Engineers Amateurs

Irony on

Hey Frontier, where did you find these chaps that call themselves engineer? You know, I come from germany. Everything has to be nice and regulated. In our country, folks like your "engineers" would get no permission to put their hands on anything technical. Not only that they are not able to keep vital crafting materials in stock. No, they are not even able to predict the outcome of their fiddeling with technics.

Okay, okay, okay. I saw this multicannon guy who seems to be a bit more organized. His tier 2 fiddeling is guaranteed to be better than his tier 1 stuff. But this Felicity lady might have had too much exploring in her life. Her tier 5 "upgrade" :D :D :D can be worse that her tier 3 stuff. I bet in a few days her base will be bombarded by complaints of her customers. Too bad that you can not ask for money back warranty.

And you local dealers seem to have had too much skooma. Yesterday one said to me:"hey, can you bring this 4 tons of grain to the other station. I pay you 34.223 Cr and a lump of iron." I asked him if iron is the new word for an extra strong drug. Maybe I need the lump of iron the throw it into his face :D

Irony off

I really like many aspects of the update. I don´t like the unpredictability of the work the engineers do. At least a tier 2 update should be guaranteed to be better than the tier 1 update. It would be ideal if any update in the same tier is guaraanteed to be better than the one thats already installed. It would be okay for me if the engineer says:"I can guarantee that my update of your tier 5 FSD will be better than the update I did yesterday, but it might be only a tiny bit - and it might be heavier."

If that would be the case, I wouldn´t mind the hours of driving in my SRV to find that piece of Polonium. But right now it is killing my motivation.

You really did a good job at the graphics (from my pov). I really like the missions. I really love the game. I can live with the NPC´s. I can live with the fact that I cannot use my Python or my Anaconda anymore without risking to loose it. I am a bit in trouble with the fact that I can only get these damn Mechanical Components by hunting down innocent T7´s and T9´s.

I know that the game is far from beeing finished. So please consider to tweak it here an there :)

Best regards

I don't agree with this. Having the possibility of overlap is one of the good features of the RNG. If FD cap the tier 1 upgrade so that the tier 2 upgrade will always be better it reduces how good the tier 1 upgrade can be (given that the tier 5 upgrade is constant).

This would be fine with me, jgm. But then I want to have a realistic chance that my second or third attempt of an tier 5 upgrade will be better than what I have.

But atm I had 3 attempts that were worse than my tier 3 upgrade ...

If you have a stellar tier 3 upgrade then perhaps you should be happy with that rather than unhappy that the average tier 5 upgrades aren't giving you anything better?

For example I had a great roll on my tier 4 FSD upgrade. I'm not going to bother with tier 5; yes there's a chance of a better roll but I have a great upgrade as it is. I don't think it unreasonable to accept this type of situation and the overlap it creates.

Whats this then?

STAHL TECH, means steel techniques, German based company having manufacturing unit of quality surgical, dental and beauty instruments in Pakistan,

He's right though.
Spending hours for getting materials just to have a diceroll decide if all your effort was for nothing is not exactly what I'd advertise as crafting.

That is what KILLED all of it for me too!

I somewhat enjoy driving around in the SRV, but once I saw how the whole Engineer thing worked, and how unpredictable the upgrades were, I was like.... HUH? I just spent an entire session collecting all this crap, and its used up in a couple of seconds, and I don't even end up with a viable upgrade?

If FD is going to stick with this system, then they need to allow you to roll the dice over and over again using the same material "FEE" until you get a roll that actually provides you with some benefit for all those hours of treasure hunting!

As it stands right now, it is much too much grindy work for no promises of anything worthwhile on the other side of the grind.

Spot on!

I took my 'Conda for a FSD range lvl 4 upgrade & got a 33.3% increase in range. I then got the mats for the lvl 5 upgrade but this time I took my Asp & got 30.9% increase.

Yes I expected a higher upgrade after the first one was quite good, but looking at it from an Explorers point of view, both my Exploration ships have a better range increase by more than 30%.....cool!

+1 for skooma references. I could have engineered a better weapon, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

I don't mind the randomness in the sense that you get benefits, within a range. This is common, for example, when taking your car/bike to a tuner. He will guarantee X% increase, but you may get more.

I don't like the tier X could be worse than tier X-1 aspect. It would be ok, if I hadn't spent hours finding quasi rare or rare stuff for the tier X.

I also don't like the tiny chance for sfx, but I understand where they were coming from, and they are fixing that (trade rep for specified sfx).

It's not called Engineers because it's supposed to be definitively based on engineering, in exactly the same way that it's not called Dangerous because it's supposed to be definitively based on danger.

I've been wondering why the entire RNG component wasn't simply presented in the form of "Loot™" - where rather than a gaggle of space trash to sift through, and then playing Roulette, you could be doing mission/taking out enemy/scanning some kind of POI target/etc that would have resulted in a blueprint/schematic that engineer could craft for you. On the point of engineer progression, why not simply work for the @#$ned engineer? Do missions, earn favors, cash in favors for improving your gear/crafting said blueprint.

Over-design seems a recurring problem, and I truly hope that the continued critical feedback here can offer hope to break that cycle.

As I've said before, "Shade tree Mechanics" would have been much more descriptive. I should think any one that knows what an engineer is would understand that it's a euphamism in this context. Engineers design equipment for new manufacture, mechanics service the stuff after it's been manufactured. The RNG stuff may not be sexy, but it's the only way to effectively simulate the random nature of the effects of "tinkering" with things. You might argue that it's over done, but I don't know any other way of doing things unless anyone is up for random engine falures and the like. I'm certainly willing to entertain a real solution, that doesn't entirely break the real intention of this update in favor of making this game just like some other video game, and I bet FDev is too.

While some of the supply hunting can be frustrating, I'm still largely happy with "The Engineers".

P.S. There's a lot of Elder Scrolls fans around here ain't there :p

May the divines be with you. I am largely happy with the engineers too. But I am an engineer myself. My boss would have fired me if I worked like them :D

Today I found my first mission with one Mechanical Component as reward. A very interesting surface salvage mission. I guess they slowly rework server sided reward lists :D
