Engineers Are there any clues or is the player forced to google?

The current war state of the system is affecting supply of Soontil Relics.

Help get the conflict resolved and supply should resume..

Would be nice. Or even some form of in-game information/bulletin board/forum system, that provides an easy way for Commanders to exchange/trade info at Space Stations.

Would certainly add a new level of depth and allow more people to join up for wings or crew a ship. It would be more realistic that commanders would relax in a lounge or bar area and socialise with other commanders whenever they stopped at a station for refuelling, trading and outfitting their ships.

This for the soontil relics. Apparently they are going to put in a fix so that the system spawns at least one for you to satisfy the engineer. And the meta alloys are normally obtained from the barnacle sites, however it appears there is a bug that is preventing the spawn. So they will be available for sale from Maia

The first thing I did after launching Enginerrs was to alt tab and google where to find meta-alloys.

Ridiculous

Pretty sure all the items have been mentioned in galnet from time to time, I know for a fact that if you look in the commodities market meta alloys are in there, you might not be able to buy them but there is a chunk of information about them for certain.

A search option in Galnet would be very useful. Players would then search "meta-alloys" and the articles involving them would come up. A bit of in-game detective work, where you read the articles and then try to piece together the information. Deduct the time-line of the whole barnacle thing and then search the candidate locations. That would even feel rewarding gameplay-wise, feeling like you've accomplished something.

Going out-of-game for this and looking for spreadsheets is not good :p In fact, I would avoid looking at out-of-game spreadsheets and prefer the in-game detective way. Would be more fun. It would make me feel "hey, this makes sense." Currently, it doesn't make much sense.

There was a galnet article some time back (early 2015) about the soontil relics. There also is an old (early 2016) galnet article containing the coordinates for a barnacle.

go about your normal ED business and you MIGHT fall on top of the required items

Thats what it appears to be for me

Thanks for the laugh...yep just go about your business among 400 billion systems with dozens of planets, moons, POIs and stations in each one!!! Remind me not to ask you anything..ever!

Normally i would agree, but it's in the corner of the eye and full of NPC spam. If we had a chat window right in front of us, well, maybe the community spirit would be a bit stronger.
You know how sorry that excuse sounded? :)

As for clues I suggest to pepper NPC chatter with hints and suggestions for players. It is nice way to extend mechanic and give players ideas.

There is definitly a need for some kind of encyclopedia inside the game where players can get background information about all these stuff, including a brief history about the major factions and other important characters, summaries of important stories, general lore etc.
Refering to GalNet articles does not work since you can only access articles a few months old. New players are totally on their own.

Unfortunatly, some time ago David Braben said that althought this would be cool thing, it would be too much work.. I hope they will change their mind some time..

I agree with Micheal, I was just at Darnelles progress (As I already know where to find MA) but I've never heard of soontil relics so I just asked the players while I was there and they were very helpful! :) I do love this community, Although now I've read they may be bugged too :(

I am a little bit torn apart here.

On one hand, I do understand that FD loves to have a strong and communicative community. Working together in order to find things (out), gathering data and sharing it with others is an awesome thing to have!

On the other hand, I agree with the OP. A game (any game!) shouldn'd rely on external information. There should be perfecly valid in-game ways to get access to every information you need.
I'm not saying it should be easy - not at all! I appreciate the necessity to do a propper research, hunt for treasures, fulfill long "quests".
But I need at least some "bread crumbs", hooks that give some innitial information where to start. Sheer luck of stumbling over something exciting (e.g. barnacles) isn't the solution, imo.

The initial hunt for these alien(?) structures was fine, I guess. There were galnet news about them.
However, if a new player comes to the game now, those galnet articles won't be accessible in-game any more. He doesn't even know, they ever existed!
So, how to get access to the necessary information? Maybe, this new player prefers to play in solo-mode, too, so he isn't able to ask other commanders.

As mentioned already, we need in-game hints, for example:
- NPC com chatter
- missions leading us to foreign places
- information as mission rewards
- new galnet articles
- the ability to pay informants
- ....?

Well the whole point of their game design is based on the community talking on internet media to share information. Nothing wrong with that. Is it too much to ask some one to make a cursory google search that takes all of the time it takes to type it into your phone in any case? I mean it is 2016 it is just assumed you are going to be doing something like this nowadays as it is much more common than you apparently think it is.

Why not put a browser in the game then?

This. I've missed quite a few messages because of the nature and location of the chat window.
Some kind of audible alert when a player chats would be nice

+1 OP, having to use external resources for the most basic game stuff is plain bad design.

I'm not talking about min-maxing and theorycrafting, I'm talking about doing the first engineers quest. duh
Not happy..
