Elite Dangerous 2.4... ships fighters?

The really big challenge (in my view) of implementing the ability to walk around in a ship or on a station is: why? It's not that I don't want to. I'm *really* eager to take a stroll around my Fer-de-Lance, and around the space stations I visit. But there has to be a compelling in-game reason or me to do so.

We're so used to doing everything in seconds that the reality of getting out of our ships, walking around to ship dealers, ship repairmen, and seedy bars to sell crap on the black market would be so time consuming that none but the most dedicated RPers would do it after a time or two. And that would be a tragic waste of developer time and effort.

So- what then? What should walking around let us do that the station terminal doesn't (other than have gunfights)? And should being a pedestrian be something that everyone can do, or would we need to have that be a paid season?

So many questions surrounding this idea.

So many

just spit balling...

Must EVA to perform hull repair

Irregular cargo that cannot be scooped

Facilitate fuel transfer when limpits are not available

Some cool screenshots

More face to face interaction with NPCs at stations. Visit bar or employment office for missions or crew.

And, most importantly, platforming mini-game ;)

You can see how it works out already in the SC Alpha - people run everywhere constantly to get places asap - and our stations are true scale not their handful of corridors so the journeys would be longer. The wandering around the ship to look at the exterior we have already, and we've all grown bored and laughed at NPC conversations in every game ever so I really don't want to talk to my passengers past the mission briefing's requirements. What if they want to talk football all the journey?

Really do want more to explore - but dead cities in an SRV or huge space hulks drifting like giant carcasses with nothing to stop you flying inside and trying to see with our measly headlights.... on foot adds nothing but programming complexity, and a zillion videos of motion interaction bugs. which could be funny, but not immersive at all.

Walking around will be a major new update I would think, as that will be massive. How they will do it as the stations are huge, I have no idea. Would be great walking aound one of the habitat rings look at the ships fly into the dock.

Likely your freedom will be pretty limited on stations. Something like, resident only doors and sectors. While I'd like to be able to walk in a huge PG station...I'm not sure it is something feasible in the near term.

Yep, I agree, but I can still see it as being a major update instead of a minor one.

Station vehicles?

What's for sure is that once we get legs, the scale of things will start to appear and it will definitely be a game changer. Slowing down the pace by significant margin which isn't necessarily bad if the rewards scale enough to make up for it.

The first appearance of Thargoids in the space in 2.4 ? While waiting for the civilization of Thargoids in another season

ED 2.4 will *finally* bring us trumbles.

I really don't want to walk around :(

It'll just be people running everywhere because what used to take seconds now takes most of minute of getting places and waiting your turn in line.
I do want to walk , maybe FD will make it forced walk when in stations unless there is a fight or something else going on that makes it you need to run.

Ok, I'll predict that 2.4 will be named "Passengers". There will be a load of new mission types built around having more people on your ship.
2.4 will also see the introduction of a new ship, the Dolphin, and several new internal compartments to support live passengers.

The Season 3 headline feature will be on-foot gameplay, enabling us to shoot our passengers, etc.

is not 2.4 space farm simulator? where we can build modular stations and move them around, put stations inside stations and also stations inside thargoids?
Can I start being disappointed now because of the RNG involved in it? want a poll?? :D

Probably walking around stations and ships tied to new missions ;)
or 2.4 Marines - boarding actions

I'm betting 2.4 is this. Thargoids invade the galaxy and start showing up everywhere shooting at us. All of season 2 seems to be fleshing out combat, so it would only make sense to end it with something new to use all of those new combat abilities on. Crafted weapons, multicrew ships, fighters, followed by hostile aliens.

For the record I'd abso-frackin-lutely LOVE for 2.4 to be an exploration focused update, but based on the history of content from FDev coupled with the roadmap for season 2, I don't think there's any chance of it sadly. [sad]

My thoughts are and have always been;

2.4 is the first appearance of a sentient alien race. Maybe not Thargoids but definitely whatever is associated with the UAs and Barnacles.

I then feel like 3.0 will let us walk around our ships, with 3.1, 3.2 etc being the addition of station interiors, EVAs etc

No No No. X rebirth did this and it was utter trash. You longed for the return of the computer interface to buy stuff. Walking around and meeting people on stations should be for other reasons entirely. Not sure what but not the bread and butter of the gameplay.

Maybe for certain missions you have to meet some geezer in a bar or skulking in a warehouse or something, imagine the tiny parps that your nether regions would make having to meet some shady dealer in a disused cargo bay to collect some loot to deliver or drop off a shadow delivery of some kind (not slaves of course) not knowing whether you will get paid or get more than you bargained for from him and his goons! For those missions it would work really well. In fact I'd like the black market to have this too as it always seems weird to me that I can access illegal dealings through a public computer interface. Anything that's standard though is best done through the commodities board or outfitting screen. Fast, legal and you are on your way. The illegal stuff would of course have to pay more or else some of the more credit minded types would complain that the smuggling and such doesn't pay enough per hour due to having to walk around and actually interact with the universe.

We've been told pretty firmly we will not meet the Thargoids first - and what's more we should be glad of that, they saw the "war" as a minor border skirmish.

But aliens yes - after all when a star goes nova if anyone lives nearby they gotta get moving quickly
