Two VERY Basic Questions...

Sorry for the basic nature - but I'm just practicing a little exploration ahead of the CNE! Its all new to me...though as a keen amateur asronomer Im looking forward to visiting some sites I've seen in my Scope...(200mm Dob Reflector)
I'm especially keen on Planetaries...Carbon Stars and Supernova remnants..

Anyway...two things I discovered I didn't know last night...

1. After I have scanned a system with my ADD and gone to the System Map to identify any intereting objects...how do I select them as destinations from the System Map...it comes up with a red unselectable "route unavailable"

2. Where do I find my exploration data while I'm in space...I can't see a tab/log anywhere on the HUD...

1) The route finder doesn't work within the system - it's for choosing a specific destination in ANOTHER system. Confusing until you know that! To select an object, go the the navigation screen and select it there.

2) Exploration data is available on a system by system basis, available via either the system screen or the Galactic map. BUT, because the Galactic map isn't updated until you register the data you have (by selling it to Universal Cartographics in a station), you won't be able to see the data you have collected on the trip you are currently on.

1. Go to the first option for select rather than plot route, you can't plot a route to the system you're already in
2. You can't. Keep your own records if you want them :/

Left click on the first icon on the bar - the route planning one does work IIRR, but only for planets in systems outside the one you're in... :)

2. Where do I find my exploration data while I'm in space...I can't see a tab/log anywhere on the HUD...

There's no way to do it, unfortunately. In the statistics panel you can get some basic details on how far you've travelled, how many scans you've made &c. but there's no way to keep track on what you've visited unless you log it manually or use a companion program.

In a 3rd party app...

I prefer EDDiscovery, it is currently better for seeing your travels as a map across the galaxy.

You could also try Captain's Log which is better for recording the details of what bodies you found and estimating your potential profit.

I believe you can run both concurrently.

Looks like I couldn't find out how to do it because in-system route plotting isn't available :)
I was going to give one of the third party programs like EDDiscovery/Captains Log a whirl anyway...but surprised that theirs not an in-game function for it!

However, if you are planning on going to a specific location within a system other than you are in (and you have that system data), you can select that system in Galaxy Map, call up its System Map, click on your destination, Plot it, and then your route will not only take you to that system, but to the place chosen within that system.

No I realise that...its the same as plotting a course to a particular station from your current system...
I just wondered if I could scan a system with my ADD, open the system map, see a shiny blue pebble (for example) then plot a route automatically in the same way to it so I can run a detailed surface scan...
I guess I have to look at the system map, ID targets then either find them visually in the orbital plane or select the Unexplored tags in the Main Nav Panel...

Just remember that the nearest on the system map does not always correspond to the nearest on the nav pane. It depends entirely where you are in relation to everything else. (if you've already worked this out... apologies, but I thought it worth mentioning :) )

You can do this.

When you have that shiny blue pebble highlighted you see a series of buttons. There's the zig-zag "plot route" button, which will not work because it can only be used for objects in a different system than the one you are currently in, and there's an inverted triangle "target this" button. Click that. It is now your target and when you leave the system map just point your nose at the target and go.

I didn't see this mentioned, but in the system map, when you select a planet or moon that you've scanned, on the second tab of data is the result of your planetary scan. This will show the type of planet, size, orbital period, temperature, atmospheric pressure, ring details, rotation, etc. However, if you don't have a detailed surface scanner, you won't get all the info. It's kind of a pain to get to, but those details allow me to really picture the planets I can't yet land on.

Also, check out the "planetary sounds" thread, as listening to the planets in the system map (even when you haven't scanned them) can give you details about the type of world, if you've got a good ear.
