Well you guys did it. The NPCs are EASYMODE again, I can kill Elite/Deadly FAS, Pythons, and Anacondas in my little stock Viper 3 without even scratching the paint. Even with D rated shields. Hope you're happy.

Actually, ED did it, the purpose of a business is profit, especially as the team need to be paid for their work, if too many of your customers are not satisfied, that's going to reduce profits.

But at least the AI is still beautifully realistic. On Elites, it almost feels like I am fighting vs a real player. And even Harmless NPCs feel like they are humans too, just ones that make a LOT of mistakes, and are made out of exploding paper.

This will get sorted, I am sure of it. I strongly suspect that what we got over the weekend was not what FD intended but good strong AI in the higher ranks is.

The reaction from FD yesterday strikes me as a "yikes! better pull that and re-do it carefully". I haven't tried any combat since 2.1 live so didn't vote and can't compare but given we have not had a patch update to the clients, I'm guessing we still have the beta 6 AI. At the very least, we are not worse off than we were in 2.0 and we have a clear intention from FD to improve the AI challenge where appropriate.

It´s not so bad.

I guess people at both ends are "not satisfied." And I get that we have to share the game, because I want us to be a whole community, especially with Thargoids knocking at our door. But if they gut the training ground for the warriors, how will we be ready for "Winter"?

(caveat, I still absolutely LOVE the AI, Frontier, please don't touch this work of Art, not even a hair). Please balance anything that needs balancing by only dealing with the NPC stats and bugs.

Probably more of an autumn frost... [downcast]

I stand with both, I'm a casual player who supports hardcore, because everyone should be able to enjoy their game their way, obviously this is difficult for open play, but they should have a slider for solo and private.

I need confirmation that not only the engineer modules but the AI scripts have been changed / downgraded for higher ranked NPC. It would be very sad as the challenge was my reason to start playing again.

As the game is now, that would only make sense if characters were locked off into those specific modes and didn't affect the same BGS. So, thankfully not something that is likely to ever happen. (I play in solo a lot for the Alt+F10 screenshots and for some networking reasons.)

As every player experiences and affects the same shared galaxy state, introducing a user-selectable difficulty setting in any mode would give players who chose an difficulty easier setting a distinct advantage over others who did not.

None of the previous games had a user-selectable difficulty setting

I confess I'm a little puzzled by this attitude. I mean, if you really like hard, challenging combat that much why not just play open. Isn't that what Open is about? Or better yet, do a Mobius in reverse and start a Combat group. Nothing is harder to fight than another human, true?

Solo was never supposed to be the easy mode, and neither was open supposed to be the hard mode.
It was because the AI was crap, but as far as I can tell, it was not FD's goal to have solo being easier.

If it where to be that solo is supposed to be easier, then rewards should be blanced to reflect that.

Also there are several ways of selecting the difficulty :

  • Harmless to elite NPC's.
  • Low, Med, High, Hazardous RES.
  • Level 0 to level 4 threat level in USS.
  • Anarchy, Low security, Medium security, High security level.
  • Mission selection ("enemies might hunt you down")

So really, there are many ways to keep things safe and easy in ED.

You mean like low, medium and high?
Already in there. So what exactly are they supposed to add? Entry level.hazardous res? Because low res does not have that elitist connotation?
Not gonna repeat the "how to completely avoid combat" (comes in 5 different difficulties) again.

Not to mention the fact that even though the mode is called solo, it is still an online game.

Just need to balance out the security systems and make sure it all works with police response, number of interdictions and pirates etc.
Patience people, patience.
We don't need sliders, unless it's got beef, cheese and bacon on it.

Or if it's John-Rhys Davies with a remote control.

Yeah, I've never been comfortable with the idea that my solo play affect the open play, it seems some foresight was needed before they took the route to keep them joined.

...or give us back engineered NPC's, original 2.1 AI and temporarly make the FSD interdiction mini-game ridiculously easy, and write the name + rank of the interdicting NPC in the comms. If you can't handle deadly-to-elite, opt out of the challenge. Obviously very few have learned how to or prepared themselves for retreat via SC or high-wake.

I don't want to lose half the fun of ED just because the lowest common denominator is illiterate or expects "elite" to mean nothing next to the size of their "ship".

The crux seems to be if one is casual, one should be able to make the AI casual. Which is funny because the reverse, allowing the AI to be more of a challenge is a bridge too far. I'm going to be interested to see if the same "i want to play it my way, so AI has to be a floppy noodle" will be brought up again when Frontier make the mistake of adding alien race(s).

I'm fully expecting the AI to be a bit more of a turnip in future; because deadly and elite AI cannot threaten player 'lives'. This is the message that's been made quite clear. Frontier of course will try to make the community happy, so I can't actually blame them for responding as they have.

It's a shame, because the AI in Beta 6 wasn't actually as strong as it was when released to live; had it been more in tune with that last experience, without the daft rapid-fire bug, I wonder how differently it would have been received. I suspect it still would have created the same response, regardless.

Frontier consciously chose to offer every player an evolving galaxy to play in - regardless of game mode - over three and a half years ago.

Then player get used to the easy FSD game, still don't learn anything and complain if it ever gets put back to normal.

Better, turn the galaxy into a murder hobo hole for a week so everyone runs scared and then tune it down to normal so everyone will rejoice how manageable everything is.
Oh, wait.. that sounds familiar. :D
