Excuse the pun but the EVGA 1080 has made me take a 180 on my opinion of the Vive and ED

I just upgraded my crossfire R9 290 system with a single Nvidia EVGA 1080 card. Whereas before I had to set the game to crippled graphically through things like sampling below 1.0. Now with the 1080 and 1.5 sampling the game is AMAZINGINGLY detailed...bluriness is gone...text is clear (I admittedly do use a custom HUD colour of green) and cockpit and exterior graphics are crisp and high res like I pictured they would be.

I know you can make a successful argument that you shouldn't have to upgrade to that kind of a card to see a difference. My opinion is that my R9 290 which met THEIR specs should be delivering clear graphics even with eye candy turned down...it didn't. So i suppose like some past games that looked increasingly worse depending on gfx options, settings and resolution Elite looks better when configured to look better. I also agree that the ED experience is VERY fps specific...ie the higher your FPS (locked at 90) the better.

Simply put i can't now put the game down whereas last week i had to not play it cause it looked like someone vomited pea soup on my monitor. Now it's clear, crisp and gorgeous and I CANT stop playing!

That's awesome, glad the extra horsepower of the 1080 pushed through the pea-soup barrier! :D

Quite a few folks are interested in seeing how the GTX 1080 performs - can you give some of your settings details and frame rates?

In space? near a planet, in Coriolis station, on the ground in the SRV etc.

Repped.

Even with a 5930k, 32GB of DDR4 Ram, and a damn Titan X, mine looks pretty messy. Playable? Yes, but if the 1080 offers that big of a leap from what I am now playing, it is worth the buy. Thanks for the update, as many of us were wondering if the hype was real for ED and the Vive.

Nice one!! I was curious what the 1080 would do to the VR experience, is there anyway you can post a screen grab of your VR view ?

PS: Whats the texture loading like on approach to planets?

I am looking at building a custom rig to replace my ageing HP Pavilion Dv6 Laptop which struggles to hit 25fps on medium/low settings.
Am going whole hog on the new rig, (MSI X99 godlike MOBO, dual msi gtx 1080 seahawk in SLI, 128 GB Dominator DDR4 etc) so am glad to hear that the 1080 is living up to expectations.

could you post a video (with frame rates) in non Vr flight, approaching planets/stations etc?

Got my 1080 yesterday - went from 2x280x crossfire, when crossfire worked mainly in bf4 it was good delivering 120+ fps with ultra no AA or anything like that at 1080p. The 1080 is in a whole different league, now bf4 is on ultra with 8xAA and everything else maxed with 200% resolution scale @ 140-170 fps - its like a whole new game. Doom runs ultra/nightmare @ 175fps and this card even tho its the refrence model doesn't even break a sweat! The fps is constant - it doesnt dip or stutter and is amazingly quiet!!! Waiting for my rift now so i can start playing elite again, something ive not been able to do since i sold my dk2. If any of you were on the line about upgrading to the 1080, do it, trust me you wont regret it. And heres another thing, this card is built around VR, its actual performance in VR beats the titan x by 2.5 times - something that will only get better as they develop drivers. :) best card ive ever had - well exceeded expectations. Gamer / custom rig builder 20+ yrs.

Yeh ive been keeping an eye on that thread since it started, its only effecting a few cards so far and im glad to say mine has no issues, i suspect it something to do with drivers and bad installs.

On a different note:

Anyone waiting to see what AMD has to offer :) your gonna love this...
IT TAKES 2 OF AMD'S NEW 480X's to beat a single 1080! by 3 ( THREE ) fps!! With that comes extra heat, micro stutter, extra power + alot more noise.

RIP AMD

£635 for my founders edition. Uk markets always been bloated. If you wait a few week other manufacturers cards will be out priced between £500 - 700 .. lost all faith in factory overclocked unstable cards tho after the last 3 ive had so i decided to go refrence card with exhaust blower this time, ive found them to be the most reliable + stable cards over the years ^_^

I think that ED doesn't take advantage of SLI (yet, unsure of timeframe if at all). For ED at least, one GTX 1080 will sit idle.

Although, I have seen some conflicting posts on this forum as to whether SLI actually works in ED.

same price as here. Why is it that it's priced like 599 Dollar in the US? At least this was the price they announced it.

Founders editions had a $100USD premium on the price - they were listed at $699USD.

I've seen 1100 - 1249AUD here in Australia; everything is sold out (Founder's Editions), with OEM cards coming soon. Even a water cooled MSI version from Corsair. So even with the falling Aussie dollar conversion against the USD, Au is still paying a hefty margin.

Hopefully the OEM cards will arrive soon, with higher clock speeds, better availability and better cooling. And better prices.

I've just upgraded from a GTX 970 to a 1080, and while the Vive experience is much much better, it's not quite as good as I'd hoped. With VR High settings, its still dropping below 90fps on planet surfaces and in stations.

Could the problem be the aging PC I've plugged the 1080 into (i5-3570K @ 3.4 GHz, with 16GB DDR3 1600 Mhz)?

Would a new mobo, chip and ram make the difference?

I'm running the same setup with a 980 and I expect we both experience near identical issues. The major things that cause performance hits are shadows and supersampling. At this point Frontier needs to fix the game, especially if you can't get any more out of it visually on our end.

Would be great if Frontier would get a complete Vive update/fix out in the next few weeks.

Well, I hope you're right.

I've got an I7 6700K and GTX 1080 due to arrive Saturday. It's all water cooled so will probably take me most of the weekend to get it plumbed to the existing cooling system. It's a huge upgrade for me, so I'm really hoping for big things!

Sounds plausible to me. Your CPU is just below the official VR requirement from Valve/Oculus, a 4590.

There is a weird lack of optimization on FD's part that's causing the stuttering. I've closed all unnecessary processes in the background, and even on VR low, there are still noticeable hiccups when facing the center of the galaxy, or browsing starport services. My performance is identical on Ultra settings (with a few things like ambient occlusion turned off). Certain actions will always ensure the framerate drops to 45fps, which is the cause for all the stuttering.

I think suggesting an upgrade to a brand new graphics card is bad advice. The problem is optimization, not hardware.
