So.. I decided to go out and help CMDRs...

With all the raging about AI going on these forums, I decided to go out to Eravate, and keep tabs on the newbies apparently getting creamed by the AI.

First problem I came across, was no one was getting creamed.
Except me. Well, sort of. Not really. I got interdicted half a dozen times by a stupid Deadly FASs, that mostly just flew around performing aerobatics, then exploding.
Half the time the security showed up and joined in. So Bravo there FD, cops now have a use other than shooting your face off for 200cr bounties. Lol

Second problem is, out of about 25 CMDRs. I got a reply from 1.
And he was still on his first mission and had no idea what was going on. Helped him hand in his first mission....
Then he logged out.

So.... that wasted my morning.

Back to Guild Wars 2. Lol

My question, why does no one talk?

I get that sometimes(most of the time), people just miss the messages, because the chat system is crap. They either don't receive it, or don't see it. Easily done.
But why do other people play in open, only to ignore every communication they receive?
It's just odd. And ruins my hopes of actually interacting with players.

On a totally unrelated note. Ice Ring combat is rather fun. Well, it's identical to normal ring combat, only white. But atleast it's a change from the metallic rocks, or just rocks.
AI still isn't hard though. Took on Deadly and Elite ships I'd normally take on in 2.0. only with Less SCBs and a Collector limpet. And a huge beam laser. :D

The chat system is very poor, it's one of the areas I was hoping they would improve. It takes long enough to write something without having to sort out how it works each time.

Well, at least you tried and you did help 1 person. I won't speculate as why people run silent.

As for GW2 all I can say is ... STORMBLUFF ISLEs FTW!

I am doing this for more than a year, now. And I can confirm that 4% are about right. :)

Most of the new commanders don't even know you've sent them a message. They have their hands, legs, appendages, tentacles full of piloting the ship (read "trying not to crash all the time"). And some of those who do see your message simply don't know how to reply, are in VR, or aren't interested in talking whatsoever.

The rest is usually thankful, in my experience. It is a good effort. Keep it up.

that's not it. Chat isn't that bad. When someone sends you a direct message, you just hit Enter, type in the message and hit Enter again. It really doesn't get easier than this. :p

If you try to communicate with a noob, keep in mind he is a noob and might have no idea how to open the comm panel...or even worse, he might even not have noticed your message.

Best way to help is to patrol the system, then drop on commander low wakes and assist (or not) from there.

FWIW, if you're playing w/ KB+Mouse you lose all flight control if you've got the chat window open. If you're in a hurry to get places it's usually more useful to just get on with flying from place to place (especially if it's a short flight in SC) than to bother with the hilariously clunky chat controls.

I have no idea what that is. Lol

I'm still roaming the starting area... I'm level 21 now though.

I get that newbies might not see the message, or know how to reply.
Most use local chat, and to be honest, the chat system does some odd things.
It's very primitive. I'd rather have a tab for each person I'm talking too. Even if it's limited to say, 5. Rather than just have a whole mess of messages, including AI spam. And have to select each CMDR i want to talk to from the friend/local list each time.

IMHO, Local chat should be system wide.

Then wing(if available), then your own private chat tab. And you should be able to invite people to your chat tab, so you can have larger group discussions.

Plus 2 spare chat tabs so you can join 2 other private chat groups if invited from other people.

One time, I sat in newbie space with my Golden Asp trying to hand out free gold. No one took it.

You probably shouldn't ha e begun with the line "want a sweetie?".

I was told as a kid to never trust a bloke in a gold ship giving away free stuff. It made no sense in the seventies but now I see his point.

No way a newbie watches his comms.

You need a very experienced space sim player with a relaxed attitude and an "it's loaned, no worries if I get killed doing something wrong" approach to look at his comms... once every hour.

Only way to talk to newbies is to interdict them. By doing so, you

a) get a fine

b) will see the fastest newbies in this game running away from you whilst panicking completely

c) will be shot at

d) will be cursed at

e) will be attacked

f) will be rammed to death by the dreaded newbiewinder

g) will * off Newbie protectors by interdicting smaller vessels so make sure you tell them in advance that you're not interdicting for a kill. Take one of them with you to proof if asked for. There's too many idiots around starter space (although at the moment most of them seem to be engineering mighty ganker weapons)

h) will be seen as a weirdo

Btw: The new AI is newbie friendly as far as I can say. Not more complaints than ever. Mostly from newbies who DID NOT DO the tutorials (big no no).

PS: It's quite helpful to say PEACE and I AM HUMAN and I AM NOT A PIRATE and HAVE NO FEAR and WHY DO YOU RUN AWAY and HELLLLLOOOOOOO???????? for a start. Don't pursue them, they'll run even faster. There's no brain in space in the first hours...

PPS: Spent about 500 million on newbies since release. If you want some info about dropout rates and newbies' frustration levels... ask me. Btw: I have told them for weeks the new mission system will not be flawed and will be new and great. Just lost my face.

Very true.

I tried it once. Never seen the little sidey move so fast.
Lol

They still didn't talk. Probably didn't even check what was chasing them.
To be honest, I wouldn't either. I'd just be thinking "run away!"... lol

Lol, most of it is fear of PvP. I noticed several commanders last night, by the time I had said Hi, they had high tailed it out of the system, and I am the least scariest person in the galaxy.

Kudos for trying, but given the grief that one bored PvP player can dish out to every noob within a starter system I suspect many fear you are merely setting up for ganking. Someone on EDC said they were using in-game voice comms to talk to another CMDR but overheard him talking to friends on TS to get the welcome squad ready. As well as the comms system sometimes not working it's also quite easy to miss messages when you're struggling to control your ship anyway.

IMHO the "new starters are getting creamed" thing isn't really happening, it's conjecture by longer-playing CMDRs who hold more rank than skill protesting for the AI to be lobotomised again. AI is actually supposed to be slightly easier for new starters, but with a steeper gradient later on; the noobs I've chatted to all seem to be coping ok, their natural cautiousness is paying dividends.

try hanging on eravate nav beacon, or outside ackerman market and others, heck try hanging outside that trevithick dock, also flash some lights to gain attention, possibly even outside the mail slot lol.

This^^^^
As a serial restarter (Ironman) I can say that the AI for a new start hasn't changed in any appreciable way. They are still stupid even without the bugged manoeuvres.
They are NOT meeting the killer NPCs that over-ranked longtime players are. If they need help then it's the same help as before.
As to comms, perhaps sending some instructions how to answer would help. I know it was one of the last things I bothered to think about.
