Security useless - just saying

Just reporting in in case any of you other pilots are under the misapprehension that the cops will help. Cruising around a surface, looked into a POI, got jumped on by a FDS. Can't hope to beat that in my little DBE so thought I would try a test - I can afford it. Pips in sys, twist and turn, cops arrive. 2 of them - a viper and a python, demanding that everybody cease and desist. Nice, I thought, they should attend to this FDS. No such luck. They literally stood off and watched as I was destroyed. They didn't fire a single shot!

That is totally pathetic! This was in Shinrarta Dezra by the way - on A1 I think it was. Lawful, Fed aligned, me allied - and the cops watched as their ally was destroyed. What is the point of them? What is the point of a high security system? Or even being allied? Bah!

You say that but they helped Erich in his mining ship when he was interdicted by three elite commanders in FDLs..

I've actually found the cops to be really useful when I've been in my trade ship.

At the risk of sounding like I defend anything FD does: My experience has been that the cops show up incredibly quickly with guns blazing in high security systems.

It could be a bug in the instance you describe, but this has been across the board for me. Cops have been life savers more than once since 2.1.

So far this evening I have been pulled out of SC about half a dozen times, of those the majority the cops rolled in and scanned the AI (as well as me) and then engaged. So I was able to fight off attackers with a brief security team at my side.

Do you have report crimes on?

Well why didn't they help me? Now I am feeling personally affronted. Yes I have report crimes on - I guess that is why they turned up in the first case. Perhaps we were too fast for them - maybe I should have led the FDS to them but in the heat of the moment I didn't think of that. Might set it up again and try that.

I've noticed 90% of the time they will jump in and kick butt, I've resorted to turning off report crimes because the cops are so efficient. On the flip side i have noticed lower ranks will sometimes arrive on scene, scan everybody, then mill about for a bit. Am pretty sure it's because the devs dumbed down the lower rank NPC's, including the low rank cops. Anything at Master rank or below seems to be brain dead.

Personally I feel that any Military or Authority ship should be Dangerous or Elite rank by standard.

I have seen both happening cops with guns blazing and being totally ignored despite being allied/not wanted.
Bug maybe, yeh i reckon so.
Best to ticket it.

Not sure why they didn't help you, my experience so far has always been that they helped me. Only thing I could imagine is maybe the enemy ships weren't wanted and you had "report crimes against me" off, or its powerplay related where you in there territory and they don't get wanted for shooting you. (edit: forget that, just remembered that no power can control Shinrartra)

Or of course, and thats entirley possible, a bug. Had once a npc that I did fight and he did not want to shoot me, I even just stood still there for a moment while he was facing me and still doing nothing. While that weren't cops the cops could of course have the same bug there.

This is probable a bug, so report it.

Planetary combat is fairly new, introduced in 2.1. It did happen very occasionally before, but now it's intended.

Police response since 2.1 is on the whole, vastly improved so your title comes across like a whining complaint and sweeping generalisation. Police response in space is great now, varied depending on the security of the system you are in. Greatly needed now too since the AI buff.

So police response in atmosphere (at least, planet orbit and below) probably hasn't been tested or fed back much. I'm sure once they are aware frontier will fix this.

Or as others have said, if report crimes against me is off, you're on your own!

I've also had them, generally, jump in and refuse to engage until they had completed scanning everyone. I can stay alive pretty handily if I'm in over my head in the Courier, especially if I haul ass away from the enemy. What I cannot do is sit there and soak fire for the 10+ seconds it usually takes the Police to mosey over and scan me. If they're just gonna mill about and not shoot, then they're in the way.

Yep. I've actually grown frustrated with their help. I dusted off my vulture last night and was randomly cruising around and the feds kept helping when I didn't want them to.

I've seen the same brain dead effect to. I suspect confirmation bias but whenever I really need help they sent Barney Fife, when I'm fine they send John McClane.

I've had help from the cops on several occasions (in fact in the middle of writing this), however when they first arrive they don't know what's been happening, only that someone's committed a crime on someone else, so they scan you and scan the other ships then attack the wanted ones. They do seem to take there own sweet time over getting round to attacking though ;)

I've seen them turn up to a fight in deep space, scan me, then disappear without bothering to scan the pirate NPC attacking me. This seems to be a part of the larger problem with AI behaviour (as opposed to combat skills) that was introduced or became more obvious to spot since 2.1.

They've always been useless, Hell, the RL polis up here are better/faster/less useless (and that's saying something!!!). ;)

EDIT: What would help is a distress call button... But that only makes too much sense. :(

OP, when security comes, fly towards them so they can scan quicker the targets. They need to be in scanner range or they will stall sometimes.

I also switched off report crimes.

EDIT: Report crimes is off because I don't want the Security to respond.

Have seen the same behavior and it's hit or miss. I can't determine a pattern. I usually fly an Asp for trading/missions. Back to back I had encounters where I got interdicted and the minigame glitched out where I had all blue in the tunnel but at the last second the vector shot off axis and my FSD crapped out. As I was boosting away the first time, three system authority jumped into the system and I ran my attacker toward them. They engaged my attacker and I got away.

The second time went pretty much the same as the first, except the cops stayed in formation (there were three of them) and flew in a straight line. In spite of transmitting something along the lines of "We're responding to report of a crime," they did nothing while my attacker blew the crap out me as I flew right threw them. I think they finally woke up when the bad guy accidentally shot them, but by then I was spiraling out in my escape capsule.

Security response is a great mechanic and would really help balance out the AI situation by preserving challenging opponents but allowing players more interested in trade or mining the option of staying in safer areas for extra protection. Like other good mechanics in the game, FD just needs to make them work properly...
