I did have plans on introducing my 10yo to the game, but now, don't know how viable that will be.

Not sure "ages 10 & up" is the kind of video game is the market for Elite (thank Odin!). The average age is 35 with a lifetime of gaming experience. Plenty of Nintendo games or web based games for the kid friendly crowd. In fact, Frontier makes Kinectimals just for that kind of family friendly experience.

While I'm making sensible recommendations, probably wouldn't let my 10 yr old watch GoT either. Still an awesome series despite the high casualty rate. Much like 2.1.

Winter is Coming...

2.1 is just a light autum rain.

i have a python with an A6 shield. i got intersected by a asp intwo passes he took my shields i tried to fight but i couldnt move fast enough to get him in my sights. 2 large cannon. 1 large beam laser and 2 medium lasers. at 50 percent hull i tried to run but no luck. they gave the AI a damage buff to the point were its not fair or fun

I'm going to reply to every "AI too hard thread" with this quote from the grandfather of the space sim genre.

"Winter is coming."
So, I guess only once in this one then?

It's always a bad sign when a problem is so widespread that mods have to do damage control "uh, megathread! so we can consolidate! Not so anyone looking to buy our game see entire pages of our latest problem that will slam new players in the face with brass knuckles"!"

At least they didn't bury it deep in some subforum, that's real popular.

Alternatively, a CMDR who chooses the life of a Combat Pilot can go to specific types of areas where they can find a maxed-out A.I; rather than close of large areas of the landscape to the Generalist CMDR.

Seems to me we have 'Raid/dungeon' boss NPCs roaming outside of their Dungeons...following that analogy, Anarchy systems ought to be the 'Level-Cap Map', somewhere you only go when 'levelled'* and geared** with high Security being more akin to starter/mid level maps.

Hardcore Trader/Explorer/Combat CMDR is a niche playstyle, I'm going to hazard a guess that most players like to dabble in a bit of everything; the General population shouldn't have any of the extremes of these 'niches' thrust upon them.

* Genuinely good at Combat, not a Robigo Farmer.
** Engineered.

Come on, I've been into non hazardous Extraction sites & done perfectly fine. I've even held my own in low intensity Conflict Zones. Yes maybe they can make Dangerous & Elite NPC's a bit rarer, & yes I am all for reducing the frequency of special weapons on NPC's.....but that's about it.

Ok but usually in Elite if you want a fight you have to look for it or invite it by taking on high risk missions. If exploration or trading is more your bag then it should be straightforward enough to stay out of trouble most of the time.

I've lost 3 T7s (almost lost more) in the last few hours I've played to pirates desperate to have my precious cargo of... water purifiers. Yes, admittedly, the CG is in anarchy space. I'll try some standard trading and see how that goes.

But the real thing is, I don't want to just focus on trading or exploring. I'd like to dabble in combat every now and then. But it seems very much like I'll need to save up plenty of spare cash so that I can have some fun getting pummelled. :/

Don't forget this...

Nah, buy an eagle and go to a Hi-res. Pick lesser skilled targets until you learn the trade.

I have been told pirates will actually leave you alone if you drop some cargo.

We have Kinectimals for the old XB360. My daughter used to love it. My son saw me racing around in my SRV and immediately wanted to join in. I knew there would be a lot that would be out-of-scope for his age group, so it was always going to be a tough experience. But it's probably a little too extreme now. We'll see.

One of the problems I see is that Elite (to me, at least) has always been about accommodating a variety of playing styles. If all you're interested in is being the best combat pilot you can be, then what you say makes sense. Learn/improve/etc. But if you're a player who is only mildly interested in combat (or not at all) then you're in a lot of trouble. It's adding a very different slant to the way Elite usually works by putting increased emphasis on one particular aspect.

Saying "get good" in respect to the game in general, shouldn't have to mean "get good at combat" only.
I would say that the AI are now more worthy of respect and caution. However you don't need to be good at combat if you know the other game systems. I've not died yet in 2.1 since my first day in beta where I got toasted 3 or 4 times in quick succession while I gauged the new AI abilities.

The game has many ways to tell you that a situation is likely to be dangerous before you enter it. For example, a high rank mission is likely to be more dangerous than a low rank one, and a high security system is more likely to respond to attacks on you in time. My first 2.1 mission was very juicy (and fairly high ranked), and involved 2 master pythons coming at me in succession (I was in a python). I only survived the first with the help of security and left with 55% hull and no shields only to be chased down by the second one. I just managed to get to the station, where the defences killed the second one.

I was similarly lucky in an encounter with a deadly asp scout, which would have been little trouble previously, and escaped with 35% of my hull with help from my security friends.

There is nothing in the game to stop you getting in as much trouble as humanly possible, so you need to be aware of what you're getting into.

I am looking forward to properly testing my Xtreme Discretion Courier which is built to run, able to carry small loads (up to 12 t) at over 600 m/s with a decent jump range. I have just got my enhanced thrusters (thankfully not behind the MA paywall) so just need to try it. I fell in love with a more combat capable variant of this, with more equipment but less speed and look forward to optimising a second courier as an all rounder.

I have been optimising my asp for a good while, and would normally strip it down for exploration; I am a bit scared to do that now, so instead will explore with my 28 ly version rather than the 33 ly version!

Nope the AI threads are still popping up like mushrooms, a subforum sounds like a good idea.

Actually, I believe this is true. Although, I haven't found the right quantity yet. I tried dropping some and they demanded more. But didn't get a chance to before I was fried. Something I'll have to figure out, I guess.

My 6yr old daughter plays, in open, in her Eagle.

They closed 6 positive feedback threads for every 1 premature complaint thread. And btw, the posivity threads were all beta testers who know how this story ends. The complaints are all from people who haven't experienced engineer upgrades. Or how devastating they can be to NPCs.

In short, the AI needed this buff to still count as a "slight upgrade" over 2.0 NPCs once we all have semi-modded ships. ;)

Yeah, no kidding.
I am waiting for the "Nerf all the Engineer weapons!!!?!@q!" threads as soon as some limpet gets shot by a short range blaster beam...

From what I have heard, it seems ssomewhat dependent upon the size of the trader you're flying.
