Engineers Safe way to transfer upgrade modules

I've just lost a level 3 modified FSD. I was at Shinrata and I did this:

1. Had two Pythons, the one I was in had a modified 5A FSD, the other a non-modified 5A FSD.
2. I sold the modified one
3. Switched ships
4. Tried to buy the modified one, but found that the outfitting screen thought I already had a 5A FSD and wouldn't let me buy the modified one.
5. I sold the other 5A FSD
6. Still couldn't buy back the modified one.
7. Switched ships back
8. Couldn't get the modified one for my first ship either.

So:

1. Is this a bug?
2. Could I have perhaps avoided the problem if I hadn't had a 5A in both ships to begin with, perhaps I should have started out with a 3A in the other ship or something.. Anyway don't do what I did, fortunately I now have the right stuff for 4 & 5 upgrades so I'm not too fussed..

If the instance reloads between switching for some reason you always lose it.

Just don't risk it and plan to avoid this.

This sounds like just the sort of bug I expected but I really can't think of any solution :/ everytime I swap I deliberately make sure i don't have the same class on every item because i was paranoid about it :( Unhappy to find my paranoia is a reality.

But glad it hasn't cost you too much, I nearly lost a thermal vent beam from a crash the other day its just piling things on the we need module storage pyre :p

No way to avoid it really, I wanted to get the level 4 upgrade on the battle Python I was in but I didn't want to throw away my level 3 upgrade when it could still be useful in my trade python. I've done it before with power play weapons and that works generally. I always go into solo to do it mind you..

I'll try it again next time and I'll make sure I don't start off with the same class of module in both ships to begin with.. Hopefully that should make it work. Still think it's a bit of a bug though as you say.

as it stands the outfitter only remembers a single module of a class/rating at a time.. so when you sold the 2nd, same class fsd, tha is the 1 it remembered. had you changed that normal fsd to a different class, or dropped it to a different rating, before selling the modded 1 from the other ship, would have been ok.oh, and i believe there is a time limit on it too 10mins i seem to recall from somewhere. (just a guess, but possibly tied into the station refresh itself for missions/market etc)

Yes, I think you're right. However, it shouldn't really think of modified things as the same as normal things, I might raise it.

yeah definitely worth bringing it up, would be nice to think it was a simple fix, but i can nderstand if it is alittle more complex than it looks on the surface.. either way hopefully the gear storage will happen sooner rather than later, and make this whole situation a mute point :)

If it's of any consolation, they said that module storage is very high on their priority list now, just did't make it for 2.1.
I guess that we'll see it in 2.2.

Can you link or quote the source please?

I want it! And, yes, I want it now :)

File a ticket. It would serve 2 purposes. 1) You might get the drive back and 2) it would push towards creating safe ways to transfer modules.

I was under the impression that you had to keep the upgraded modules on the ship you did the upgrade with. And if you sold that module then the upgrade was lost.

Is this wrong, and if so, could some one point to a source which states otherwise?

Thanks

You can move them the same way you move all equipment - sell module > shipyard > change ship > browse previously sold > equip, if the instance changes you'll lose it however.

That is very good to know.

Much Thanks Commander!

Just to be sure, you did use the 'rebuy sold module' button in the outfitting interface instead of browsing into the available FSD module selection at the station?

This is an "immersion" feature and is working as intended. You can't expect to sell something useful to the market and then just buy it back. Another pilot has your upgraded part and is laughing his hi-wake off ;)
