Elite Dangerous 2.4... ships fighters?

Hello,
Walking around ship? Ok. Don't know why, but might add to the immersion. Probably walk to your SRV or fighter bay.
Walking around your ship in dock would be cool for awhile but then the novelty would wear off. Walking around planet surface would also be cool for explorers who like to take those awesome shots. Maybe even walk into a cave or something.
But CoD in space? No. I personally would not want that. SC already has it and it's one of the reasons why I prefer ED. ED to me is ship focused and everything "important" that you do revolves around your ship. Even for surface missions. It's your ship that gets you there and brings you back. Your SRV helps you get, to and from, the final mile. I really hope that ED keeps this focus and doesn't loose it like SC seems to have (if it ever did.)

As for 2.4, my greatest wish is to have an explorer's expansion. New POIs to explore, new exploration data to recover and sell for miners, traders and combat pilots to use. Asteroids pummeling planets. Broken planets. Dense nebula clouds to fly through. Planets with mysterious signal sources to detect.

Have fun, fly safe. o7

I think either Monk or Retrograde has it right. Either EVA or expanded passengers.

I don't think so. Passengers are supposed to be in with 2.2, Guardians, and EVA / legs isn't supposed to happen until S3 (or later). They might tweak the passenger mechanic in both 2.3 and 2.4 but it won't be the focus of the update, unless they completely push it back from 2.2.

Maybe for certain missions you have to meet some geezer in a bar or skulking in a warehouse or something, imagine the tiny parps that your nether regions would make having to meet some shady dealer in a disused cargo bay to collect some loot to deliver or drop off a shadow delivery of some kind (not slaves of course) not knowing whether you will get paid or get more than you bargained for from him and his goons! For those missions it would work really well.
This sounds like those bits Mass Effect put in the way of the story

Chukchi naive guys :)
Walking on the ship, landing on a planet with an atmosphere - it is at least the second and third seasons and for some big money. This season has nothing outstanding will not, imho

And so what if you do? People are entitled to call their shops what they like. People who own their own maritjme pleasure craft can call their boats whatever they like so what's the issue? There is no way that such a way of thinking should prevent people who would like to name their ship from doing so. I would love it personally as it would give the ships a more personal connection to their owner.

I think you should be able to name your ship. It's not like anyone else needs to see it, but it adds so much to the feeling of it mattering.

Shipnaming is needed.
And if you think you'll see anime names and my little pony everywhere, take a look at the demographic of this game.

I like the new image on the store btw. Faces look very sweet.

I hope that 2.4 will follow the analogy of 1.5 (Ships) and it'll be called Stations! We need more variety in space!!

Re Walking around, I thought we'd been firmly told that it wasn't coming this season. Maybe I'm getting confused with fully atmospheric and/or earthlike planet landings, but TBH I though all those had been ruled out (while volcanic planets had been ruled in).

I'd agree with others - walking will be really difficult to do properly. Not from a graphics or level design POV (though not underestimating the scale of those tasks), but from a gameplay mechanics point of view.

just spit balling...

Must EVA to perform hull repair

Irregular cargo that cannot be scooped

Facilitate fuel transfer when limpits are not available

Some cool screenshots

More face to face interaction with NPCs at stations. Visit bar or employment office for missions or crew.

And, most importantly, platforming mini-game ;)

No No No. X rebirth did this and it was utter trash. You longed for the return of the computer interface to buy stuff. Walking around and meeting people on stations should be for other reasons entirely. Not sure what but not the bread and butter of the gameplay.

For those missions it would work really well. In fact I'd like the black market to have this too as it always seems weird to me that I can access illegal dealings through a public computer interface. Anything that's standard though is best done through the commodities board or outfitting screen. Fast, legal and you are on your way. The illegal stuff would of course have to pay more or else some of the more credit minded types would complain that the smuggling and such doesn't pay enough per hour due to having to walk around and actually interact with the universe.

X Rebirth should be required research for the Devs! It was in my view the very worst example of trying to do too much with too little dev time, and even then getting the priorities wrong. The FPS aspects when first released were woeful - very poor graphics, fairly dull and small level design and superficial and repetitive interactions with NPCs. The worst aspect for me was that this just replaced how you used to do things in the previous X games, all of which therefore took much longer than players were used to, with no benefits in terms of gameplay or enjoyment in return. I seem to remember that the early patches had to put in alternatives to allow players to by-pass the FPS aspect entirely if they wanted to, which many did.

.

I recently picked up Adr1ft for playing on my oculus rift and before FD implement EVA, I think this game should be required playing for all the devs.

it works perfectly and would be a fantastic fit. It "feels" believable, and from my selfish point of view works superbly in VR.

Too many games which do zeroG do it fast paced and imo not only does it not work well, it feels unbelievable.

imo movement in zeroG should be clunky, but clunky only works if it is all slow paced... too fast and it is just irritating imo.

I think it should at least appear in the target panel, below the ship type, e.g.

Cobra MK III
VFP Lovely Little Thrills

But fancy stuff like the name being actually painted on the hull is not needed in my opinion.

That's a really nice looking game - I couldn't agree more. So very different from the FPS stuff that's usually suggested

its certainly not essential, but (non coder ignorance warning) I do not see why it would be hard to implement each ship having a spot where their ID tag goes, and this would be the name, or if you do not give it one, a ships registration.

the last couple of games had it.

imo it would be a mistake to go down the standard FPS road.... the market is swamped with FPSers, lets be honest, with all the will in the world, Elite FPS DLC is not going to rival actual FPS games where that is the sole "thing". it is nice to imagine it being as good as games like halflife/farcry/doom but imo it just wont happen....

EVA is actually done (well) so rarely, infact Adr1ft is the only title i can think of which manages it....... Far better for elite to have its own flavour/identity and uniqueness and let Star Citizen go for the FPS pew pew game imo.

Walking will not be coming in 2.something. My personal view taken from previous comments and that of logical progression is that it will be 3.0 onwards.

The Engineers, 2.1

Scheduled for Spring 2016. Everything changes. Introducing an expanded mission system and game-changing loot. Craft exotic weapons and modules for your spacecraft and build a ship unlike any other.

The Guardians, 2.2

Scheduled for Summer 2016. Take what comes and strike back with double. Bring a second ship to every combat encounter with Ship-Launched Fighters and defend your passengers against the deadliest threats in the galaxy.

The Commanders, 2.3

Scheduled for Fall 2016. Team up and stand together. Forge your own identity with the new Commander Creator, then share your bridge with Multi-Crew and fly with friends.

2.4 ?????

Is it just me or are they building up space combat for whatever 2.4 will bring? All three updates lead to significantly enhanced combat ships. Modified weapons and modules, automated second ships and multi-crew. Because let's face, what situation are you most likely going to want to play as a crew member? In combat.

Yes, they've said for a long time that spacelegs would be season 3 and unless they've had a big change of plan that's unlikely to have changed. I'd guess 3.0 will be ship based with combat/boarding and then possibly rolling out space stations and walking on planets as it progresses. I'd perhaps also expect to see in season 3 atmospheric landings on barren planets. But that's just personal guess work

If Brabens "Winter is coming" statement about Thargoids wasn't hint enough.

2.4 which was intended to be quarter 4 of 2016 aka winter, is going to be Thargoids or some other Alien race.

Of course, there is the issue of the Delay... and how that will affect the other releases including season 3.
David was pretty vague in the livestream, we still don't know how long 2.2 has been delayed or if it even has been delayed at all.
