So I have been pondering, why, for planetary mining, do we need to use some puny rover to just peck at the surface deposits of a planet. I mean really we have ships, some people have REALLY BIG ships...why bother with the rover for mining?
As a thought I put forward this, a module that can be placed into a cargo slot much like the rover bay. It contains a vertical mining tool that can be used to mine scanned deposits on a planet that are under the ship your piloting.
Step 1: You need to do a surface scan of the planet while in FSD mode. This will tell you the planet's major resources.
Step 2: If the lifeless rock has what you want, descend to the planet's surface. Much like the rovers scanner, the surface scanner will scan under the ship mapping out ore densities. The developers could use a heat map for this, so black or dark blue would mean not much at all to red meaning a mineral deposit. Remember Planets are big...so...it could take some searching.
Step 3: Land the ship where you want to mine and turn on the mining rig.
Over time the mining rig will break down the deposit and pull it into your ship. But there is a catch, this is not AFK mining. You need to pay attention as you can come under attack by skimmers, ships, and anything else the developers can come up with. On top of that they could offer some sort of management "game" where to get good yields, you need to manage the operation. Power draw, heat levels, angle, and more could all come to play when mining a deposit on a planet.
To be clear I got this while just roaming around on a planet. It is boring, somewhat tedious, and I would like a more interesting method then just zipping around in a buggy blasting rocks. There really needs to be a bit more depth in the game in general. So here is my thought...enjoy and please be positive. Thank you.
