I dunno, but now I'm even more suspicious of people that send me unsolicited in game friend requests out of the blue.[where is it]

DX Diag to CMDR name to befriending to IP address to ISP provider to country and city then address, sounds like a lot of effort for petty larceny

My first thought was harassment by a mob for expressing an opinion which get fanboys furious. Imagine if someone from some gamergate type fiasco had previously posted their DX Diag.

OK, the machine name thing is fair enough. Thanks to Windows' brain-dead defaults, for a lot of folk it will be <Name>-PC which could be problematic for those who don't want any aspect of their real name made public. My machine names are all unique, but I always try to redact them out anyway because it's good practice.

It's certainly the case that people should be made aware that the default machine name, which may contain aspects of their real name, can be leaked by the output of tools such as DxDiag.

(Tangent: it used to amuse me, back in the heyday of WinMX and the like, when people would give themselves hacker-like handles such as St4rKill3r or Cyb3rM4$t3r but then share their default documents folder of C:\Windows\Users\Quentin Molesworth\My Documents.... You could freak them out by waiting for them to sent a chat message requesting a queue-jump, and respond with "Sorry, Quentin. Can't help you..." And as for some of the personal documents they used to accidentally share! Your eyes would be out on stalks.)

But as for the rest of the hardware enumeration? I can't imagine that it increases the possible target surface by much if at all. When it comes to remote attack I guess there's a very small chance that someone could construct a sort of "spear phishing malware" that targets vulnerabilities in a specific user's hardware, a sort of Stuxnet-lite. But they'd still need to get the user to run code, or visit an unsafe website with no protection against XSS or similar. And if the target is the sort of user who would do that, a generic malware package would be just as easy to install as a targeted one. The effort hardly seems worth it.

Knowing what router the target has might be of more use, but such things aren't present in DxDiag.

And when it comes to physically locating someone, if the target is the sort of person who uses Windows' default naming schemes for machines and document folders, chances are they've already leaked much more personally identifiable information onto the internet than anything in a DxDiag. You yourself mentioned the log files in early versions of ED, that recorded both machine names and WAN IPs. If someone wants to know who or where you are there's a good chance they already do.

Whether they'd want to use that information to escalate to stealing your kit, or maybe just to cut the power to your house to give them a tactical advantage, is unclear. Now there's a real tinfoil hat scenario.

Seriously, asking for DxDiag files to be posted to public forums is quite common and certainly not unique to ED. If there was a serious risk associated with this it would have come to light by now. There is also a small but non-zero chance that another user might spot some common ground between their hardware list and yours, and thereby speed up the hunt for a solution to an issue. Very few people would do that, of course, but then very few people would use the same information to target someone. I guess it's up to each individual to decide whether the very slight chance of a benefit outweighs the very slight risk of some sort of nefarious activity.

But the default machine name thing bears repeating. If your machine name is "Bob's PC" or similar, consider changing it to something more generic. It's just about the only significant thing that might "leak" in a DxDiag, but is equally likely to leak through other means. As with most things on the periphery of security, exactly how significant you consider that to be is down to the individual user.

DX Diag to CMDR name to befriending to IP address to ISP provider to country and city then address, sounds like a lot of effort for petty larceny.
My first thought was harassment by a mob for expressing an opinion which get fanboys furious. Imagine if someone from some gamergate type fiasco had previously posted their DX Diag.

Such things have indeed happened, but if you think about it the first step in the chain above -- the DxDiag itself -- is irrelevant. The real jumping off point is the IP address, something that's not in the DxDiag but was in the early ED log files and is recorded by just about every website you visit. DxDiag is a red herring here.

A healthy paranoia regarding internet security is perfectly fine and a good thing to cultivate. But posting hardware diagnostics to public forums will not open the gates of Hell. Just change (or redact) the machine name and you'll be golden.

As far as I can see Support sometimes asks for the Dxdiag.

Some people then take the easy method of copy/paste and post it in on the forum instead of mailing or attaching to a support ticket.

Paranoia is real.
I love people who think they are so important that somebody would go so far as finding something out about them through posted Dxdiag files. Marvelous :)

I've taken note of some of them, and likely know (but have chosen to overlook and forget) some people's real names, et cetera. I've worked in cyber security before though, so these sort of things stand out to me.

They'd really only need the commander name and ask you to upload system information through the launcher. All that does is upload XML output format from dxdiag. No need to copypasta the unstructured mess that is the plain text format all over the place.

off the top of my head?
Because it contains information about the hardware being used when a bug was found - the amount of RAM, the version number of the drivers, etc.
Thats useful in determining if its a driver glitch they already know about and can suggest upgrading, or if its something else

Wow..... You know, if I was a burglar I'd think this sounded like a lot of work, when in that same amount of time I could've just picked a neighborhood, cruised the back roads and knocked off about eight different houses simply because no one was around.

But I guess if you really, realllllly want a Warthog that badly....

and yet the OP probably freely gives apple or android all his information and they share it with all the big comapnies and they are not the most secure of companies but thats not a problem

Where do these DxDiag reports come from?

Oh, right, some software developed by Microsoft. A company who has been in the news quite a bit lately for their invasion of privacy and rampant datamining of users who own their products, along with some very slimy, underhanded tactics to force users to upgrade to the latest version of their OS that borders on making previous version of Windows become malware while the latest version is nothing short of a full set of spyware that records pretty much everything you do, and eve listens to you while you talk if you leave a mic active.

GCHQ / NSA has all of that info, your real name, work / home address, passwords, phone numbers, full access to your emails, websites visited, lists of your friends, their contact info, notes on how often you talk to them and about what and there is no objection at all about that.

Welcome the the 21st Century. Tinfoil hats are now obligatory.

...what you look like naked, on your sofa, eating a giant packet of lorenz curly's.

I should really disconnect my webcam.

you don't have to post them, and you probably also can just send them in a PM to the QA/Support person that asked for if you have concerns about privacy. But then again, who knows what does guys are up to.... :D

If you use the forums to log bugs than you'll post the diag in public. If you use a support ticket to file a bug you can attach the diag to the ticket and its private. I've always used support tickets to file bugs.
