what I understand d it becomes a real issue in ships with 30+LY jump range. Not sure if there is truth to that and if so why that is, but I think I read it when trying to find a work around for the route plotting.

I had major issues in my Asp, and at the time the max jump range on that was around 27LY.

Did you make sure to shut off the oven before you left home? I left mine on when I went to the galaxies core and had to have some strangers shut it off and take care of my pets.....Wasn't a welcome site when I got home...

Around 400Ly is the farthest I've gone so far (I've been holding out for Horizons... ), but yeah, that's arguably what makes this game so damn special.

Away from min-maxing builds, grinds/time sinks, Powerplay, impending RNG (not a fan), the sense of immersion given by simply moving around the galactic simulation is incredible.

Are you planning on taking an SRV? Because then you'll have to make a sacrifice on internals.

I really wanted to take a Diamondback Explorer out there, with an SRV, but despite its impressive capabilities and jump range, it has even less internals than the damned Cobra... So I'm not sure how I may or may not square that circle.

They'll have to fit the DBX with a long-deserved class 5 internal slot or nobody will use it any more. There's no point

The DBX is still an excellent explorer at a relatively low price. You can easily get 30LY+ jump range with relatively low investment. And its basic fuel tank is huge (for a ship this size), so that's one internal that won't be taken for that.
