Does anyone bother with Mirrored or Reactive armour instead of Military?

I've found mirrored to be an excellent choice, depending on the opponent... but of course you can't plan for who you'll be facing.

I sometimes run mirrored on the small ships as you're [generally] more likely to be hit with hitscan weapons such as lasers.

If the price of mirrored / reactive would be on par with the military, I may consider them.
After all, they are not better, they just offer some tradeoff.

And you might regret it if you encounter my frag cannons someday ;)

I use reactive. It dramatically reduces damage from collisions (being rammed and such), explosives and cannons. As for the lasers, there are the shields.

Or class 4 multi cannons lol.

On to the OP.

Nope I have tried each and find that as a whole military armor is the most useful most of the time. Especially now that you can increase damage reduction via HRPs and mods.

I actually did :-D I had a 1v1 with you a while back (before I worked out how to keep my distance from FASes in my FDL) and your frags tore me to pieces. It was only later I realized I'd forgotten to change out the mirrored armour! Still, you'd have won anyway, but perhaps not now, I've got much better at dealing with those tactics :-D

I run reactive armor on my bounty hunter Viper IV. Nice against the increase in Kinetics I have been seeing on NPCs and does a decent job of keeping me safe. I plan to try out Mirrored on it eventually. Military is just a ok increase in all around resistance, making it worth the credits I suppose, but if you want to really mitigate thermal OR kinetic, gotta specialize.

Hey hey indeed, I remember you! :)
Yep, that was brutal and, should you have hit boost + FA off + 180° turn + reverse at full speed (then, rinse/repeat), I would not have been able to do much against you...there is not much you can do against that actually.

Yes, I have since learned against Mr McFragface who also favors your load-out. What's interesting though is that your build is still viable in 2.1 wheras the old rail-de-lance isn't..

Indeed, and I intend to mod my power plant and thrusters to low emission. This way I should finally be able to boost after my FAoff reverse opponents without cooking my ship, and hopefully nail a deadly blow of frag cannons at close range. :)

Needless to say, taking into account the RNGneer grind, I am not there yet... :-/

I imagine double shot is going to be on your list too... Even the low levels of that are quite nasty. I've been using 3 double shot gimballed frags on my 600 m/s Courier.. Very hard to counter something that can approach you at that speed and then drop that many pellets.

I run reflective/mirror on everything. Point defense on the rear. In my FAS with a need to run away from a fight the point defense will stop the missiles. The reflective neuters the lasers. Multicannons are less effective once I boost far enough away that their range is limited. When the police arrive they will mostly use lasers, so I am able to completely ignore them for 25% longer than with military grade and 50% longer with reactive.

Nobody in my wing likes the setup though. It still works for survivability.
