What's your ship?

I'm curious, what kind of ship are you exploring in and why?

For my part, I've been flying an Adder. By my estimation, you need 5 pieces of gear: D Scanner, Adv Scanner, Scoop, SRV and Shield. The Adder has space for all that, and is so inexpensive. My alternative is the T6 Transport, which has space for 7 pieces of gear, meaning I could add cargo space and a refinery or docking computer. Each ship can manage a range of about 30LY per jump, which is quite satisfactory.

An Asp Explorer.

Great jump range.

A sidewinder...cos I like a challenge...

Frawd

A Python for long trips, a stripped-down Diamondback Explorer when long jump ranges are needed, and an A-spec'd Asp for everything in between.

Asp X. The complete explorer. Best view by far and just the right combination of module slots to build a ship to be able to land on anything and still get 34lY jump range. I don't know how far you have been out yet but once you venture beyond 10Kly, an AFMU is a very nice bit of kit to have in case of accidents. Also get the biggest scoop you can afford.

Couldn't live with the T6 or the Keelback, the cockpit feels wierd to me.

I explored for ages in a Cobra mkIII and it's very capable too.

|Go Asp X![up]

Iv now got 3 Exploration ship's

A 29.1LY jump range Asp - best ship in my opinion - got me to Beagle Point & back.

A 20LY jump range Python - kitted out & was Exploring just b4 DWE - needs some work to extend jump range.

A shiney new 33.1LY jump range Anaconda - bought & kitted from my DWE data. Currently trying it out on the M & G trip before going out on the CNE.
First impressions are.....it's REALLY, REALLY SLOW!!!....it turns like a 'Super Tanker in a Storm'.
I feel it will significantly slow down my Exploration style & couldn't have imagined keeping up with the DWE main fleet in it.
I'm not sure yet if I can get used to it in the long run - Iv been 'spoiled' by the amount of time I'v spent in my Asp.

I've been thinking about this as an explorer. Any idea of exactly how far your Explorer ratings improved (or how many credit$$ you made) when selling your DWE data?

I'm part way through Ranger level and have been thinking i'd like to be able to say i've been to Sag A and/or Beagle Point as a bit of a badge of honour. I reckon the exploration data from a long trip like that might put me over the Explorer edge and get me Elite.

Don't judge, I've been out since the day after Horizons hit so I packed prepared... Just a touch overkill me-thinks.

Currently on route to the bubble for a quick re-arm/re-stock and outfitting change to this:

Slightly less overkill but still quick and shielded. (quick is a relative term :p). Won't be selling data, just nip in and out of a station.

I made Explorer Elite about 12 months ago - after my trip to Sag A* - I got 160mil from that trip!

My DWE data netted me 280mil credits, I spread it all through quite a few systems to improve my rep with Alliance & Federation Factions. I don't do Community Goals, so none went there.

It depends on your exploration style - I normally scan everything in a system except Asteroids & Ice/Rock worlds.
However on the route back from Beagle Point I did stop scanning in the Abyss - because I needed to concentrate on getting out of it!. Also I did speed up my style from time to time by not scanning HMC worlds occasionally - I probably could have made another 5-10mil, but wanted be sure to get home in time for 2.1.

ASP X here as well. The only other ship I've had aside from the mighty sidey was the Viper, which earned me the money for a stock ASP. I'm now working towards a good scoop and 2x or so insurance cover in case I break it. Selling my guns and downgrading everything else to drop weight will buy me the rest of the modules. It's nice to have a 30+ range and room enough for multiple SRVs. I'll even have enough space left for a lounge, pool table and mini bar. So party on my ship whenever we land.

I've only been playing ED for a couple of weeks, so it hasn't been hard to get the ship. I just need to think of a name for it. I'm thinking The Mighty Duck. :S I've bought some yellow paint for it too. :D

Used to explore in an Asp, now I do it in an Anaconda. Ship choice is a personal thing, and what people like varies - for example, some really love the view from an Asp, and while it's certainly good I find it's cockpit.. well, boring. Chair, glass, lakon workbench. Snooze. Conda has a bridge that actually looks like a starship bridge. Sure it has less of a view (which is what debug cam is for anyway), and some don't like how you can see the hull from under you, to me it just feels like a mini star destroyer, and frankly the view isn't that bad.

Some don't like how she handles in supercruise, tbh it didn't take me long to get used to it. Of course it doesn't handle like much smaller ships, but I found that once you get used to it you instinctively start to maneuver around a system in a way that saves time. In the end I find I don't spend more time in systems, normally, than I would in an Asp.

The things about it you can't argue with are the best range in the game and generous internals allowing you to fit anything you could possibly need and then some. For me this is the end game exploration ship - at least, until they come up with something that can challenge it for that spot.

For my part, I've been flying an Adder.

I was in the Adder for about 3 weeks, but after about 3 deaths at the hands of random NPCs that wiped out half my earnings I was very happy to leave it for the safety of the nearly uncatchable Cobra III. I loved the Cobra III, but moved into the Asp-X as soon as I could afford one. Asp-X seems the best of the current ships for my style, and I have another configured as a long range heavy hauler. The explorer is Gatyaskuvik (coriolis link) and the trader is the Boar of Typhon (Coriolis link).

i have earned my first AspE by exploring in an adder - great ship, OP!

i have flown quite a lot of ships for exploring: Adder, Cobra MKIII, AspE, DBS (!), DBE, Eagle, Anaconda - and tested some others: t6, Python, Courier, Clipper.

i loved the DBS most, but curently i need more jumprange and an internal more. currently i run exploration DBE, AspE, Anaconda. DBE for everything up to 10k ly, because it gives me that beautifull "small ship in a big galaxy"-feeling i know from my Adder, while still having a fantastic jumprange. AspE for sure the best "allround"-explorer .... i have to often sold it and bought it back, but i also have spend to much time in it. Anaconda for very long tours, when i don't land often... i love that floating feeling piloting an Anaconda in supercruise.

Currently in an Anaconda and, whilst a great exploration vessel, it does take some getting used to (especially after flying an Asp out to BP and back). Had to restart my current venture due to self inflicted damage caused by lack of familiarity with the beastie.

I started with exploring just a week ago, and I wasn't yet sure if it would hold my interest and be fun for extended trips. I spent quite some time earning money for an Asp Explorer, which will be my long-range exploration ship in the future.

But the first ship I was actually using for exploration was the Cobra MkIV. Sure, you can't get much jump range out of it (20 LY for me), but it has more internal modules than the Asp, and you can comfortably pack AFMUs, double SRV hangars, shield, scoop, cargo racks and everything you need in there. And it costs less than half of a fully specced exploration Asp.

For me, it was the perfect ship to try out exploration, I can highly recommend it.

Good question OP, I love both of my explorer ships, both are multi roles and they are:

ISS Terra Nova (Anaconda) Currently exploring in her on my way home from DWE:
http://coriolis.io/outfit/anaconda/...4yvZdjhA.Aw18ZlA=?bn=ISS TERRA NOVA (Explorer)

ISS Damocles (Asp E) Veteran explorer asp(E), My first serious explorer ship which got me to sag a* and back:
http://coriolis.io/outfit/asp/02A4D...3v62i2f.AwRj4jTZeo==.Aw18WQ==?bn=ISS DAMOCLES

I love them both in equal measure, and I was very torn between them when planning my ship for DWE, as my CMDR colleagues can wearily testify to:)

I've yet to fly anything that's not a Cobra. I backed the kickstarter to a point where I started in one and I've never changed. My exploration build is in my sig, Silence Unbounded and me are currently out on the Abyssal Plain about 60kly from Sol and 10,000 systems into the current trip.
