I don't want to go off-topic but I actually find this quite troubling... I say the following having only upgraded to an Xbox One last year.
Console generations have always been about 8-10 years. Which is fine, if you're going to drop 100s of your hard earned cash on a console, you feel comfortable with it because you know that it will last you all those years. Apparently now though, Microsoft and Sony are not happy with that anymore and they want that fat console sale income earlier. So, what do they do? Start the next console generation a mere 4 years after the previous one.
Of course, they have argued that it's still essentially the same console because it plays the same games but lets face it, it's got better specs, it's a new console gen. Game devs including Bathesda have already stated (when it was announced) that the PS4 Neo is a bad idea because it will be terrible for game development considering there will be two sets of specs for essentially the same console.
That article in the first post stated that they didn't know if this was Microsoft's plan all along or if it was because Sony announced a more powerful PS4... OF COURSE it was because of Sony! It's so painfully obvious that Microsoft might aswell of said "Yeah, a new, better Xbox One is coming because we want some of that early console sale cash too."
In summary, we now have a 4 year console gen. I dread to think what will happen to console gaming if these updated consoles sell well. I suspect one day us console gamers will be forced into "updating" our consoles in some way every 6 months to a year just like the PC guys with their rigs. Which is exactly what console gamers want to avoid, it's the entire reason we play games on consoles in the first place.
