So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

Dude ... Have a Snickers or something. We may not like not having the Tionisla Orbital Graveyard in the game, but there are plenty of good reasons why it's not there - yet. For one thing, Frontier had to work on the whole game. Something as big as the T.O.G. (even if it's technically canon by virtue of being mentioned in Reclamation) would likely require a custom set of code just to make. It's a lot bigger than Voyager, and the flak they would catch for "getting it wrong" would be far more than for just not putting it in until they can get it right on the first try.

You know her name. I know her name. Just about everyone who read the Oolite novellas knows her name. Drew had his reasons for not naming her, just like how the old woman never names who it is she lost. She's in Reclamation to drive part of the plot and reveal the existence of a mystery, and as a nod to the Oolite fandom. She is not there to make the Oolite universe canon. So call her Rebecca Weston/Tyley if you want, but officially she's just a crazy old woman with conspiracy theories dancing in her head.

Oh, and she would probably hate being called "Old Woman" for the same reason I would hate being called "Old Man." Because nobody likes being old, or having that fact pointed out to them. So yeah, have a snack or something. There's nothing sexist about the matter other than what we choose to project into it.

It's all tongue in cheek,,,

however with this,,

"There's nothing [...] about the matter other that what we ... project into it",,,

You've [possibly accidentally?] deconstructed political correctness...

Please remain calm and stay where you are, some one will be along to assist you shortly.

So is it really worth the time chasing around the bubble to satisfy the engineers for mods or just ignore them and head back to the Rift?

Summary of some of the relevant points for the Rift mystery from Drew's AMA so far (full link here)

Great summary clavian. I'll update the OPs with the new information a little later :D

I'm having a jolly little time pootling around H&S nebulas right now, honking at shiny things and letting all the information percolate. :)

I'll get around to the Engineers when its convenient for me. I play in open so I have no desire to deal with the congested systems full of Commanders queuing up to take their turns shooting at me. I'm out in the Western Alpha Neutron Field scanning Neutrons and Black Holes in hopes of raising the capitol to purchase an exploraconda. I plan to stay out here as long as I can ... which won't be very long if I keep face-planting into Neutron Stars. Hull is down to 87%.

I do, BTW, love the new animations for Neutrons and BHs:

I plan on sticking to the Bubble for the time being. I went and reset my save file a couple of weeks ago and am currently in a Cobra Mk.III, playing with the new mission contacts until I earn enough to get back into a Diamondback Explorer. Then, when I hit 3 weeks loyal to Li Yong-Rui I'm going to earn myself a pair of Packhound launchers. By that time I'll probably be just about ready to venture out into the Black once again.

Ah! A fellow resetter! Going Iron Man mode?

It feels weird, I played normally for a good seven months. I keep        g out when I log in, looking for my old Python or Asp. I decided to use modified Iron Man rules this time, based on a forum post I'd read months ago. Here is the rule set I'm working on.

I plan on revising the government table once I get a clear picture of how security levels correlate to government type, but it may be simpler to keep it based on ethos and to add a security table for modifiers instead.

Nice! I've actually read your rule set before. Frontier should implement it!

Adding on to Clavains excellent recap...With regards to having your ship prepared for combat in the Rift, Drew also touches upon permit locked regions, in Barnards Loop amd elsewhere, stating that they would be locked for a reason, and that the Pilots Federation would have closed them for the safety of Commanders. Maybe worth visiting a few such areas if people are on the hunt for anything out of the ordinary...

i covered about 9k ly in the rift and outer arm since the patch and did not find any permit locked area.

that 7 layers thing and kgbfoam is spooking in my head since a couple of days. it must be an important clue. it just has to be...

The mythology of Salome and the Seven Veils is relevant

I'm getting a headache here.... I think i visited every neutron star between the heisenberg crossing and the rr line and the 10k line and found nothing. so i assume its not the kgbfoam thing but what else can be described as 7 layers or veils that we can remove in the galaxymap? is there maybe a tiny nebula that we did not discover yet?

The Dark Wheel - what are they up to? ...

As I'm Allied to the Dark Wheel, after 2.1 went live I've been looking at doing more missions for them.

So I went to one of the Dark Wheel controlled planetary bases - specifically Neumann Camp - and found some interesting things there...

1) Neuman Camp appears to be some sort of observatory of some kind

The appearance of this base struck me as odd.

There are two of these buildings - same design - and both have what I can only describe as a telescope of some kind - radio? Optical? Both? Or is it a transmitter? Who knows...

Also, on the above screenshot - have a look at the roof - there is a logo there - more on that later.

2) One of these "telescopes" is aiming at a specific area...

FUMaL72.png

I thought that was interesting. I wondered if that was just some accident of the planet's rotation, so I investigated which area of the sky this thing is aimed at...

It appears to be aiming towards a permit locked area of space known as Col 70 Sector.

I couldn't get an exact marker due to time constraints, but the following two screenshots give a good indication...

RrvoPXm.png

This is interesting in and of itself.

I hear your skeptical question : "But Genar, this could just be a coincidence!" - I hear you, fellow skeptic! All I can say is, I logged off of the game for a few hours as I had to go out and do stuff in real life. When I came back on the game, the "telescope" was still aimed at the same area of space - so maybe the planet this base is on doesn't move or rotate? :) Who knows...

The other "telescope" is aimed at the same angle, but in a 180 degree opposite direction, into the galaxy. I did not have the time to see if I could figure out the line it flows through.

3) The logo on top of the two "observatory buildings"...

Here is the logo in question...

fjDXxm0.png

I am unsure if it has any significance whatsoever - or whether this is a breadcrumb trail deliberately dropped by FDEV and whomever is helping to write the ongoing storyline. All I know is that 1) This is a cool logo and 2) I wonder if there might be some information encoded within said logo - that is not my forte so I'll leave that as an exercise for others to ponder over and possibly decode if there is information in there to be gleaned.

And that's all I have for now. I will continue following the Dark Wheel trail. Thank you for reading :)

Awesome detective work :)

That logo, discounting the large star...there's 7 of them. Seven sisters?

Edit: And the telescope...maybe a transmitter/receiver?

Whoop whoop! CQC asset in main game usage detected!

(This is one end of the Cluster Compound main structure, IIRC)

AR-9 - Alien Research?

What were the missions leading you there, if I may ask, G-H?

There wasn't a mission leading me to that base - I just decided on a whim to go down there looking for missions - then I did a double-take - then I did a bit of poking around :)

AR might also stand for Astronomical Research - who knows.... ;)

Nice work! First thing that jumps to mind is the logo, which, not counting the main star of the logo itself, seems to have seven star-like shapes in it. Seven Sisters? Probably reading too much into it, and why eight planet-like shapes if the seven are significant? Ninja'd.

Col 70 is one of the permit-locked sectors in 2.1 near Barnard's Loop I believe.
