Engineers So... what you're telling me...

I made that exact jouney- in my FDL, just like what you're dreading.

I scanned every single thing on the way to and fro, and sold the scans to Farseer. Now she ruvs me.

Sometimes it's the journey as much as the destination, my friend.

No sir, you are incorrect. I HAVE an FdL so that I don't have to fly around taking pictures. That is exactly why I have an FdL outfitted the way that I do. I do not want to take that journey. I would rather set myself on fire. And what the crap does flying with the worse jump range and fuel tank in the game to each star taking pictures have to do with a thruster upgrade? Top speed is a combat thing. It has nothing to do with exploration. Nothing at all. The only time you're in normal space when exploring is when you're AFK taking a dump.

I'm a little late to jumping on the engineering train.

I'm looking into thruster upgrades, and what you're telling me is that I have to refit my FDL with cargo racks, haul my Fer De Lance out to Maia to buy a unique commodity, then haul my FDL (with full cargo) back to the bubble so I can roll the dice to see if I actually get a thruster upgrade? And if not, I have to go do it again?

.....

Have you ever tried to fly an FdL 400ly before? Let alone turn around and do it again laden with cargo? Are you insane? Do you think I'm insane?

Someone please call me stupid and tell me there's something else I can do to avoid that absolute ridiculousness.

FDL and ASP both use class 5 thrusters. Buy an ASP, go grab the engineer modifications with it, and fly back to your FDL. Move the thrusters from the ASP to the FDL. Done

Late to this one.
Just wanted to say that I made the trip from Maia 3 times for it to stick: Got interdicted and killed once, then got killed checking a USS just outside the Marduk Landing site.
Both times, lost the Soontill relics.

However, I did get my Cobra's FSD upgraded to lev 3 in the end.

I have not tried it yet, so test it with something easy to mod first before doing the big plunge.

I can confirm it works, after asking same question myself and being told it does. But haven't tested the session time - which was reported to me as ~10min - as the duration between selling and re-buying, even if you stay at same station.

Obviously, no one wants to test pushing how close to this session timer, if it exists, before you are SOL. So basically an ASAP sell-switch ship-rebuy is recommended, with the knock on wood hope that your connection doesn't close, power out, or whatever interruption in between.

So the intended purpose for this 2.1 update is

1. Soul devouring seeking rare and precious materials.
2. Doing the Ship Shuffle Loadout trying to get the right ship the right place with the right stuff,
3. The Las Vegas option on your outcome when doing "Engineering"
4. It was so fun I will do it all once again. And again. ect.

I think this is indeed new and provoking game design. It shows FD to be cutting edge in developing new was to manage games, with thoughtfull ang deeply satisfying options for game play. The accomplishments will surely make other game developers follow suit and let Elite Engineers stand as a paragon of 2016 game mechanics and development. The reception so far has been wide and far accolades.

Cheers Cmdr's

(ps. I have a game rig for sale, slightly, very slightly used. PM)

some sarcasm off/

One more thing about transferring modules - do it in solo. It has by far lower connection quality requirements, and if i remember correctly you have to be in the same instance for byback to work, so if instance switches for some reason you loose your module, which cannot happen in solo.
Did it a lot of times, even before 2.1 with powerplay rewards, and it works...

You'd be crazy to do it that way. Keep your FDL/Corvette close to Deciat (and make sure you put a bit of cargo space in them for when you want to swap ships!) and go around in a multi-purpose ship (like a Python/Anaconda). When you want to upgrade something in your FDL/Corvette just jump into that ship (your cargo will transfer) and then you can pop to whichever engineer. You can even take another ship to the engineer which takes the same size module and never have your FDL leave port.

OR.......you could buy a cargo rack for the FdL and park it close to Deciat, preferable a High Tech sys. Buy a Hauler, fit it for max. jump range, pop out to Maia buy the Alloy and jump back. Just an idea. ;)

I bought a Diamondback Scout for that job. It has a great range and the small amount of cargo space needed for the task, is much faster and much better armed than a Hauler. Obviously cost a lot more though, but worth it. Still sold it after I'd used it, however. Can't be doing with too many ships.

:)

You can transfer cargo between ships as long said ships in storage have at least enough cargo racks to accommodate those goods. So in the case of the FdL, make sure you add a small cargo rack in it before putting it in storage.

I'd never use an FdL for a long distance trip or any sort of long term mission running. Equip a Cobra or T6 with top thrusters and FSD before heading to Maia instead. Or better yet, an Asp if you have one. In fact, I see no reason why someone should not have an Asp available to them at all times for long distance mission running.

Or.....

Park FDL near engineer. Take Asp - get Meta-Alloy, fly Asp to engineer and unlock the engineer. Go back and get FDL and take to unlocked engineer.

Just curious: How many hours did this take you, would you guess?

It doesn't take that long, and evening or two.. Maybe a while if you just did that upgrade in isolation but you don't do that you got for many at once and see what materials you find.

Pardon?

Park FDL near engineer.
Oh wait you've got to find a station that sells the asp.
Hunt for station...half hour later....found it.
Oh wait I don't have enough credits to pay for the asp.
Grind credits for an Asp...a couple of hours later.....Ok got enough for the asp now.
Oh wait, I've got to outfit the ship to make that jump less of a chore.
Grind credits for the upgrades.....A couple of hours later.....Ok got enough money for the upgrades now.
Upgrade, plot the route and we're off!

Fly to the engineer, turn in alloy.
Fly back to the station where you stored the FDL.
Sell the Asp's modules to make the money back.
Sell the Asp.
Fly back to the Engineer.
They now require me to go grinding for mats????

Add in all the times things don't go as smoothly as that and you get interdicted 20 times flying to a station and maybe you'll come to realize what a massive PITA it is just for that one unlock.

It all depends where you're up to in the game.. A really large number of players already had an Asp w/fuelscoop at the end of 2.0 (*cough* Robigo) so if you already have one it's just a quick 14 jump out to get the meta-alloys..

Or you could use the right ship for the right job.

I'm willing to bet that "A really large number of players already had an Asp" is significantly less than the vast amount of people that do not. I've had an Asp but I traded that in ages ago.
Even less will be people that have an asp conveniently parked near the Engineer so even those with Asps stored somewhere will have to make a number of jumps to go get it.
Even so 14 jumps is not quick by any stretch of the imagination although it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't mind numbingly boring to travel anywhere.

I was willing to give the Engineers a go and see if they revitalized a game I haven't really had fun with since the Premium/Standard Beta days but no, it's just not fun and a chore just like a lot of things in this game. It's a shame as it doesn't NEED to be like this.

The station comms are nice though.

Ok ! just wing up and ignore it, in wing you are impervious to this craf!
Stuff upgrades and bla, bla its worthless.
Wing up and you will kill everything, just as before. Because the AI is maybe more precise but it is basically still stupid.
Cheers
