How do you do a Liberate Gems mission

I see a mission called Liberate 3 Gems, and it talks about using hatch breakers and gives a time period, but I don't understand the process. How do you do these?

Piracy mission. Gonna need Hatch Breaker Limpets and Cargo Scanner. Collector Limpet and Interdictor also very helpful. Was there a specific target and system? If not have to use Gal Map to find a system that exports what you after. Interdict your target or wait for them to drop into normal space. Take down their shields and use the Hatch Breakers to rip out their cargo. Scoop it up.

When I took one yesterday (I'm technically still on it, more on that later) it went like this:

- Liberate 4 Precious Gems from target: dude called Artemus. It hinted that I should use hatch breakers and an FSD interdictor. You might also want to bring a cargo scanner.
- The mission will tell you that you need to scan the nav beacon at your destination.
- I went to the target system and honked my discovery scanner (you can also scan the nav beacon) and got a mission message in my inbox. The message told me that my target is near one of the planets so I set course for that planet.
- Once I got very close to the planet in question a blue mission specific signal source appeared.
- I dropped into the signal source and found my target there. Dude called Artemus in a T9. I scanned his cargo hold with my cargo scanner and he had the 4 Precious Gems in amongst limpets.
- I got his shields down and launched hatch breakers. Unfortunately he had point defence so I had to shoot his cargo hatch instead.

Here's where the mission got weird however. After I damaged his cargo hatch he started dropping all of his cargo EXCEPT the 4 Precious Gems. A police patrol arrived and because he was wanted they attacked him and blew him up. Still no Precious Gems dropped in the wreckage. I got a mission message saying, my target had been blown up and that if I do not have the gems then the mission is a bust.

Thing is the mission did not automatically fail. It has a timer of 5 days and apparently that means I can try again? I will test this out today. It continues to say that my target will appear from 18:00 until 18:30 in the same target system so I'm assuming I can try again for 4 more days.

How about this.

I took on a hostage rescue mission.

Found the target, made him drop the hostages.
Was suppose to rescue 8 of them.
Came in too fast towards the last one and made it go boom.
Only saved 7.
Unable to complete the mission.

"What!?!? You only saved 7 out of 8 hostages!!! Forget it then!!!"

We should be able to complte some missions partially. ;):D

Have to agree tinman. The reward should split down really.

This gems thing is interesting though. I'd take missions like that but if the target is clean and police turn up there's no way I could collect the cargo and fight those guys off (as well as the cargo ship) at the same time. Not without having a beastly powerful ship. My courier probably wouldn't cut it :)

If the target is wanted then I think if you have turned off "report crimes against me" then the police won't turn up and you can carry on.

Oof, ouch. Yeah, we really need some tweaks done to these types of missions. In my case I could have brought back slighty scorched, no longer precious, but still pretty-ish, kind of gems :D

Edit: You could buy a slave and turn them in as the 8th hostage - just tell the slave to keep their trap shut :p

I'm not sure on this but if the mission says to "liberate" an item it should mean the target is the guy who stole it thus he'll always be the criminal/wanted. Otherwise the mission cargo would read as "4 Precious Gems (Stolen)" like the missions in 2.0 where it told the player the cargo would need to be stolen in brackets.

Then again in 2.0 I encountered 'clean' hostage takers so....

Yes, turning report crimes off would have kept the coppers away. Hopefully I get another shot without having to fail the mission (it's worth 2mil! :()

Yep. I understand these kind of missions can be hard to implement correctly, but for now they're too subject to other events making them to fail whatever you do. Mine was to rescue 6 hostages... I managed the hostage taker to drop 2 of them, then cops came in and killed him (with the 4 remaining hostages, of course) because he was wanted. Well well well... what a wonderful world [noob] Besides, I cannot do anything with these 2 hostages and I have no choice but cancelling the mission. And my 2 hostages are now stolen canisters. Talk about completely illogical series of events... not to mention the fact that human people cannot be decently handled the same way as commodities. The only thing that makes a difference is slaves which are illegal in most places, though it's just an "illegal commodity" mechanically speaking. Too easy, FD, too easy ;)

Previously, I had the same kind of mission, I failed to free any hostage and blowed up the NPC. Oops... but the cops came and killed me! (though the NPC was wanted in the first place). Ok, in some way, that was deserved. Still, something's weird.

Seriously FD, these missions need to be seriously reviewed [wacko] That kind of behavior kills the immersion quite a bit. I like those kind of missions, but in their current state, I don't want to bother with these, really.

I'll check back later to see what you find out. Thanks :)
Okay, I tried for two days and it turns out that the target does not respawn even though the mission doesn't automatically fail upon his destruction and had a timer of 5 days. So if the target gets destroyed before dropping the mission specific cargo I'm afraid the mission is a bust and cannot be completed.

Sucks that the target didn't drop the precious gems when I shot out his cargo hatch and the coppers destroyed him. The only thing left to test out is if jumping to SC and back again to the signal source resets your target's health - for occassions when he's about to be destroyed by interferring cops or simply not dropping the goods for some reason.
