How long would it take to....

Travel into and through every one of the 400 billion start systems in a Sidewinder at maximum supercruise speed assuming I took the shortest possible distance? Am talking real time.

There seem to a lot of smart folks on this forum, and while I'm certain that "more information" is required to offer a precise answer, I was wondering if a ballpark estimate is possible?

Trying to get a sense of "scale" beyond a count of "bodies". Figured time spent flying in a Sidewinder would be another way to get a sense of scale.

Any takers?

It really depends tremendously on which bodies are reachable from which others.

If some have to be revisited in order to get to different journey forks that are otherwise impossible to reach, it will mean a long, long, long time.

I read one estimate if you visit one star every second for 12,000 years without a break you may get close. That estimate could be on the low side, but gives a general idea. No matter how many play the game there will always be places never seen.

As far as i am aware it is impossible to super cruise between stars in the current game. Super cruising is for in-system travel with a top speed of 2000c (two thousand times the speed of light) .

The distance between our sun and the nearest other star is around 4.3 lightyears, and the average distance between stars in the milky way is guessed at around 5 lightyears.

Traveling at 2000c (not including the time it takes to accelerate and decelerate in super cruise) it would take around 20 hours to reach another star. So that would take around 900,000,000 years, assuming you had a perfect route.

Hyperspace on the other hand, is a lot faster. I would hazard a guess that it takes around 30 seconds to go through the sequence of hyper jumping to another system (as it currently stands in alpha 4).

So two jumps a minute for two hundred billion minutes would take around 380,000 years.

That doesn't take into account the hyperspace charging delay, or the soon to be added fuel mechanics, which would require several extra minutes of gathering per jump.

On a distance of 500 years light... for the whole galaxy... --- Below is in French. Left: the time required to reach Kepler. Center: the probe, Right: the speed of movement of the probe -- Of course, it is not a supercruise speed

Try the program Space Engine, i just set my speed to 4 AU/s (~2000c) and oh my god is it slow, reaching another star is going to take a while using only that ;)

With 400,000,000,000 systems and you want to calculate the fastest journey, it would take longer to calculate the trip than to fly it

I believe Commander Splendour has posted in the alpha forum that he is attempting to make a 4ly interstellar crossing using super-cruise at present. Wish him well! :)

It would only be a mindbogglingly incomprehensible number. Not useful AT ALL for getting a sense of scale I'm afraid.

Edit: Going from one edge of the galaxy to the other through the middle (100,000 ly) at 2000c would take 50 years.

Maybe you could send your question here ->

He likes talking about incredibly large numbers and our galaxy ;)

I think you can supercruise between stars seamlessly. Someone in alpha is trying it at the moment and has covered 1.25ly out of 4.5ly, going at 2500c. In a rickety sidewinder :p

I'm curious to see how long it will take the first person to reach the center of our galaxy from launch. Even with focused jumping and fuel scooping it'll probably take weeks.

A rough guess based on Galactic core being ~ 27000 ly away, assuming a 5 ly jump and 10 minutes to refuel, it would take 900 hours or 37.5 days of constant playing.

I managed to go 0.14 ly between two stars in the same system in just over an hour, topping out at 2070 c in kind of autopilot. So it would probably take about 30 hours

EDIT, I didn't consider all the time taken to get up to speed, probably it would be considerably shorter! More like 16 hr

Thanks for the replies folks. I guess I won't be able to knock out the entire "map" in a couple of weekends, then. :)

I was wondering if this has happened by now or if someone else has tried this. I'm very interested in knowing if it's possible to super-cruise between stars.

It has been done at least once, and took 12+ hours to complete the trip.

BUT, the game doesn't populate the destination star with planets until you have done a hyperspace jump. It has also been said that you will not be able to travel between stars using supercruise because you will not have enough fuel to complete the journey.

It is possible to do it Alpha 4 because there is no fuel mechanic enabled at the moment.
