I am a little bit torn apart here.
On one hand, I do understand that FD loves to have a strong and communicative community. Working together in order to find things (out), gathering data and sharing it with others is an awesome thing to have!
On the other hand, I agree with the OP. A game (any game!) shouldn'd rely on external information. There should be perfecly valid in-game ways to get access to every information you need.
I'm not saying it should be easy - not at all! I appreciate the necessity to do a propper research, hunt for treasures, fulfill long "quests".
But I need at least some "bread crumbs", hooks that give some innitial information where to start. Sheer luck of stumbling over something exciting (e.g. barnacles) isn't the solution, imo.
The initial hunt for these alien(?) structures was fine, I guess. There were galnet news about them.
However, if a new player comes to the game now, those galnet articles won't be accessible in-game any more. He doesn't even know, they ever existed!
So, how to get access to the necessary information? Maybe, this new player prefers to play in solo-mode, too, so he isn't able to ask other commanders.
As mentioned already, we need in-game hints, for example:
- NPC com chatter
- missions leading us to foreign places
- information as mission rewards
- new galnet articles
- the ability to pay informants
- ....?
