Engineers Limpets expiration

Hi!

we have now to collect the mats for engineers.
Why do the limpets somtimes collect all the cargo and sometimes collect one piece and expire?
I have no mining experience at all.

I have installed a 3A limpet collector, and every time i use one to catch a material in space the limpet expire when it brought it back to my ship, which means, 1 limpet = 1 material.
3A limpet must last 720 sec according to the description

They also expire if they faceplant into the asteroids. The latest patch seems to encourage them to do that, from my anecdotal observation.

Prospectors always expire when you launch a new prospector.

If you program a limpet with a material/fragment targeted, it will expire when it captures and delivers the item. To collect multiple items floating in space, do not have anything targeted when you program/launch the limpet. Then it will grab whatever is there and keep grabbing until the timer expires nromally.

OK thanks, i will try this and report back.

This, if you don't target the item it will just collect everything, if you do target the item it will expire. This is a feature, not a bug btw.

And dont forget to check cargo space after collection done, illicit cargo may hav there :) Got fined by police who responded to distress call and scanned me while i salvaged site.

In the past, there were missions to retrieve stolen things, but now all the stolen stuff I find I get fined for it and not a small fine either - sometimes 8-10K. Also, the limpets don't work well in the planets gravity well. If you are in a USS and it is close to a planet, the gravity well captures the stuff and the limpets can't lock on due to the constant pull on the planet, which is natural, of course.

Many of you probably don't remember how crappy American cars were back in the 1980's. The reason was linked to the auto industry's need to keep mechanics working. I suspect some programmer has the idea that if he writes bad code, or changes the game to increase our frustration, that he/she guarantees him/herself a job down the line writing code to fix this stuff.

Maybe this is a conspiracy theory, but millions of Americans switched to foreign cars with better mechanical records. Guess what? It led the Big 3 Car makers to eventual bankruptcy and the US Government had to bail them out.

Something to chew on.

Target Item + Fire Limpet = that target item is collected, then limpet is destroyed.

No Target + Fire Limptet = everything is collected until the limpet timer expires. When there is nothing left to collect they just follow your ship around until more items to collect come within range.

Those limpets are as dumb as... i mean come on suicidal limpets made out of paper? REALLY? Can't we get some MK2 limpets that don't expire but just go refuel inside your ship? They could have robotic arms and place for 10 pieces of asteroid and could require better controllers like size 3 for 1 mk2 limpet and size 5 for 2 mk2 limpets. Everyone wins!

Just make sure you don't send it to collect if you are low on fuel because it will eat 0.5t of it for each launch!

0.5t for each launch? Are you insane? I'll stick to ones that expire after 6 minutes thanks. Also how are they suicidal? If you managed to look slightly above your post, I explained their behaviour.
