So.. I decided to go out and help CMDRs...

I did the same and with similar results. I did find one chap who responded so I gave him some stuff but he got bored trying (and mostly failing) to scoop it up. I think he got 2 or 3 tons. I haven't bothered since then.

I flew around Eravate with 400,000cr worth of rares to hand out to people.

No one took it.
No one even replied.

I sold it for myself in the end.

That awkward moment when the people who are actually beginners (as apposed to the collective speaking on their behalf) are seeing something the collective isn't; namely that the AI is the least of their issues.

Based on a few friends whom have started recently? AI basically doesn't come up. It's "how do I mine?" "Is the eagle good?" "Wut is <insert module> and what does it do?" "I think I might be stuck, I forgot a fuel scoop".. "How do I pick stuff up?" (followed by) "wut? where is the cargo scoop? bro pls" - and so on.

The learning curve on the basics is steep, it's far more of a hurdle than shieldless, harmless AI.

With all the raging about AI going on these forums, I decided to go out to Eravate, and keep tabs on the newbies apparently getting creamed by the AI.

First problem I came across, was no one was getting creamed.
Except me. Well, sort of. Not really. I got interdicted half a dozen times by a stupid Deadly FASs, that mostly just flew around performing aerobatics, then exploding.
Half the time the security showed up and joined in. So Bravo there FD, cops now have a use other than shooting your face off for 200cr bounties. Lol

Second problem is, out of about 25 CMDRs. I got a reply from 1.
And he was still on his first mission and had no idea what was going on. Helped him hand in his first mission....
Then he logged out.

So.... that wasted my morning.

My question, why does no one talk?

I get that sometimes(most of the time), people just miss the messages, because the chat system is crap. They either don't receive it, or don't see it. Easily done.
But why do other people play in open, only to ignore every communication they receive?
It's just odd. And ruins my hopes of actually interacting with players.

On a totally unrelated note. Ice Ring combat is rather fun. Well, it's identical to normal ring combat, only white. But atleast it's a change from the metallic rocks, or just rocks.
AI still isn't hard though. Took on Deadly and Elite ships I'd normally take on in 2.0. only with Less SCBs and a Collector limpet. And a huge beam laser. :D

go back - i dont reply to most "hi!"s i get because i dont feel like dissapointing them 5 minutes later with a "yeah i was joking with that whole friends thing, now give me cargo or die"
:p

elite is the best mmolike anyway.

I used to have to tell trade folk to press the "2" when I was collecting their taxes but these days they seem communicative enough... mostly nice... sometimes rude... I had to blow some poor fellow up last night because he decided insulting me, then shooting was the best course of action.

He's dead now.

So if you end up receiving nasty threats or horrible insults the best way to communicate any point is with railguns and multicannons. :)

This^^^^
As a serial restarter (Ironman) I can say that the AI for a new start hasn't changed in any appreciable way. They are still stupid even without the bugged manoeuvres.
They are NOT meeting the killer NPCs that over-ranked longtime players are. If they need help then it's the same help as before.
As to comms, perhaps sending some instructions how to answer would help. I know it was one of the last things I bothered to think about.

As a serial "Clear Saver" I can also agree, I'm currently in a Type 6 and I can still escape the NPC's that are sent against me with little effort, Ive died about 5 times - and I can honestly say the most dangerous CMDR in this Galaxy is still me
.
I have been beaten by an NPC twice, Once when I got all of a fluster when a viper interdicted and pulled me out whn I tried to fight it in my unshielded hauler and once when I tried to dismiss my ship on a planet and the npc continued to attack it
.
As for why aren't people talking its probably when you say "im here to help all you newbies - do you know how to fly?" to the (many) commander who like me clear save or like Wyaston Hypatia play ironman.
.

We know what we are doing so don't reply

Rep for trying to be the "nice guy". Very commendable...

Some good answers so far, let me add this: Just try and remember when you first started, and how you had no idea even where all the control buttons were or even knew how to use them correctly, if you did.

Myself, I remember that the "2" button just locked me out of other controls and sometimes caused a crash.

Took me a week in game to figure out how to reply to a message.

Usually when someone tries to chat on comms to me, i'm already spooling up the FSD!!

Sometimes I get my reply in, in time, other times, I'm not so quick..

Lol, most of it is fear of PvP. I noticed several commanders last night, by the time I had said Hi, they had high tailed it out of the system, and I am the least scariest person in the galaxy.

And how are they supposed to know that ? ;)

the first days i was busy learning controls and setting them, learning the chat was the least of my worries, that's about the last thing i learned i think, lol
So some newbies might not respond because they just don't know how :p
I didn't even know how to tell human from NPC (I was too lazy to read the manual (if there is such a thing))

Why do people walk down the street and not say hi to everyone? Why do people sit on the bus quietly minding their own business? Why do people stand in elevators without saying a word? Why do people read magazines in waiting rooms instead of chatting with people around them? Why do people turn the <political/religious group of choice here> away when they offer to lend a helping hand with something or want to talk?
-
I think because they are people, they have things to do, things that are going on. Maybe they are also chatting with their friends through steam or Skype, maybe they have one eye on Elite and the other on Netflix or youtube, maybe they are just enjoying some tunes while they do their thing. Maybe they don't want to take their hands off their hotas or gamepad to type a message. Maybe they are just bad at typing. Maybe they are just getting a grip on the game and don't really want someone trying to help to come in and muddy the waters for them. Maybe they are just people and they behave in Elite like they do in real life, they mind their own business and do their own thing. It's completely normal and expected in every other facet of life (stores, sidewalks, movies, elevators, waiting rooms, jobs, parks, yards, pools, bars, restaurants, etc) why wouldn't it be in Elite?
-
Improve the chat all you want, if you want assured interaction then FD need to put a "nod casually" keybind in, because that's all people are really interested in doing, because they're people.

There is a deep paranoia and lack of trust in ED and with good reason....
however, I replied to a guy on this forum who said he was struggling to get to grips with the game at early doors. We winged up and had some fab fun. Now we're mates.
In-game is a distrustful place though and you can't blame em..[big grin]

The last time I said Hi to a fellow AD faction he started shooting at me in a FAS, I was in my FDL but not equipped to take him on. It's difficult to know who to trust.

Too many loopholes for people to use against other CMDR's and get away with it, now with the insane AI's it is not very relaxing anymore, it's hi risk and depressing if you get killed in a big ship.
I have switched to Project Cars, just won my first race against 20 other players, that was fun.
