New Version of Cmdr's Log Available!

I have a sorta bug... I was briefly using a 2 screen setup and had the Cmdr's log on it. Now.. the 2nd monitor is gone and I load up Cmdr's Log and the import... window isn't showing on my screen, I assume it's trying to display on the screen that is no longer there.

How do I reset the screen location to default?

Easiest way is to hit Windows + P keys together, then select the "Computer Only" option. This should pull everything back to your single screen.

You can also do it through your graphics driver, but removing the extra screen that isn't there anymore!

Since the data it pulls isn't for everyone (that would be a refresh hell) they have to log into YOUR data feed FROM the game... and that means they have to log in as you to the game data stream to be able to send you the data relevant to you.

Or not. I was relatively happy getting the data myself via the screenshots & EliteOCR. It's really not that much of a drama, and there's no security risk at all.

I had a similar issue, when my second monitor died. Couldn't access any trade data from within the CMDR'sLog program at all... any extra windows that wanted to open from the program would still be appearing on the second (non-existent) monitor. I fixed it by opening the Settings.txt file and manually adjusting the numbers of the windows that wouldn't display to numbers that were similar to the main window (which was displaying just fine). You'll notice there's two numbers for the pixel "co-ordinates" of the corner of each window...

eg mainTopPos = xxx
mainLeftPos = yyy

... set the co-ordinates of the top-left corner of the main window.

The numbers for the windows that aren't displaying will be quite different from the main window's numbers. Adjust as necessary, just to get it to display somewhere on the screen, then you can click and drag it as per usual.

Hope this helps.. :)

Whilst I really like this app, I have noticed that after a while the amount of old data can exceed the current data, particularly when I've been off exploring, or doing long rares runs - or just not playing the game.

Additionally, when a station stops either buying or selling a commodity, that commodity's record doesn't get deleted, leaving ghost records behind.

All of which gets a bit unhelpful after a while.

Now, I could just nuke the data-file, and start afresh, but I've also been busy typing notes against stations - e.g. so I know where to find (esp.) certain ships - so I'm not too keen on loosing everything.

So, I've knocked up a small and simple'ish application to tidy up the underlying commodity data, allowing old data to be deleted - the data retained is anywhere from 0 to 250 days old.

I've tested it myself, on win 8.1, but I'd welcome a few others giving it a go - just to make sure it's as good as it needs to be - and once all's well I'll make it generally available.

So, any brave (and vaguely tech-savvy) volunteers, please pvt message me.

...I told you it was simple...

Note: the app backs up your original file, so (for first run) it is non-destructive! Naturally enough, I'd strongly suggest you take your own backups!

Is there like an 'idiot's guide' to using this thing? I cannot figure out how to use it properly. Complete Elite newbie here also.

The data in your CMDR's LOG (let's call it CL from now) can become unhelpful in two ways.

Firstly, old data.

If you have not visited a station for a while the trade data can be too old to be relied upon. This means that CL may not give you the most profitable trade routes, and clutters up your trading window with unhelpful suggestions.

Secondly, orphan data.

When a station stops supplying or demanding a commodity, CL does not delete the relevant entry. This means that the commodity remains recorded against that station, forever, with completely misleading buy/sell information. This is orphaned data. Orphan data can mean that CL sends you to a particular station to trade in a commodity, only to find that it is no longer traded there.

TidyCmdrsLog (TCL) works non-destructively to cleanse your data, and TCL saves a full backup every time it is run, so is quite safe.

Download it today!

Let me know if you hit any problems - I can only test this so far!

Cheers!

"Low Temperature Diamond" should have an s on Diamonds

:) Gotta look through the rest

I don't know if I can make the change for you so I'm just posting here.

Aah-ha - good spot!

It's easy enough to edit the commodity_data.txt file in notepad, which is what I'm going to do!

Cheers!

nice one henry

its the apps like this that add to the elite experience in my book.

especially if one has a cockpit around them and wants another tab screen to look at,will be adding this alongside my roccat collection...time to find another old smart phone in the drawer lol

I'm a b-i-g fan of Roccat powergrid - I'm always surprised how infrequently I hear it mentioned - I much prefer it to VoiceAttack.

yes its cool stuff...just like having ones own star trek style touch screen bridge controls,i also use voice attack in conjunction with roccat.

I loved this program when I played Elite last year, then I got too busy with things and never got to play Elite.

Now I'm coming back to Elite and eventually I'm going to want to do some trading again with the Type-7 I bought near the end but never used.

Unfortunately I have some issues with this program, one of the prime ones are the lack of themes.
Since it doesn't seem ArchV1 is coming back anytime soon, I'm now writing a new version of Cmdr's Log using HTML & JS. It's going to be much the same, but allow theming thanks to css. And it's going to be avaliable for Windows and Linux and possibly Mac. (Though I can't test the last one at all)

Data is going to be stored with files like the current application, but with JSON instead of the non-standard format this application uses which might allow better interaction with other applications/migration if needed. I've been looking at smoothly importing the data from the existing files.

There is going to be a light and dark theme by default, with the ability to create custom themes by providing custom css files of course.

I'm currently laying out the interface and at the moment it looks like this with the dark theme:

Since there is no source available for the original application figuring out the trade route algorithm is going to be fun. If anyone wants to help with that or have other suggestions or requests I'd appreciate it!

I still haven't gotten very far and I hope I'm not out of line posting this here especially at this early stage, but from what I can see it seems Cmrd's log is still the only non-collaborative trading assistant for Elite and I'd like to see that option live on!

I'd also be interested in hearing what kinds of custom fields people use!

First let me say that i'm still using CL and will be pleasured to test your programm once it's done. Refering to your question above (used custom fields);

- POWER INFLUENCE
- RULING FRACTION
- ECONOMIC WEALTH
- SECTOR
- STARPORT CLASS
- SECURITY LEVEL

Brilliant! I appreciate the reply! I'm may eventually enable adding custom fields similarly to cmdr's log, but the priority is of course to get the basics to work!

Question, what is "sector" referring to? That sounds like it's something that could be potentially used in generating trade routes!

"Sector" means the area in which the system is located in, for example; SOL and EPSOLON INDY are in the CORY SYS- SECTOR, HEIKE in the HERCULIS- SECTOR, NOTI in the PUPPIS- SECTOR and so on. This way you can filter the Systems - telling the Cmdr's log to show you only the stations in one specific area... well, at least this was my intention.
