[Alternative activities] To Mine or not to Mine ?

I have not engaged in mining for a long long time(since before limpets) , so I thought since I have tested many things in Engineers Beta, I might as well catch up with Mining(I think limpets came out with 1.4/1.5 ?)

So , well !!! I never !!! It is really fun :) loved it :)
but....... not for me, not even as a temporary distraction(rest) from exploration :D

My order of ED activities :
Exploration
Smuggling/Dark missions
SRV exploits :D
Missions
CG
Trading
Powerplay
CQC
Bounty Hunter/Combat
Mining

So when I need a break from Exploration, I will go dark & naughty , again :D

If Mining is for you(as a rest from exploration) then :

(remember range is not an issue if you mine in the bubble, otherwise adjust the fittings)

I am going mad, but I'm sure I saw some some of comment that you can pick up materials while mining. So instead of using SRV you can use Mining Laser. May be of some use to exploration builds that have limited internals (i.e. Sidey). I'm going to drop my heat sink launcher as soon as I get a chance and perhaps replace it with a Mining laser. It's one thing I haven't done yet. (Also depends on if Jaques arrives and what facilities the station has - might be able to refit the Fireclown as a miner)

(I know you need more stuff for "proper" mining but if the materials thing is correct, you only need the laser for that.)

Yeah, you can, I have a thread about it buried somewhere down here. :) (Edit: Here)
Both classes of mining laser have only 2 tons of mass, by the way.

I honestly love mining in Elite, and when I’m not exploring chances are I’m blasting rocks in planetary rings collecting ores. I used to mine in my Clipper but I just bought myself a new Python last night for mining and outfitted it like this: http://coriolis.io/outfit/python/06...05044a1vC0C0P4.AwRj4yoo.EwBj4ypBGOg=?bn=Miner

After 2.1 hits this Thursday I will check out a few engineers first, but very soon after that my number one thing to do is to go ice ring mining in my new Python! From everything I’ve read it is not as profitable as metallic ring mining, but I’m hoping missions can alleviate that some. I’m just glad we now have reasons to fly in ice rings. With the Python I can now land at outposts for mining missions, that’s a great benefit over the Clipper. I haven’t seen too many surface bases giving mining missions but I plan to look for some. I just love flying down to surface bases, so if I can run back and forth between rings and planet surfaces I’d be a happy commander.

The python is truly a brilliant ship, even after the nerf. Now we can de-nerf it with engineers. Big ship characteristics, but can land on med pads. Miner, mission runner, smuggler, trader, and explorer. Not bad in combat either.

When I return from my latest extra-Bubble expedition at the end of the weekend I plan to spend my new funds on a mining outfitted Asp-X and try mining for the first time.
