Horizons [Mining]: Why use a little puny rover to mine? We have ships!!

So I have been pondering, why, for planetary mining, do we need to use some puny rover to just peck at the surface deposits of a planet. I mean really we have ships, some people have REALLY BIG ships...why bother with the rover for mining?

As a thought I put forward this, a module that can be placed into a cargo slot much like the rover bay. It contains a vertical mining tool that can be used to mine scanned deposits on a planet that are under the ship your piloting.

Step 1: You need to do a surface scan of the planet while in FSD mode. This will tell you the planet's major resources.
Step 2: If the lifeless rock has what you want, descend to the planet's surface. Much like the rovers scanner, the surface scanner will scan under the ship mapping out ore densities. The developers could use a heat map for this, so black or dark blue would mean not much at all to red meaning a mineral deposit. Remember Planets are big...so...it could take some searching.
Step 3: Land the ship where you want to mine and turn on the mining rig.

Over time the mining rig will break down the deposit and pull it into your ship. But there is a catch, this is not AFK mining. You need to pay attention as you can come under attack by skimmers, ships, and anything else the developers can come up with. On top of that they could offer some sort of management "game" where to get good yields, you need to manage the operation. Power draw, heat levels, angle, and more could all come to play when mining a deposit on a planet.

To be clear I got this while just roaming around on a planet. It is boring, somewhat tedious, and I would like a more interesting method then just zipping around in a buggy blasting rocks. There really needs to be a bit more depth in the game in general. So here is my thought...enjoy and please be positive. Thank you.

Yea, well, it's not a bad idea and I hope something like that will find its way into the game.
But to answer to your general question - Why SRVs? - is kind of easy. We need to have something to do with them on the surface. :D

To me it just sounds like Frontier is being lazy again, and is trying to gate content so that it will last longer.

I do not think it is being lazy. More that they have an idea and they follow through even though it does not lead to something that is fun in the short term. I mean yes, SRV's ar fun..zoom zoom and all they. They are the Honda's of ED, and to me they feel like a solution without a problem. "Ok, well...planets...umm people want planets...so...what can we do. Hurm...places to dock? May be...but that is a lot of things. Let the player get out and roam? No...not in this time frame. I KNOW...Let's give them a buggy to scoot around on the surface with...that should amuse them for a year." :|

Now I do like planets with colonies and really I would love to see some ability of the player to build (or order) say an outpost so we can do more with these lifeless rocks. But for now I would just be happy to have a better way to get the materials/minerals needed to play the RNG game from the engineers.

Using the SRV on a surface to gather materials here is not exactly mining.

Most of your finds are just small meteorites. That's prospecting and taking samples.
A little rover is perfect for that job.

No need for planets at all to get Engineer mats. Just go mining in a belt or ring. Or are there specific mats that are only available on planets?

But planetary mining is not in-game yet, we don't know how it's going to pan out nor have any hints for it. What you are currently doing with the rover is scavenging, not mining.

Although the latest patch did add some commodities that it will be exclusive to it as a teaser, so at least we know it has the potential to be lucrative.

All 3 -ites have "planetary mining" as their source. If anyone wants to see them themselves, land on a tourist/service station.

The Issue is even then, it is nonsensical. There is no way to say, scan an area...see it is high in...sulphur for instance, then land, blast outcroppings, and get...sulphur. It is all chance with no skill involved and I really think there should be at least some skill be it in Prospecting or Mining.

Yes, we all want the detailed surface scanner to be the prospector limpet for SRV excursions.

But for now all you can do is remember locations - because it is not entirely random, but determined by their generator. In other words planets will have different drop tables and chances.
Once you know a location with a high Arsenic output for example you can always just return there when you need more (bookmarks!).

That's the exploration skill for now.

We need atomic bombs we can drop to add crater -sized holes in the ground, then land and search for all sorts of stuff

Gathering materials on planets is very entertaining for me. It's something I can just sit there and do for hours. Its like mining in Minecraft for me, it never really gets boring.
