T5 increased FSD range now gives +17-45% optimised mass

Very useful thread, thanks all!

Personally I think 45% is almost too much, particularly considering the benefit is disproportionate. i.e. 45% increased jump range doesn't just mean you get there 45% faster. It means you can reach systems that previously were impossible to reach. It means shorter routes open up because of the ability to reach new 'intermediary' points along the way, so fewer jumps. It means increased fuel efficiency, so less time scooping.

That said, they better not touch it until I get it on my Asp! I'm making a beeline (well, around the spiral arm) back to get it upgraded. Great to hear exploration data counts towards reputation with some Engineers, it's just about the only thing I have. (fingers crossed interdictors stay away).

It's not +45% jump range specifically, it's +45% optimal mass... although if the mass parameter is linear in the actual jump distance equation then that's practically the same :p

I agree with this one. I think that making explorer ships to have no problem in 99% of galaxy is not good. Also this opens up almost every ship in the game to be an exploration ship. Even Orca has possibility to make it over 30ly.. I would've been much happier to say 10 - 20% increase.

Lets keep in mind that the FSD-Range-increase may very soon be mitigated by the need to take along big shields and guns and maybe even heavy hull and reinforcements. There have been strong hints about that in the launch-lifestream and the AMA with Drew Wagar. It seems that the days of flying unarmed and unshielded in a paper-thin ship with the lightest thrusters available could come to an end.

What Eisen said and then some more. I've already upgraded to bigger power plant and thrusters on my explorer, and depending on how well I roll with the FSD upgrade (assuming my ticket gets processed and I get materials refunded due to last nights server errors) I may consider adding some military grade plating too. I already carried basic weaponry since Horizons 2.0 so that's already covered.

Up to now the meanest thing I encountered more than 4 kly out was my own fatigue and inattentiveness. I never met other ships or the like apart from intended meetings during Distant Worlds.
That may change soon but up to now it was: why punish yourself with a bad jumprange if there is no one lurking in the dark? That's not madness, it's pragmatism.:D

Yeah, going forward I will be exploring with a minimum of A rated shields and at least a few weapons, plus chaff and maybe even point defense. The devs have given us plenty of warnings that space will be getting dangerous very soon, now that we have increased jump ranges it's time to start flying prepared IMHO. With lightweight mods we should still be able to gain a lot of range over what we had pre 2.1.

I have yet to make even a single module craft though, been too busy doing other things in 2.1. :D
