Gtx 1080 $599

I am also a bit confused, so on the 27th all those above will be available, possibly a bit cheaper elsewhere like Ebuyer/Amazon.

But when do the non-founder cards come out? Do we know what the expect price for those will be?

June 10th. Up to the AIBs to set their own price based on the MSRP of $599.

I've got a sneaking suspicion they won't stick to the msrp. After all, the AIB cards will potentially be faster, have better cooling and possibly even an extra power connector to overcome some of the overclocking problems found with the reference/founders cards.

On a sidenote, i've just seen the price of the 1070 (uk), the flipping reference card (sorry.. founders card) is £480!! I know it beats Titan x and 980ti in benchmarks, but for the second tier product that's darn pricey!

Yeah it is pricey, but it is only the introductory price, early adopters usually pay more!

I was looking for 1070 pricing (more interested in vanilla rather than Founders though). Would like to see where you found the 1070 price; was £480 a retail price including VAT ?

You're missing the tax element. Take 475 and add 20% VAT and you get 570. The $699 doesn't include tax and that varies over there from state to state. I don't think it's as high as ours anywhere though. And yes, we're still getting skimmed off the top of that but not by as much as you think.

And if you import you'll get VAT and customs charges.

No, the 20% tax fails to explain the cost different. $699 = £482 (1.45 USD to 1 GBP) + 20% tax = £578, but the cheapest retail price is £620, so where does the extra £42 go? It isn't customs charges - the UK doesn't charge duty on most electrical goods - remember these are not made in the USA, they are made in China and shipped by container to both US and UK. It's a degree of greed; the "how much can we get away with charging?" factor.

In fact, if you start with Chinese Yuan, the $699 US price would equate to 4586 Yuan, or £474 (even lower) so taking source currency as the baseline, £474 + 20% = £570. That's £49 adrift.

Either way, we're being charged at least 7% more. When you see this happen again and again, you can't help but get grumpy about it.

Well I hope so, I've just ordered a 650w psu for a 6700K 1080 build. RUns about 450-500W I think.

650W is plenty if you only want a single card... SLI may cut it fine, esp if you plan on overclocking.

$599... not a bad price but £620 (rough uk price) ...... no thanks!.

Yeah £620 is way too much for me...

One of the lads I work with is looking to get one and he'll have a 970 going spare... I'll do the big puppy eyes and see how much he wants for it.

Hey, you never know. :D

i got lucky really... I got a msi gamer factory overclocked GTX980 in blackfriday 2014 for £400..., got £90 back for selling my GTX670 and £15 for one of the free games with the card... so for £295 I got £30 credit for Warthunder and a card which keeps delivering on full bubble even 18months later.

I fully expected to have to sell it for CV1 and get a GTX1080 but my GTX980 just keeps on surprising me. Even in VR it pretty much runs everything just fine so far, so i am hoping it will last me till for another gpu generation.

when not in VR, my TV i game on is only 1080p - and it is 70inch and cost me a pretty penny so is going no where soon!!!! so anything over a GTX980 is overkill anyhow.

To be fair to my current card I bought about 3 years ago a Sapphire 7870oc it still just about manages to run my DK2 and ED is playable. although as I mentioned in another thread it's been playing up a little bit lately.

I'm assuming a 970 will run a dk2 quite nicely?

i would expect so yeah, ATW added into the launch rift runtime (1.3) has really improved performance in games because you do not notice framerate dips so much any more.

if you upgrade to a VIVE I am not so sure but even the CV1 rift i think will be mostly fine with the GTX970. They tend to overclock really well too.

if you do not manage to get your mates, keep an eye on the classifieds (sod ebay)......... i reckon the prices of 2nd hand 970s (and 980s to a lesser extent) will tank once the GTX1070 comes out.

I generally buy 2nd hand stuff from avforums.com classifieds, you need to post and be a member for a few weeks before you get access i think, but it is a fairly safe environment to buy 2nd hand esp if you buy from regulars with good rep

(i have even been given free stuff from there - MGS V the week after launch can you believe it!!!)

I am currently running triple desktop at 1080p with a GTX 970 at everything ultra, except for the 2x Supersampling because 4GB isn't enough for such large resolution (5760x1080 as 2x SS becomes 11520x2160 @ 32bits). So i'm definitely saving for a 1070 or a 1080 when they get released.

I will be waiting for the Titan varient of this GPU to come late in 2016. I will then buy 2 of these and put them straight under custom water. Funny thing is that i hardly even use my PC now, bought myself a BMW M3 convertible to play with ;-)

Using the Rift I'm really interested in a GTX 1080, basically because running the game at 2.0x super sampling in VR removes almost all of the aliasing problems apparent at 1.0x. My 980 doesn't cut it for 1.5 or 2.0 SS so I'm waiting for reports on how the 1080's fair in VR before I upgrade.

Funny thing is that i hardly even use my PC now, bought myself a BMW M3 convertible to play with ;-)

Thanks for letting us know. I hope your internet manhood is feeling a little larger now.

Air cooled? Rubbish. You need one of these babies :

Plus, what's the point of hiding your reg number when you have the same, unhidden one, two pictures along?

I'm a total dummy when it comes to buying a graphics card. Are they all pretty much the same or is there something I should look out for?

The partner cards come in 2 flavours.

1) Founders version that use the standard Nvidia blower cooler and reference clock speeds.
2) Custom version that uses much beefier cooling (multi fan + heat sinks or water cooled), extra power input and boosted core and memory clocks for increased performance.

You can of course overclock the founders card but most gamers go for the custom builds because they are designed to handle higher voltages and can be pushed harder.

You will find that most of the big players EVGA, MSi, Zotac, Gigabyte etc offer similar performance and it comes down to the one you like the look of and the price.
