Shot dead for a 400 credit bounty?

So i'm just wondering if this is a legit game mechanic or not? because, if it is, it's kinda .
Somehow i had gotten a small 400 credit bounty, must of accidentally shot a friendly or something.

Heading back to the space station, get scanned, docking privileges revoked then i just get gang stomped by the system police.
All over a 400 credit bounty?

indeed it is the legit game mechanics at work... simple solution, don't get scanned if you are wanted or leave the system where you are wanted... I am sure if you shot a friendly you would have been 'informed' on screen (as is the case with all bounties) and you would have had a red 'wanted' warning label attached to your hud just above your fuel indicator

Fly Safe Commander...

I lost a lot of sideys to this. There was a bug in 1.2 that you could sometimes get wanted for shooting wanted criminals... It sucked.

After this new update you get shot dead whether you have a bounty or not! :D

On a serious note quick tip. If you have a bounty on you in a system then find an outpost to land on to pay it off. You won't be scanned there.

400 cr bounties only last 10 minutes. You also have to leave the system to clear the bounty.

Yeah, when something like this happens, I just jump to supercruise and watch the space drift by until the counter ticks down, jump to another system, and then jump back again to pay off the fine.

It's rare enough as I'm careful enough that it hasn't happened more than a handful of times to me.

...

Also, I don't know what the lore is exactly on this, as it seems to change back and forth as it feels like, but the insurance rebuy is far from death.

Some of us actually do want a hardcore/ironman mode. ;)

We can thank the griefers during initial testing days for this. They'd sit outside a station and shoot players without being tagged for a bounty. Bounty system went in to try and modify that behaviour. Now everyone who gets anything on their head can get wasted.

Watch your HUD, and check your fire.

CMDR, just wait for the timer to count down to zero, then jump away to another system and then jump back as others have mentioned.

Alternatively, use an outpost to dock at, most of the time you wont get scanned as there is a lack of law enforcement around these (usually)

Just part of learning the game, dont get out off its all part of learning the game.

Your mistake was not leaving the system to clear the bounty before returning to the station. If you are tagged as 'Wanted' then you are a legitimate target. It doesn't matter how trivial the offense is. In the year 3302 justice is deaf, dumb and blind. No mercy.

Oh, also, it should probably be mentioned that if you're playing with some friends and you guys don't want to worry about this happening, you can disable "report crimes against me" in the options on the right control panel.

I haven't been playing long but I have come across my fair share of small bounties against me.

I fly with turreted weapons, and before them gimbled and I have set my ship up so I can fire constantly. Because of this occasionally the feds will get between me and my target and... They do nothing. I have watched their Shields light up but, I believe, because they weren't targeted they are OK about it as they were glancing shots, not sustained fire.

The only times I have had a bounty on my head were due to lack of patience and not paying attention. The first was not waiting for a scan to run fully before I engaged a wanted target (it was obvious it was wanted as it was being engaged by the feds and firing back). The second was where I was attempting to target a wanted ship I had previously scanned but somehow I manged to target a none wanted target and I opened fire. My turrets had almost dropped his Shields before I realised.

Anyway, as others have said, avaiding in these situations is easy. It's a short time limit on the bounty usually, I have seen 8 minutes, but someone up there said 10 so it could be that and I was just not looking in time.

Avaiding is simple, as soon as the bounty prompt pops up you will notice it says 'wanted' in the bottom right. In these situations throttle to the blue 'handling' zone and turn away from the feds, if you are in a mass locked area (like a ring) point away from the rocks and out of the ring at the same time. Now hit the afterburner and firewall the throttle.

While I am turning and burning I retract my hard points and max out my engines, then I take the last remaining pips out of weapons and put them on shields. You aren't doing anymore fighting now, so there is no point wasting the pips or slowing down your exit. Depending how it's going you may wish to move power to the Shields over the engines, but you must keep some power going to the engines so you can keep bursting and keep your acceleration up. If you are in an asteroid cluster use them to give you cover, put them between you and the feds, but keep your speed up and maybe through in a sliding corkscrew manoeuvre to make it difficult for the weapons to lock on.

Once cleared of mass lock jump to lightspeed as quickly as possible, it doesn't matter where you are going. You may wish to unlock a location target before you clear mass lock just in case it wants you to align with it.

Once you are out of danger bring up your galaxy map and target a station in another system, orientate and then jump. Once at the other station dock and redeem any bounty (etc.) you can, just in case. Then wait the timer to run out (listed on the left panel under transactions I believe), and then jump back into the previous system and head straight for an outpost. I went to a station in the previous patch and wasn't shot, but outposts are less picky so maybe don't risk it.

Now dock, pay your fine and you are good to go again. Maybe check if you can claim any more bounties (etc.) and then move on.

The getting blown up for 400 credits is a sickner but a great learning experience I only did it once :)

I might be kidding myself but turrets seems to target better now. The problem is pre 2.1 in a high intensity res I was lucky to see any cops. Usually 2 and they would be mid ranked eagles, now its 8 on average with at least two Anacondas every res I hit.

