Missing Salvage Items

I took a salvage mission to collect 4x Experimental Chemicals around Epsilon Eridani, but when I arrived at the mission specific spot, there was only 3 valid canisters plus a bunch of other junk. I checked every one and there was no way I missed it. I scooped what I could, but I can't hand in the ones I have. Is there any chance more will spawn if I return (+1 day left on the mission) or am I going to have to abandon and take the rep hit? This feels like a bug, but thought I'd ask first.

You'd think they'd be grateful for anything I brought back, especially since the mission was worth 333k. Wouldn't it make more sense if you were just asked to salvage anything valuable from a wreckage and you were rewarded accordingly.

It would be cool to get a percentage of the commission based on how much of the total you returned with. I recently boosted into the debris cloud and killed one of four canisters. Oops. I could have returned three, right?

Iv found that if you are short on the spawns, you can usually exit the instance, and fly about until another mission signal source pops up. I did this a few times, both for space and surface missions.

the ones i don't like are when a big gang of pirates come and take one of your cans... for thus purpose i have a cobra salvage ship with limpets so i can snag them all

I tried a relog/revisit but still no cigar. I abandoned the mission in the end and took only a small rep hit. I'll just avoid that sort of mission for now and hope for a more sensible approach to "salvage" missions in future.
