oh dear.. Felicity wants me to shoot Barnacles

BTW, if it is not a bug but a feature, it should be mentioned in patch notes and/or in some document called "What's new in release X.Y.Z", like in all other MMO games, when some major game mechanics are changed in new update. In majority of games, those game mechanic changes are oficially announced in advance, before the patch take place.

Nothing mentioned in the patch notes. Guess it's a bug.

Wait what, barnacles are broken? For long have they been? Even without being the entry fee for one of the engineers, shouldn't that have been fixed, like, long ago, then?

THey are broken for me since the update hit today. They're all destroyed, nothing makes them respawn anymore.

A winter storm...? ;) ;)

Hehe.

Yes, you're right. FD should tell us all the changes that are happening in the various stories playing out in the galaxy, that way we wouldn't need to do anything.

Not only tell us in advance, but also throughly test and balance all those changes during Beta phase of the update. This is the main reason why those Beta versions exists. Some ideas are implemented and rejected after some tests, some are polished, various player stats are changed a bit etc.
Nothing fancy, just a normal bussiness in game development.

All it serves to do is frustrate people to the point that they will just leave the game and wait until the Cannon group figure it out. Maybe a month would do it.

Frankly, I will do exactly that. Not bother until we have reliable info how to get them, then get my Asp, fly out there, collect one, return and unlock the engineer. I don't have the time to spend days just figuring out where/how to get the stuff. Engineers are time consuming enough once you have unlocked them.

Yes. I think that this is same here. One would say, that in the game update called "Engineers", there will be actually some engineers present at the moment of update launch, prepared to serve and deliver some upgrades to players. At least the smallest one.
FD has really a strange bussiness model, especially if we can take as a fact that approx. 90% of player base is not reading the discussion forum at all and have absolutely no idea that something like Cannon group exists.

To be fair, that engineer is explorer-themed. Best go out and start exploring!

Which is why involved Barnacles and such objects assuming Frontier haven't re-invented Meta-Alloys is just daft.

It's bad enough that one of the requirements to 'prove you're a explorer' is to just take a stroll 300LY from your starting system which is absolutely sod all and has nothing to do with actual exploration... but to then potentially further lock exploration themed engineers behind going to static well documented tourist attractions to shoot things is even more absurd.

They might as well have said:

Go prove you're a explorer and do these explorer themed things by going to down to a random planet in the populated bubble and fly around in a circle for 5 hours until you luck out on a random POI that has evil drones that have a 2% chance to drop a 'Iz a hawt explorwerz' certificate to become fully certified.

Now if they have re-invented the very nature of Meta-Alloys and tied it to REAL exploration, that would be interesting but Frontier should have at least mentioned that Meta-Alloys now come from another activity altogether. But if it's still Barnacles and they've just moved them, that's not really tieing it to exploration as frankly Barnacles never were about exploration... people flooded the forums harassing devs for more information and played a game of "Study the frozen trailer frame image" until Frontier released tons of pointer information to tell everyone where to go.

But it's looking like players like myself who were 3,000LY+ from the bubble with dozens of first discoveries and materials from all over the galaxy are faced with having to return to the bubble and go to local tourist attractions to prove to a engineer that we're explorers just to get access to them.

So in my eyes all signs point to Frontier really screwing up some of the engineer unlock requirements introduced live.