It seems pretty obvious FD thought AI, harder mid level guys will be put off so lets max out the help. Trouble is there is that much fire power you do well to target anything worth hitting before it gets blown up by the men in green.

So now clipping one is a near certainty then try getting away with 8 angry men on your tail when the world turns red. I now have three systems within 20Ly that I jump between to let the wanted timer count down. I'm out now for a breather cos I just picked up a five day fine and have no idea what I hit. So off to pastures new, its only a game :)

This game is when it comes to ethics.......So hopelessly politically naïve.....
.
Slave trading? That's fine, you can make millions and become a Baron..........Scratch someone's paint work or don't park your ship quick enough, and it is state sanctioned murder......In EVERY station, Fed, Alliance, Empire......
.
This galaxy just makes no sense at all......it would be a horrible place to exist and as such is a pretty ugly social environment in which to use "Imagination" (TM)....Want to do some quiet mining? Can't, there is a murderer behind every rock.......want to do some quiet trading? too bad, muggers are everywhere, even in the "safe" systems and even when you don't have ANY CARGO!!!......want to explore? hope you don't loose 6 months of data and 100s of millions in credits, when some Reever kills you on your return trip, with him facing a small fine................the game is so illogical it just shouts VIDEO GAME from the 80s, every chance it gets......no way this would even count as "society", it is more like Mad Max......socially inept.....and why do Empire, Feds, and Alliance all have exactly the same fines system?......Because this is a very basic video game with decades old mechanics and naïve and illogical social constructs.

hmmm yes yes yes you could do so much better I am sure...

But wait... this is the continuation of a game franchise that was started in the 80's... hmmm.... Yup you go make a multiplayer space game engine that renders the criticisms you lay at the feet of frontier null and void and then do a kickstarter to turn that engine into a game, I am certain you will be a millionaire, surely you are onto something and must have the abilities to produce something so superior to what we have here in ED right...

I make motorsport simulators for a living. I have been in, through and beyond the games industry in the past 20 years...I even put BAFTA on my CV because of it............I wouldn't want the pay cut going back in to the games industry....it is hard hard work.....at crunch time you can end up sleeping on the floor, dreaming when you blink and surviving on pizza and curry delivered to the office......the art/sound team have done an outstanding job on Elite D.....I wish they had a bigger budget and more staff.......but the game "Design"......jeeze.......where is it? could I do better?......well I dunno, I would certainly plan something that is "logical" to the human condition............the thought has occurred to use Unity or other to produce a title.....but, I don't need the money and it is all consuming work....and I love my current job......maybe for fun when I retire......
.
I will come on here and have a moan about a game I was looking forward to playing though, just like everyone else...... :) Though, when I speak about game development, I can speak from experience..(I'm an art director now).....I bet you have played on quite a few games I worked on..... :) Maybe even the one that has BAFTA next to its name ;)

All over a 400 credit bounty?

It's a legit game mechanic.
I think it should be changed.
A bounty of 400 cr gives the message that what you did was not that bad... it was a mistake really.
And at the same time the game tries to kill you for it.

I think either the bounty should be much higher to reflect that it is a crime punishable by death, or the bounty should be turned into a fine.
It is true however that these low bounties are removed once you jump out of the system.

But getting scanned and killed at the station is a situation that is generally easy to avoid.
I enter stations all the time when I am wanted. I never get caught:

Line up with the entrance at a distance of approx. 7 km.
Ask docking permission.
Observe the position of the authority vessels. Make sure there's no one hanging around in front of the entrance.
And then boost towards the entrance. (Don't boost when you are near the entrance though :))
You can lower your gear to assist in breaking.
It is a piece of cake really.

Few days ago I got trigger happy late at night - drink might have been taken - and murdered an innocent NPC...got 4600 cr bounty on me, no problem, but this bounty being active for FOUR DAYS in the system I call home was unacceptable.
So I jumped back in, got 15km away from the station letterbox, and started boosting. Went through the slot at just under 300 (station hasn't time to scan you at that speed), landed, bought a sidey, went outside and spun around near the slot til the cops scanned and subsequently buried me :D
Debt paid, back home, back in my Scout. Was worth the risk for the saving on the rebuy.
Have also been given the 400cr/7 mins when some dumb NPC flew across my lasers as I was wrecking a wanted. Jumped, waited, went back, paid.

Hehe. Wasn´t it fun :D Although when the bounties are so low maybe the police should ask if you want to pay of that bounty of instead of "murdering" you. It makes no sense to kill someone for a 400 cr bounty because of a strafe shot/pot shot. What makes sense is to ask if the scanned one wants to pay it of, if not, he will be attacked.

If the player who got scanned murdered another clean target then the police response should be deadly. Not if its just because of a pot shot :p
Instead the police should open a coms channel to you and ask a question.
1. If you want to pay of the small bounty of 400cr?
2. Request that you stand still because of a in depth kill warrant scan.
3. Wish you a further happy day in the void.

With this method accidentaly pot shots wont get you killed anymore and RES farming can be more stable/enjoying.
